Hi there, quick question:

I've taken the GRE more than once, and the most recent time had the best Verbal score (good, because I'm in English), but also had a TERRIBLE AW score, which is weird, because I got a great AW scre on my other test date.

In the section of online apps where you plug in your scores, can I put my best score for each section? They will get both on the official score report anyway, but I figure they're going to LOOK most at my actual app, and the difference is huge.

I am afraid not. On all my online apps they asked also for a date of the test. If you took GRE twice (let's call these two attempts A and B ) and you will plug in quant score from A and verbal + AW from B (for instance) then either you write the date when you took test A or the date you took the test B, in both cases you will be technically lying and confusing ad comms. Even if the online app does not ask for the date (and I am yet to encounter such app), I would assume they need scores from one test, not a combination from several tests. Just my opinion.

It really depends on the school. When I applied to USC three years ago for grad school, they took the best score out of each section, so I was able to take the best verbal score from test A and the best math score from test B.

But the programs I'm applying to (which are NOT USC) now require that I report my best score taken on the same day, so I wont' be able to do what I did for USC. They did encourage me to take the test a third time (which I did).

From the applications I've seen, I would say "no." If the application only lets you add one score, I would go with the most recent.

This definitely seems to vary because several schools I'm applying to only have one spot for a GRE score. I emailed them and they said I could indeed put the highest scores. Since they will be getting both of your scores I don't think its a big deal if you put your highest if there is only one slot. But of course, it varies.
