I'm choosing between graduate schools. It's come down to prestige versus schedule flexibiliy. I'm married and have a part time job, plus I'll be commuting one hour each way. Which is more important?

Which is more important when deciding between two graduate schools...

A program with greater local recognition and larger department?

or

A program with greater schedule flexibility and unique curriculum?

....taking into consideration a two hour commute, part time job, and home/marriage/family.

Thanks for any advice

That seems like a future prospects vs. current comforts question. Which is more important to you? How long will it take you to earn this degree?

I'd probably sacrifice for a more prestigious school, thinking of my future professional prospects. But depending on how many years you'll be attending, you might understandably decide your schedule and personal interests are more important for you to succeed in the long-haul effort. Whatever makes you all-around most able to succeed is really most important.

Thanks for the advice.

The program is a three year masters, education specialist via psychology.

The more prestigious university has the largest psychology department in its state, is an easier commute, and well known locally for this specific program. However, it does not offer a Ph. D program, if so desired.

The flexible university is well known for it's education department, offers Ph. D program as well as masters, and allows half the work to be completed from home, meaning more days a week at home. However, the drive is unnerving and the town is substandard.

Who knew this decision would be so challenging!! I think my undergrad professors mentioned it but you don't realize until your faced with the life changing choice!

Thanks again for the time!

Also keep in mind that for most graduate degrees, it's not so much the prestige of the school that matters as the renowned and connections of the actual professor you will be working with.

Look at the two programs, see which professors interest you, and then look into their publication records, collaborations, past students, etc.

Personally, I lean towards a more laid back program, as long as you can find a professor with a good reputation and decent funding. Having a life outside of your PhD is important, and maintaining a marriage takes some time.

You'll do better work if you have something besides work going on.

I really think this is a decision that only you can make. I am a firm believer that you can attend a less prestigious school and still be successful in academia, however, you have to work hard to become a total rock-star. In reality, going with a big-name school will give you the weight of that name....so really, it depends on what fits your life best.
