what if theyre doing it backwards this year.... (probably not but I'm still trying to remain positive LOLLL)

shouldn't we have heard of at least one acceptance? In 2023, Hopkins did something similar, gave out waitlist notifications. I was here on the forum, not sure if the acceptances were received first

Last year acceptances came first, followed by waitlists about a day or two later.

Is it possible they would release waitlists before acceptances? That seems kinda strange.

Hey all, fiction applicant here. Assuming Indiana and JHU are soft rejections for me...feeling a bit blue now. I'm finding it difficult to cope with the possibility that I might not get in anywhere. Does anyone know when University of Oregon might notify?

Last year if I remember right it was the last week of Feb.

Personally, I doubt it. Never say never, but I'm assuming acceptances already went out and the people who were accepted aren't on Draft. It happens sometimes. Not everyone has Facebook or knows about the page.

Keep you chin up! I'm looking at one hard rejection and two soft rejections right now. It's not the end of the world. There's plenty of season left. Try not to let it get you down. I know that's easier said than done. We're here for you if you want to vent or need extra support!

U of O seems to be running later than they did last year. I don't know if anyone knows exactly when those will come out. Fingers crossed you get some good news soon though!

JHU has always notified acceptances first, then waitlists, then rejections. Acceptances are not always posted.

Thanks! Not too hopeful, but I guess all I can do is wait and see. This is my first cycle applying. Definitely learning a lot and I'm sure I'll be back at it again next year.

Thank you - that really means a lot. Same goes for you, always here if you want to talk/vent/scream! Trying my best not to let it get me down, hope you're doing that too. Wishing you the best of luck for the rest of your apps too!!

Appreciate the info on Oregon. Not too optimistic, but some hope is better than no hope!

How are people feeling about OSU? I’m surprised we haven’t heard anything aside from one acceptance on draft.

I'm considering it a soft rejection tbh. I think they take 4-6 per genre, so I feel like it's most likely those other few acceptances just aren't on the forums.

OSU isn’t done. They accept 2 people early each year for fellowships. One of those was posted around 2/6.

Waitlists for them usually come out around the 2/16 based on past years (I was waitlisted by them on 2/21 last year).

The real acceptances are bound to come out any day now. They accept 4 each genre, so 12 total.

Hey everyone! It’s my first time applying for an MFA in fiction— I’ll be done with with undergrad in May.

I was recently waitlisted at FSU (yay!) and had a Zoom with Mark Winegardner, the director of the program. He validated my writing which was incredible to experience and also explained FSU does not usually accept students fresh out of undergrad. Apparently, most schools like to accept applicants with life experience and diversified interests and careers. He was really honest and I appreciated the sentiments he made. I was most likely waitlisted due to my internships and experience with administrative work in the writing program at my college.

Is anyone else applying out of undergrad/ applied before? The call both boosted my confidence and also made me fearful of how other schools I applied to will perceive me because of my age (22). My writing professors warned me that I will not likely receive any offers due to my age.

I’m hopeful and terrified at the same time. Is anyone else feeling similar? Thank you for reading!  Good luck everyone :)

congrats on the waitlist !! hoping your other schools work out for you!

i am kinda sorta in the same boat -- i graduated may '24 at 21 so i am still very much 22 and still very much worried about being perceived as too young/inexperienced/etc. i am hoping they at least acknowledge the year's gap, which i took to really flesh out my work/save money, but i am kicking myself in not mentioning how i am spending it in my sop/personal statements (mostly just talked about my writerly interests/why i write/what i hope to do, which is to become a teacher/professor ultimately) / my favorite schools didn't require a CV detailing internship/scholarship stuff, so i didn't include mine, and UGH i so wish i did bc they did allow extra documents.

i am really gunning towards finishing school here in the u.s. so i can freely move overseas to my other home country afterwards, so i am really praying for any acceptance this year lol, even though i know there is a practical reason why most schools prefer older candidates/there is a very real possibility i can't compete. im so scared!!

Seeing people get multiple acceptances/waitlists at all the schools I applied to while I receive complete silence makes me feel like shit. I’ve only had one hard rejection so far but at this point half the schools I applied to have notified acceptances and waitlists and I feel like what even was the point in applying? Why did I waste so much time and money?

This is really hard, and the numbers are just stacked against everyone. It is early on so I hope we can hold out hope, but as a lot of people said it does possibly take a few times. I've already written a whole new collection of poems that I'm more excited to share, than I was in December, so if anything I hope everyone can see a light in this bleak process. I'm banking on applying next year, and I'm happy with how much it pushed me, and how much stronger I've already become, but boy was this all more brutal than I thought it would be.

I'm so, so sorry. This process sucks. I feel for you. Hell, I've felt exactly the same way this week.

I'm hardly an expert (on anything really) but in my limited experience it helps to let yourself feel every bit of it, all the way down to the bone. Wallow, cry, scream, punch pillows, whatever feels right. Make it an all-day thing if you have to. By the end of it you might find some relief, however minor.

And just to reiterate: one of these schools had 638 applications for four spots. FOUR. Another very likely had a similar number of applicants, if not more, and accepted three. There's nothing to learn from that. It is what it is. It doesn't mean you're a bad writer, or that in another season you wouldn't have been one of those selected. This is a gamble.

I do wish programs had more openings. I also wish we had more indication of where we landed if we made it near the top but not high enough to get on a waitlist. I've learned to stop expecting much from this process.

It's never a waste of time to believe in yourself and invest in a possible future, even if that future never pans out. I know that sounds corny as shit, but it's the truth.

The first time I applied, I didn't know about the draft or forum until I was waitlisted somewhere, which was my second to last notif and so I spent February through March in a state of ignorant bliss of all the other notifs going out. I miss that period of innocence. It's easy to feel disheartened seeing others get in and especially to multiple places, but that doesn't mean this is for nothing! As many people have said, the path of a writer is full of rejection and these are really really competitive programs. I also agree with Zaira that you should let yourself feel it. It sucks ass. But this isn't the end all be all ❤️

Could not have said it any better! I feel like the whole application process, albeit exhausting, taught us a little bit more about ourselves and our identities as writers. Also - literature and poetry are so subjective to personal taste that there is no point in pulling our hairs out trying to figure out what we could've done differently!

Sorry you feel this way :(. This is exactly my mindset right now too. It's so painful, but I guess all we can do is move on. I applied to thirteen schools, feeling like two of them are soft rejections. Doesn't bode well for the rest and I'm just mentally preparing for a full sweep of rejections. I'll definitely try again next year, but I know how you feel - it's so painful :(. I hope you'll find it within yourself to keep writing and pick up the pieces to go for it again. Don't let this define you!

Does anybody know anything about Boise State or Northern Michigan University? I applied to them very last minute when I was panicking and wanting to add more apps but I don't usually hear too much about either one on the forums. Just curious if anybody has intel.

What kind of intel? I know Boise is a small 3-year program. You only teach one course per semester and it is Creative Writing-related, not Freshman Comp. If you already have a masters, you can teach a Form/Theory course. They welcome interest in translation. You work on a thesis during your last year.

Stipend seems lowish for the city? But maybe fair considering the teaching load? I don't know. I wish it was higher than $11k.
