from my understanding, Hunter barely gives out any financial aid $ for free, if any. They typically just offer you loans only

I have a question, I was offered admission, but still have not received my financial aid package and I was only given a week to confirm. I am also still waiting on a few other schools and I feel like week is way to little time to weigh all my options.  Is there anyway I can ask for an extension? Has anyone been successful in this? Any tips on how to word it?

From what I have seen on other forums, Hunter rarely gives out $ for free, if any. They just offer work study or unsubsidized direct loans.  Has anyone been given any $ directly from Hunter other than a loan?

Are we sure Hunter even gives out rejection notices? I've now been waiting almost 5 weeks past interview and my status still says 'pending interview'. I've checked with admissions twice and both times I've been told "you'll hear by the end of the week'. Starting to feel like I'm getting ghosted. LOL

They sure kept me on my toes waiting- but I just received my acceptance letter :) Looking forward to meeting you all soon.

So when exactly is the first day of the semester?

Also, for those of you that are coming from out of state, how have you completed the field placement form without an address?

Thank you!

I'm a full time two year student and my first day is Thursday, 8/27. I believe we all have field placement on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and class on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The normal first day of school for CUNY students is Wednesday, 8/26 but given that we have field placement on Wednesdays, our first day of class should be 8/27. (At least that's what's shown in my calendar on CUNYfirst). If you have already registered for classes, you can look at your class schedule using calendar view.

Hi all,

any students from the OYR track that have been able to register for classes? I received my acceptance letter last week and a follow up email with additional steps regarding registering. My cunyfirst portal is showing up with another school and not hunters, and i have not been able to access my hunter email. I emailed the help desk but have not received any response?

Any suggestions that any of you may have?

Also looking forward to meeting everyone.

Congrats again! :) Did you attend another CUNY previously? If so, that could explain why CUNYfirst it showing that other school and not Hunter. Also, if you attended another CUNY previously, your EMPL ID remains the same. I went to Hunter for undergrad and it took CUNYfirst a little over two weeks to reflect that I am now a graduate student. It also took two weeks from being accepted for Hunter College's ICIT department to reach out to me regarding how to access my Hunter email. So you might just have to wait.

Regarding registering for classes, did anyone reach out to your personally to provide any guidance or advising as to which classes we should enroll in? I would like to enroll before all the classes fill up, but I feel so lost here. Only this week I got access to my CUNYfirst and Hunter email. Just wondering if I should sit tight for a little while longer or reach out to one of the advisors for help.

Oh no, no one reached out to me personally. I just took it upon myself to register for classes using the pathway for designated method (Clinical Practice with Individuals, Families and Groups).

I went to Hunter for undergrad and I never had an advisor reach out to me prior to registration to guide me so I think that's why I jumped right to registering myself when the opportunity was available, haha.

https://sssw.hunter.cuny.edu/programs/msw/#squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-0. This is the link I used to determine which classes I need to register for.

I would advise registering for classes on your own for now so that at least you have something on your schedule. As far as I know, the only advisors that will be reaching to us are the ones for field placement.

Anyone deferring this year? Is there an option to defer? Don’t get me wrong, I am super excited to start this fall and have been working towards this for sometime. However, I am getting some push back from my family because of Covid and the fact that my wife and I are moving from CO to NY on such a late notice.
I fully plan to attend in the fall, just curious if any are in the same boat.

MMH0913, thank you for all your input. It’s nice to see you and so many others helping one another.

I tried doing some research to find out if deferring is an option but didn't see anything on the Silberman site specifically. However, I found this link on the Hunter College site: http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/graduateadmissions/faq/decisions-defrrals

This is what it said in regards to deferrals:

If I am admitted, may I defer my admission?

No. Hunter College does not grant deferrals of admission; you must reapply.

Thank you for the shoutout! I feel so honored and happy to be accepted into the program and I am definitely willing to help anyone who needs assistance in the matter! ?

I sent the field placement form on 5/6 and have yet to hear back. To my understanding, we simply have to wait for one of the assistant directors to reach out to us. I know the director of field education is resigning so that may slow things down even more.

Hi everyone. Congrats to those who have been accepted. I was curious to see if anyone applied for the oyr mental health scholarship program and what their status currently is. I recently had my interview and am now waiting for a decision. Thanks!

Hey all,

I applied back in February and finally heard back for an interview in early May and finally got accepted to the 2 FT program at the end of May. Was actually planning on quitting my current job (SW dept of a hospital) and doing FT program. But due to COVID and the letter from Director Okuda about arranging employment based field placements, I have been re-considering.

Anyone else in the same boat? I have been trying to call/email Hunter for more information and see what that would look like but they never respond. Anyone have any info?

Thanks and congrats to everyone!

Oh wow, I actually didn’t receive this letter. This is concerning to me because I was looking to quit my job for school too.

When did Dr. Okuda send out this letter?

I didn't receive the letter! It said the PDF was unavailable when I opened it. Are you able to DM it to me? Thanks!

"Congratulations once again on your acceptance to the Silberman School of Social Work! As we all know,
the COVID-19 pandemic has created an entirely unprecedented situation, including having an impact on
our field placement process. Because of this, for any of you working in social services, we would like to
explore the possibility of creating an employment-based field placement, to ensure both continuity and
learning in your first year at SSSW.
It is very important that you first submit your field practicum planning form provided by the Admissions
Office.
Once we receive the form, we will assign you to an Assistant Director who will assist you with your
placement process.
If you are in such a position providing social services, please reach out to your assigned Assistant
Director so we can explore this possibility as a field placement further.
Thank you in advance and, once again, welcome to Silberman!

Sincerely,
Kanako Okuda"

Not sure why you can't open it but here is the letter.

Hi.

It's been over 5 weeks since my interview now. Someone responded to my email 2 weeks ago saying he'd talk to the admissions committee to see if I can get and answer soon, but since then my emails and phone call has been met with radio silence. I know they're probably stressed, but fall semester is looming closer and I still have no idea what's going on. Anybody else have this issue......I'm not even sure what to do anymore.

I'm sorry to hear that. I had to wait a very long time after my interview for my acceptance (5 weeks). I will say, even those of us accepted and registered, we are all uncertain and in a holding pattern for the fall, as nobody has heard about field placements or if classes will take place remotely or in person. I am assuming all classes will continue remotely, esp. in light of CUNY's massive budget cuts.

Thanks for sharing this! For folks who received it, have you heard from/been assigned an Assistant Director? I have already resigned from my social services job in anticipation of going to school FT, so this is concerning to me. Wish I'd known!
