Bspeech
Has anyone applied to the UVM (U of Vermont) graduate SLP program for Fall of 2021? ASHA website makes it seem like the program isn’t as competitive... is this true? I am curious on how long it typically takes to hear back and if anyone has heard back already! Also what are your stats? To those that are currently attending, what are the pros and cons to this program. I have taken my pre-req's here, but they were all online. I am a native Vermonter so I would like to stay here. If I do not get accepted I am not sure what else to do. Is SUNY Plattsburgh competitive? Any online programs that allow you to take some leveling courses once you receive an acceptance? jomyers.online
jomyers.online
From the UVM website: The department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Vermont is actively working to be inclusive and implement fair and equitable treatment during the graduate application process. We are aware that bias and other forms of unfair treatment have historically put some students, especially students of color, at a disadvantage with regard to standardized testing (GRE) and grade point average (GPA). In response, we are committed to a holistic process of review to consider the entire profile of every applicant. Basically, it's not that the program isn't competitive, it's just that they have a holistic review process for applications. They'll put additional weight on letters of recommendation, personal statements, and your resume. Last year, they received 110 applications, admitted 72 students, and had 16 enroll. These are some strange stats. I'm assuming it's verified, so for SLP schools, that's a pretty good chance for an acceptance letter or at least a chance to get off the waitlist! (65% acceptance rate) The last few years, they've been sending admissions decisions between mid-February and late March. SUNY Plattsburgh: Out of 43 applications, they admitted 29 students, and 19 enrolled. (67% acceptance rate) From meandering around the forum, some schools will offer acceptance and allow you to complete levelling courses if you're out-of-major. Just make sure that the schools you're looking at accept out-of-major students, and email the program to make sure. bibliophile222
I graduated from UVM back in May and had an awesome grad experience! Pros: The professors were helpful, I learned a lot and felt prepared for the Praxis, there were some good research opportunities, the cohorts are small and the vibe was very chill and supportive, and student feedback is really important, so your chance of getting awful clinic/placement supervisors is a lot lower than it is at most schools because they ditch supervisors who get complaints. The only real cons are the price for out-of-state students and the fact that Vermont just doesn't have a ton of medical placements. Anyone who could go out of state for the summer was encouraged to so that the other students could get the VT placements. Be prepared to drive up to an hour (maybe more) for medical or even school placements. That being said, everyone who wanted a medical placement got one. As to the competitiveness, I think the main reason that it's lower is because it's in a small, rural state and people either don't have it on their radar or want to be in a bigger city. Oh, and cost almost certainly has something to do with it. Let me know if you have any other questions! I am not entirely sure when I should be hearing back and how I should hear a decision (mail, email, or phone call). smarieSLP2b

About half of my cohort was from Vermont, so I'm not sure how that affects decision making. I heard back on February 5th or 6th, but I believe the deadline was a month later this year, so decisions might have been pushed back as well. Good luck! dani_zee
Thank you! It was verified Jan 14th, I have no idea in what order they send out acceptances. My acceptance letter was actually dated Friday (2/26) so I'm assuming they only got to a few acceptance letters Friday and more will come Monday. I wouldn't worry too much, I think besides me only 2-3 others have posted their acceptances on the results section.

For some reason mine wasn’t verified until the 21st but I’m just patiently awaiting an answer. It’s my top choice so I am getting a little nervous. I was curious if they sent letter via email or mail but makes sense it is email indicating to check the portal. Was it the graduate application portal that they said to check? dani_zee
@Bspeech Yes it was the graduate application portal. Mine also still says "submitted", but now there is a new tab under "print receipt" that says "view your decision letter" Bspeech

Bspeech
I am sad to say that I am currently WAITLISTED... I am trying to remain hopeful and positive. However, it just doesn't seem like this is going to happen for me right now. Anyone else waitlisted at UVM? This is my only choice due to my current situation.
