MrBP22
Hi @koppanyj22! My career goal is to work in the intelligence or defense community. A dream job of mine is to work for the CIA or FBI so that is what I am working towards currently. Which is why I really like the International Security program, I feel like it would benefit me greatly in getting there. What are your career goals? I did well on the writing part of the GRE (4.5), average verbal (156), and very low quant (147). I'm not a math person, as you can tell. But I had a high undergrad GPA and did well in the few math classes I took during undergrad, so I am hoping they won't be too harsh on me because of my GRE. How did you do on your GRE? Did you apply to any other programs? Edited February 8, 2018 by MrBP22
koppanyj22
Hey @MrBP22, I'm right now thinking about using the degree to work as an analyst for either the State Department or a federal agency. However, I also want to go into an academia eventually. I thought I did alright on the GRE. I'm more of a math person and so I got Q: 155, V: 150, and W: 4.5. In undergrad I got a 3.6 GPA but I currently have a 4.0 in my MA program. I have lots of experience working with development, but since I am switching from development work to security studies, I will be curious to see how they weigh everything. Megabyte
Also applied for the International Security program in Fall. Did anyone interview for the Sie Fellowship?
rose09
Career goals include working for the UN/State Dept. and hopefully becoming a diplomat. Best of luck to everyone who applied
koppanyj22
@Megabyte have they already started interviews for the Sie Fellowship? I was inquiring about that in the fall and they did not give me much information about what they were looking for or the process.
Megabyte
@koppanyj22 Yeah, I guess they started last Wednesday? I interviewed last Friday.

Megabyte
@koppanyj22 My undergrad GPA was 3.9. GRE Q: 153, V: 162, and W: 5.0. @ShewantsthePhD101 How's Denver to live in? I've visited Colorado (Montrose, Telluride) and I've always loved when I've gone, but never spent much time in Denver. How expensive are apartments? ShewantsthePhD101
I'm a Master's student in the Religious Studies department. Denver is hella expensive. All of it. Like, you're talking studios starting at $750. Rent. Groceries. All of it is gonna cost you an arm and a leg. If you can handle having a roommate, I sincerely suggest you get one, or two or three. Most people I know have several roommates. Or they live outside of the city and commute in.
MrBP22
I'm also from Colorado (and did my undergrad at CU). Apartments are expensive and @ShewantsthePhD101 is spot on. Roommates would def help but don't knock living outside of Denver. Rent prices can go way down if you live outside of the city.

It can't be as bad as LA where I'm at, can it?

ShewantsthePhD101
It entirely depends on the part of town. If you're downtown, it's totally fine. But if you're further out, it can be problematic. The lightrail (train) is great, but there are parts of town (like mine) where it doesn't go. And the bus system is very hit or miss. BNichole
Hey everyone! I’ve been accepted to the International Studies program. I also interviewed for the Sie fellowship.. @Megabyte have you heard anything back/know when they’ll tell us something?
Megabyte
Public transportation sounds promising - haven’t driven for two years on account of the public transport being so good where I am, and I’d love to keep relying on it if possible in Denver. @BrittOrange Nice! I was going to send a follow-up email soon, but I hadn’t heard anything specifically regarding when we’d find out. I’m assuming beginning of March. How’d your interview go? Felt really positive initially, but now of course I’m second guessing everything haha. Edited February 13, 2018 by Megabyte
BNichole
I’ve seen a few people mention how expensive Denver is.. and it’s all relative I guess. I live in Boston and it’s $550-750 for a ROOM in an apartment with 3-4 other people. I’m excited at the prospect of only paying $750 for a studio lol. @Megabyte I also thought it went well.. but then did the same as you and second guessed everything lol. I know they said it would be short but I didn’t expect it to be that short.
