Hello,

I didn't see a spot for Clinical applicants so I thought I would start one. I am currently enrolled in a Masters program and won't be applying for PhD programs until Fall '11. I am applying at both Clinical and Social programs (my area of research is suicide and as such I'm applying at programs that have faculty involved in suicide research).

Clinical applicants, feel free to introduce yourself, discuss your interests, your fears, your hopes and dreams :) whatever you'd like!!

Hello, I'm currently in a Masters program for Clinical Psych and I'm applying to Counseling and Clinical PhD programs for the fall. So far, I've been wait listed by two and I have one interview at UNC on Feb 11. Is anyone else hearing back from, say, UNL, WashU, CSU, Univ. of Toledo, or Ball State? I'm trying to gauge when I should be hearing back or if they have interviewed already. Thanks!

Odd you haven't heard back from UN-L yet; I got a thanks-but-no-thanks from their ClinPsych people two weeks ago. No idea on the others.

Currently, I'm a senior finishing up undergrad; I'll be graduating in April with a BS in psychology.

I've applied to eight Clinical Psychology Ph.D. programs, one Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program, and one Mental Health Counseling MS program.

I heard back from UGA, UNL, and Auburn with "thanks but no thanks" sort of emails. UGH, I hate this wait!

You people are such overachievers :P

Senior undergrad too, finishing up in May. Applied last fall to two schools for Ph.D, after I chickened out of two others because one wouldn't accept 3-year undergrads, and another because... well, I was taking my time with the 3-year one...

Going to try again this year. Re-taking the GRE, and hopefully get 700s? =X

maybe wait till i'm matured enough...

Interviews at the University of Toledo were January 24th and February 4th. I attended the January 24th one, and they had already sent out all invitations and were going to choose from the people who came to interview. Sorry for the bad news!

Hey I'm applying to Clinical psych phd programs this fall for the 2012 academic year. I was wondering whether I should retake the GRE or not. I got a 1230 (v-550 q-680). What do you think? Thanks.

^ Depends on what types of programs you want to apply to. Most top-tier places have cutoffs of 1350 (according to my current lab adviser, who is DCT at a top-tier clinical program), but most others have cutoffs of 1200-1250. For those, you'd be above cutoffs...but it'd be up to you if you're fine with just being "above the absolute minimum" or whether you want to aim more for the average GRE of accepted students or -- if you're feeling competitive -- above that.

Hi guys! This is my first time posting. I'm also planning to apply for a Phd in clinical psych. Do you guys mind answering a few of my questions as well.

1) How did you know you wanted to get a Phd in Clinical Psych? I am planning to get a Phd in that as well, but I am a little unsure. I don't know if I like research, but I need to get a higher degree since a bachelors in Psych means nothing. Plus, I don't know if a MA is worth the money. I am interested in specializing in neuropsychology because I want to be a neuropsychologist, which means I have to get a Phd in Clinical Psych. However, I am not exactly positive I want to be a neuropsychologist. I just need a goal and a career to pursue. By the way, I don't know if I can handle patients with emotional problems, which is one of the reason I wanted to be a neuropsychologist.

2. Do you think I would have a fair chance of getting into a Phd program? I have not published anything yet and I only have about 1 and 1/2 years of relevant research experience ( 6 months co-op in schizophrenia reserach & 3 semester working in NU Psych labs.) As for my GRE (which I took twice), I got a 640 in Verbal ( 670 on the first test), a 750 in Quantitative (a 570 on the first test) and a 4.0 in the essay. I have a 3.94 GPA w/ a BS Psych. Does it look bad that I was unemployed for a year after I graduated in 2010 and currently working as a temp in the Cardiology department at a hospital.

Hi, I'm curious to know what made people choose to go for clinical psych rather than counseling psych. Even though I've read a lot about the differences/similarities between them, it's not super clear to me what would make someone choose one over the other (other than someone who wants to specifically go into something like school counseling). Thanks!

i think if you look into what programs are fitting places to research the questions you're interested in, you'll figure out whether clinical or counseling is for you. i'm interested in psychosocial treatments of schizophrenia, which happens to be the sort of thing researched by faculty associated with clinical programs but not counseling programs. i'm therefore planning to apply to clinical programs.

i believe counseling programs tend to explicitly emphasize community interventions, have a self-proclaimed eye for ecological validity, and tend to have a stake in promoting social justice. these features tend not to be had (to as great an extent) by clinical programs.

this is just my understanding--if something's off here, i'm sorry!

I also have a question of my own. For someone interested in research on schizophrenia, can anyone recommend any schools to look at? I think UNC-Chapel Hill looks like a great fit, but I'd like to look at other options as well naturally. I'm particularly interested in psychosocial interventions as treatments, such as CBT. I'm also interested in mood disorders, and studying how to reduce stigma toward individuals with severe mental illness. If anyone has any pointers on labs to apply to, I'd be most grateful. Staying in the U.S. is definitely not necessary.

Hey, I'm from india and I just finished a 3-yr B.A with specialization in Psychology. Totally stumped now coz I want to apply for MS Clinical Psych but heard that there is an issue with eligibility because USA needs 12+4 yrs of education whereas I only have 12+3.. Would have done an Honors degree had I known this would be an issue!! Does anyone know if its true?? If so.. What should my next move be??

Thanks..
