Just got word of my acceptance to University of Michigan! Hooray! Sounds like their selections are really tight. Got a call from one of the historians as well as an email from my person of interest, who said, "They History Department has decided to select you as one of the very few admittees into our Ph.D program." I wonder how many there are total?

Applied: Harvard (Hist and East Asian Lang), Berkeley (Hist), Ohio State (Hist), UMichigan (Hist), Hawaii (Hist), Pittsburgh (Hist)

Accepted: Harvard, Berkeley, UMichigan

Hi, Congrat! Which one do you prefer?

Hi, Congrat! Which one do you prefer?

No idea... for medieval Japanese history each of the schools I've been accepted to so far have very specific qualities that make them good choices. Berkeley and Michigan each have a top specialist (pretty much the only ones in the country) but Harvard's HEAL program does a greater focus on historical research through foreign languages (medieval history has a very intensive language demand for primary documents). All three have spectacular library resources and whatnot. :) So I'm going to fly out to all of them in March and see which department does the best job of woo'ing me and which city I like best, too. ;) It's going to be an intense decision making process come the end of March.

Just received word that I've been accepted to the University of Michigan!! Woohoo!! I missed the initial call from a professor, but then he followed up with an email. 5 years guaranteed funding with the first two years at $23,000!

Fantastic!!! Congratulations, iknownothing!!! That's really competitive funding, too. Way to go!

Congrats! :) No one gave me any numbers, but I'm hoping it's consistent across their offers. ;) What's your field?

Congrats to those who got into Michigan. Looks like it might be no dice for the rest of us. It was my top choice, but I believe that everything happens for a reason, so I'm not sweating it.

That's incredibly competitive funding too. Looks like you guys hit the jackpot!

Late 19th/Early 20th Century America with an emphasis on Gender. What's yours? Did they invite you out to campus in March?

Medieval Japanese (research on artisans and authority). Yes, they did invite me out and I'll be visiting. :) It's gonna be a tough decision for sure! Hope to see you there! Feel free to PM me.

I got notice in the mail that I was rejected from Michigan's American Culture program (they accepted only 8 out of 97 applicants). :( Plus I haven't heard anything from their history program, so I assume I'm out of that pool too. I am quite sad - these are the first rejections for a school I really wanted to go to.

It seems to me like they've been kind of slow to get out the notices, though. My notification came from individuals in the department, not an admissions coordinator or the like. So there may still be hope!

Considering this board is mostly Americanists and Europeanists, it's seems odd that there is only one acceptance from that category. I get the impression they make the decisions by field, so it's possible your field has not finalized their choices yet.

Gosh darn it, you're right! Deep breath. Also, they make decisions in waves. Waves. I'm okay now. :)

Yes, if it helps, the email and phone call I received was from the US caucus at Michigan. I also heard from my potential adviser today. Hang in there!!

Well, I got my first rejection today. Harvard, by mail. One of my recommenders told me he hadn't heard the best things about the professor with whom I would be working, but to have my first notification be a rejection is more than a little depressing.

Sorry to hear about the bad news. :( But may I ask what it was your heard about whom? I'm considering Harvard myself, so. I'm curious about other opinions of the professors there, especially in History. Feel free to PM me. Best of luck with your other apps!

Just checked my messages from my phone in the US. Had one from NYU on Friday with a positive tone and some nice key phrases "eager to talk with you," "feel free to call on the weekend," etc. Now I have to anxiously wait until tomorrow.

I'm out of the country and have been out of e-mail contact for about a week, so I had a (bit out of date) pleasant moment yesterday when I finally got e-mail back and found out I'd gotten into Johns Hopkins. Made the rejection from Stanford (a fate I seem to share with many of you on the results page) that I found out about at the same time feel a lot less bad.

Did everyone else's UPenn rejection say "I trust that you have been, or will soon be, admitted elsewhere to a university of your choice?" That seems like not the smartest thing to say in a form letter (in my case I do have one but still...)

YES! Mine too! A little presumptuous, UPenn...
