ElmaElma
I'm looking for suggestions/recommendations for clinical psych PhD programs that have a particular emphasis on cultural competency and diversity in clinical training and practice? This could mean programs that have those elements built in, or simply departments that house experts in these areas. It could also mean universities that have other relevant departments/centers that could be resources in this area (e.g., critical/social psychology programs, anthropology, ethnic studies, Native American studies, etc.) Schools in the northeast U.S. are a plus! xxxxxxxxxx
Your focus/interests are very broad. All programs are generally (by APA mandated standards) supposed to address cultural competency/diversity. Do you mean programs who focus on marginalized groups? Increasing evidence-based practices to such populations? You need to narrow this a bit. I'd recommend for you to look at the research literature focusing on these areas (or any other areas you think of) and then narrow down the experts/authors and institutions who are working on these topics you are interested in. Use psycINFO, pubmed, etc. That's how you'll be able to easily pin point who's leading this work/who you'd like to work with in your graduate education. letsgetclinicalclinical
The vast majority, if not all, of counseling psych PhD programs emphasize multicultural issues and cultural competency. Of the clinical psych PhD programs that have a focus on research that serve ethnic minority populations, I’d look at UCLA, Arizona State University, George Washington University, Catholic University, UNC at Chapel Hill, CUNY, & Loyola University Chicago. Loyola has such a strong focus on diversity, they have specific web pages on faculty that have interests serving marginalized populations. I hope this helps! I would definitely consider Counseling Psych programs that are APA accredited (same career path as clinical, just a different preface on the degree name). Counseling programs tend to be a little more holistic when it comes to mental health - looking at all aspects that impact mental health like career, cultural/racial marginalization, etc., whereas clinical programs put significantly less, if any (depending upon the program), emphasis on those areas. letsgetclinicalclinical
Fi19
I would suggest using the Insider’s Guide to Clinical and Counseling Psychology, which is available on Amazon. The book categorizes programs by research/program focus. I primarily used it in my application process to find programs and PIs, and it’s been a huge help. letsgetclinicalclinical
