I'm thrilled! I had a few questions if anyone might be able to help? I had thought since I fell into the 25-36 month category I would be offered $40K for 24 months. Did anyone else just get the one year offer? Has anyone gone through the appeals process?  Is it really true that with the new budget the SSHRC Fellowship will go from $20K to 40K? I mean that's an insane increase! How are people not talking about this more?  I always heard CGS-D is more prestigious than the fellowship? Is this real in academia or an outdated idea?  Pure curiosity is the 24 month cut off to qualify for the CGS-D a new thing? I've heard of 3rd and 4th year PhD students in previous years getting the CGS-D so I was surprised I didn't qualify especially as I fast-tracked after my first year MSc to PhD. Also I can't say enough after two years of applying to CIHR it is so worth adapting your project to apply to SSHRC if possible. I'm shocked I scored so high and am kicking myself for not applying to SSHRC in previous years. If you're in this boat I would be happy to chat with you (someone should learn from my mistakes)! Thanks so much, and congratulations to all who applied. It's tough out there! I can only comment on your first question - but I also completed 28 months of my PhD when I applied (started September 2021) and received a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship for 24 months ($20,000 per year with the current budget - who knows if/when that will be increased with the new budget). It seems odd that you were only offered 1 year. I'd definitely get in touch with SSHRC/go through the appeals process.

I've submitted all the forms and waiting to hear from the Program Officer (I heard from the Program Assistant that everything was forwarded). Although, my instalment form was completed with a certificate of enrolment, rather than a signature on the form...maybe that will be an issue, we'll see if I have to resubmit...anyways! SSHRCMyResponsibilities
A couple of questions about the forms, particularly the Payee and Direct Deposit Enrolment Form. They ask for your reference number - what reference number? On the right hand side, they ask for a 'PRI' and a 'BN (CDN)' which I guess refers to Canadian bank number, i.e. the institution number? Â For those of you not in Canada, did you choose to convert your currency to another bank account? I'm wondering if the gov't takes care of all the conversion fees and everything that is usually associated with converting currency. pugluvz
folks with a September start date, are you waiting to upload your first instalment form? It says it can be received up to 6 weeks in advance, so I wasn't sure if that means don't upload it until 6 weeks before.

How I interpreted this form is that those requirements on the top right corner correlate to what else is on that line, i.e., 'Awardees' provide the 'Award 'Number; 'Employees' give the 'PRI' number (whatever that is); 'Committee Members' provide their 'SIN', and so on. So for us, just the award number is necessary. The banking information is in the separate box. Don't forgot to also include a voided cheque (I'm with RBC and they provide an easy to access PDF copy of one online). The gov't WON'T take care of the conversion fees because those are levied by the receiving bank. Anything you need to transfer over to foreign currency, I suggest via TransferWise (known as just 'Wise' now), very fast and low fees. They have accounts in many currencies, so when you transfer, they do it for you via their local accounts and therefore you won't incur any fees beyond their minimal ones. Gretta Conroy
Changing our start dates doesn't change anything except receiving our money later, right? I thought I was being all smart in deferring mine until January, in case the increased funding kicked in, but now I'm worried I'll lose out somehow... plz help my anxious brain! QuantumQuill
I finally accepted my doctoral award (for September)! As I am attending a Canadian institution, are there no documents I need to upload? The guide says:  For awards held outside of Canada and for all PDF awards, one of the following documents must be uploaded to the appropriate secure submission site : Canadian citizens must provide a copy of an official document indicating their citizenship (for example, birth certificate, citizenship card or passport). Permanent residents of Canada must provide a copy of an official document indicating their landing date in Canada (for example, IMM 1442, IMM 5292, IMM 1000 or permanent resident card); if the landing date was after the application deadline, NSERC or SSHRC will cancel the offer of award. Protected Persons, as defined under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada), must provide a copy of an official document verifying this status. I read this as I don't have to submit anything... is this correct?

ChatPhD
Been trying to reply to @QuantumQuill's last question but hitting a moderator approval wall. In case this goes through: yes, I believe you're correct. Additionally, SSHRC wrote back to me and said you don't need to submit a direct deposit form if you're taking up your award at a Canadian institution. SSHRCMyResponsibilities
What does this mean for us though? SSHRC comes in two instalments. For those taking the award up in May, do we get 10k now and 30k in November? Edited May 31 by SSHRCMyResponsibilities JB9797

That said, I'm questioning if this also means that we won't get our first instalments until they make announcements in July.
wintermute42
I'm wondering the CGS-D will be adjusted for people entering programs...? I'm starting this fall, so only got 36 months at $35k/year because that's the max...but if I had the SSHRC fellowship, it would have been 48 months' eligibility at the $20k/year. I sent an email back to ask, since now they're both worth the same. Edited May 31 by wintermute42
screamingcrying
So does this mean that people with CGS-D and the SSHRC Fellowship will get the same amount per year (40k)? The wording is so confusing lol
