looks like Michener (I'm assuming) interview went out for screenwriting, anyone know if they throw out interviews for poetry (or other disciplines) at around the same time?

I know it's not for everyone, but this week feels quieter than I expected.  I was hoping to hear from UNLV or CSU this week but I'm hoping that next week bears good news! I know that CSU already accepted one fiction person so I'll cross my fingers for a waitlist ❤️

Many of my programs notify later so idk why I'm holding my breath but what else is a girl to do? Actually be productive at work?

i feel this so much lol… for the past two weeks ive been like This is the week! cus i thought wash u stl would’ve notified by now and also ole miss but here we are

Hi, everyone! I need someone to say they're going nuts too. I haven't heard from anybody yet, I know BU and KU have already sent some decisions, so I keep refreshing my email as if mine was somehow lost on its way to my inbox.

Has BU sent out decisions? I only see a handful of poetry rejections, which is pretty normal for them. They tend to scatter their notifications over the course of a few weeks. Am I missing a notification somewhere?

Between my inbox and this page, my "browser-refresh muscle" is working overtime... glad to know I'm not alone.

Was going to say the same thing. I've only seen Poetry from BU. I'm hoping there's some movement from them next week.

A true anecdote about acceptance that I heard in a Dharma lecture at Wild Heart Meditation Center:

A little girl buys this absolutely perfect sunflower at the farmer's market. Overjoyed by this perfect sunflower, she runs across the market to show her parents. As she runs, she notices that several perfect petals fall off and flutter to the ground. She stops, looks down at the lost petals, and exclaims: "Oh! Okay! Bye bye!" Then turns and continues on her way.

Thank you for your practice, kiddo. So may we all 🙏🌻

What do people think about submitting novel excerpts vs. short stories? I submitted novel excerpts this time around and I'm really wondering if that was a poor choice. I've been debating (since yesterday) if I should put my novel aside from now and start working on several short stories from now so that they can be polished and ready for next year's cycle. Any thoughts on that?

The advice I was given was that it's more strategic to submit several short works rather than one long novel excerpt.  The reason being that with a novel excerpt all your eggs are in that one basket.  Whereas if you submit a few short stories (or essays depending on your genre) if one doesn't quite land with the adcom maybe others will.  I took this advice, applied with shorter pieces, and had successful apps.  Obviously always submit what is truly your best work, but if you're already thinking about next years cycle yes working on short stories sounds like a smart idea.

Thank you for getting back to me! I hear you loud and clear. Definitely going to take that advice for next year. I've already decided to put the novel aside and get to work on some short stories that've been brewing in the back of my mind for a while now. It makes sense why short stories are preferred, tbh. Appreciate the help :)

Can anyone who has had an interview talk about what it was like? What questions were asked in the interview? How did you feel going into it and at the end?

Thank you!

I interviewed for two programs last year.  One was really low-key and conversational and I got into the program.  The other was very formal and honestly kind of snobby and I left the interview thinking I would not attend if accepted.  Didn't get into that one.  Be prepared to talk about what you're reading and why it's made an impression on you.  Be prepared to talk about what you intend to work on if admitted to their program.  Be prepared to talk about what your current writing practice looks like.

Damn, grapefruit if you're here...I'll have what you're having. Huge congrats! 🫢

The amount of talent to be accepted at multiple schools that only take a few per genre is CRAZY! Definitely makes me doubt myself and I know a lot of us feel the same way, but it's still so subjective and even the most talented writer is bound to get a couple rejections if they apply to the top 10 most competitive schools. If I don't get in anywhere, I think I need to just tell myself that it means I'm not quite far along enough in finding my voice/style yet, and not that it means that I'm lacking in innate talent.

hi y’all sending lots of hugs in this stressful time. I wonder if you know any online writing group/workshop (or nyc offline) where mfa applicants can help each other develop their writing? 🫂 English is not my first language but I love the feeling of “approaching the edge of the world/ surpassing myself in a foreign language”. I’m happy that I made a brave decision to try applying for fiction program in the states even if it was not my major and I might get several rejections. I’m ready to go back to China this summer because I just graduated in feb. But I will continue to read and write in English (I still remember the first time i read Toni Morrison and ocean vuong I felt like a new world opening up). I had wonderful memories in the US and still wanna connect with the writer communities. If you have any recommendations I would be very happy. My ig is @lifeifei if any international appli friends wanna connect hehe love y’all
