Kwellington01 Posted January 4, 2022 Posted January 4, 2022 (edited) In my SOP should address the low gpa I had during my freshman and sophomore year if I have now significantly increased my GPA? The low GPA occurred because of switching majors and major health issues. Edited January 4, 2022 by Kwellington01 Added tags
FuturePhDPls Posted January 4, 2022 Posted January 4, 2022 I think it wouldn't hurt to mention it there, especially if there are no other areas in the application that let you address low grades/test scores. One of my grad school advisors really stressed addressing my low GRE quant score in my SOP. His exact words were "don't ignore it!!" because the admissions committee will likely wonder what the heck happened, even if you display a nice upward trajectory. I ended up recently interviewing for a doctoral program and the PI brought it up. She said she was really curious about that low score, despite my solid grades and quant experience. I think it doesn't hurt to discuss what happened, but really highlight your improvement since. Kwellington01 1
