2018 venting thread

I don’t think it reflects poorly because they can’t know the error is on your part depending on the message they receive. Does it say that the link doesn’t exist, or error?

However, they might have not wanted to give it another chance and could have brushed it off. I’d say you can call someone while setting it back up. Is that something you can do, or is it deleted if not renewed?

I'm trying to renew it now but it will take a while. I'm going to email the programs today and be like "heyyyyyy... please check out these other things I did...."

An updated vent: my domain has been restored (woo!) but Wordpress has deleted all. of. my. fucking. content. from the past four years. I do not have back ups of most of them. So. I don't even fucking know!

Were you using WordPress or wordpress.com?

WordPress via Bluehost, but I initially bought the .com domain from WordPress. I can see all of the titles of my old pages and posts when in WordPress, but can't access, edit, or view anything. Just contacted tech support again.

That's really odd. You'd think that the domain needing to be renewed wouldn't impact your content. I just launched a WordPress website yesterday and when I uploaded it on the host, the domain dame wasn't even pointing to that host until a few days later when we were ready to launch...

They renewed the domain and restored an old .wordpress.com blog I used literally 4 years ago. So I think that they just... got rid of the actual site?

That is really strange. If all else fails... https://www.waybackmachinedownloader.com/en/how-to-download-site-from-wayback-machine/#wordpress_installation_instruction

Maybe this could help? If you site was archived on the Wayback Machine.

Oooh, I don't think it was, but thank you for the idea!

this isn't a vent, but i need some advice!

i've been interviewing for full time job where i'm currently at. i passed the first two rounds and am now set for a final, formal interview with the ceo (whom i know personally, as i used to intern for the company). i *think?* she knows i'm applying to grad school, but it hasn't come up with the other interviewers and i haven't offered that information. i'm supposed to meet with her on friday and have asked if next friday would be okay instead, thinking that i'll hopefully have some answers by then. but what do i do if i have this interview and am not sure if i'm going to grad school in the fall? i really love this company and don't want to take the job if i'm only going to be able to work there for a few months; they have very few employees and need people who will be there longterm.

but then how do i bring it up? i don't want to deceive anyone. from an even more basic standpoint, how do i respond to: "where do you see yourself in five years?"

eek! i'm worried.

ALSO: the ceo follows me on IG / twitter, where i've been talking about apps, but i'm not sure that she's seen it? ugh.

This was just one of those days where I'm pretty sure an acceptance wouldn't have even cheered me up. :( The worst part was, it wasn't even that a ton of bad things happened (just one and more towards the end), it was just one of those days were you feel sad and restless for no particular reason. Ugh.

I’m sorry you feel that way. Could it be because you don’t know what’s going to happen as long as you don’t have an answer?

Unfortunately, I know that's not it. I've struggled with seemingly random bouts of depression in the past, so I think that's just it in addition to some non-grad school home life stressors going on right now.

I have those too, but I know now that they’re hormonal. It gets pretty severe, and I’m in the process of seeing a specialist. If you think it could be your case, you can pm me! Assuming you’re a female haha.

In any case, be kind with yourself in these moments. You’re okay! Well it’s okay not to be okay, I mean!

If they don't ask, you don't need to tell (see what I did there).

In all seriousness though, they don't need to know and you don't have an obligation to disclose it unless it is brought up. As for the 5 years question, you can vaguely discuss continuing your education (due to a desire to constantly seek improvement in your field)  in a way that doesn't necessarily say "I'll be at a full-time PhD program where I'm studying [insert x thing not at all related to the job in question]." You wouldn't be lying; you really do see yourself continuing your education due to a desire to better qualified/knowledgeable for your chosen field. They just don't know that your chosen field is academia. Which connects back to my early statement: if they don't ask, you don't need to tell.

that's true, yeah. i guess that i don't want to take the job if i'm going to leave in six months. i'd rather stay at my current PT job...

I totally agree with this.

A couple of years ago when I was applying to MA programs, I made the mistake of telling my boss that I was planning on going to graduate school. Later when they were hiring for a manager position (which I was very qualified for), my boss kept talking about promoting me. She'd practically promised me the position, I started taking on extra manager duties, and then she decided to pass me over for the job because I might be leaving in 9 months. She ended up hiring someone else who quit before I even moved away for my MA. I fully believe that if I hadn't said anything, I would have gotten the promotion. I'm lucky I did get into a program, but if I hadn't I would have screwed myself over.

I wouldn't say anything unless they ask or you're ready to leave.

Hmm, okay. I'll likely keep it to myself. What if they *do* ask?

If they do ask, I think an employer would be impressed by what you've said here—that you care about the company and understand it may not be in their best interest to train you for a position you can't keep in the long term, but the acceptance rates in this field are extremely slim and the position is a perfect fit for you, you're excited to move forward in the company, etc.
