Emerson Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 So with Northwestern being the first school to send out mass rejections, I think it is safe to say that the period of waiting is starting to peak. Sure a lot of schools will be waiting till the last week of February, and a small handful will wait until March (*cough*Boston*cough*), but I think these next two weeks are the most intense. Any predictions on how it will all roll out? My guess is that Wisconsin will send out their mass notifications tomorrow, if not today. The rest of this week will include Yale, Stanford, and Berkeley, in that order. Next week will go UPenn, Harvard, Chicago, and then Virginia. What are your guesses? (Note: I have no insider knowledge, and I would not bet even $1 on any of my predictions. I checked the results page from last year for a rough estimate, then pulled the rest out of my arse.)
NadaJ Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Hmm...interesting. Are you taking into account the snowstorm that hit the midwest and east coast?

MegMill Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I feel as if I'm already buried under the avalance. Three rejections in as many days has me reeling...

thepoorstockinger Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Looking at previous years it seems like the week of the 15th is usually a pretty intense period of contact. I may buy a cake next Monday so I can either celebrate if things go well or eat my sorrow away if things go poorly. anonacademic 1
Emerson Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 I feel as if I'm already buried under the avalance. Three rejections in as many days has me reeling... My sincere sympathy, and I'm sure I'll be joining your sorrow soon! Though I imagine you'll be getting good news in these next two weeks.
Emerson Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 A Yale acceptance today, anyone want to claim it? Major congrats!

natsteel Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 A Yale acceptance today, anyone want to claim it? Major congrats! It was me. It wasn't an official email but I received the following email from my POI at around noon: natsteel, I just received word from the Graduate Office that you're being offered admission to Yale -- and wanted to offer congratulations! I also wanted to offer again -- as I did during our coffee -- to chat with you if you have further questions. If you end up considering several different graduate programs and want to bounce ideas around, I'd be happy to help with that as well. (I promise to be unbiased!) Probably later today, you'll be extended an invitation for Campus Visit Day -- which is normally a really nicely organized (and informal) chance to see campus, meet some faculty, and see some of the other people who will be joining the program. Unfortunately, since I'm on leave, I won't be on campus that day. But we could meet again here in NYC, if that ends up making sense down the road. Anyway -- I mostly wanted to offer my congratulations! All best, POI I am ecstatic beyond belief at this news. I was checking my email during an 11am class and saw this. I got up, left the room, and ran back forth in the hallway jumping up and down for five minutes and then took another five to throw water on my face in the bathroom to compose myself before I could go back in. Then I called my wife and father on FaceTime and told them the news. thepoorstockinger and Safferz 2

TMP Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 WOW! CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Yeah, I'd do the same. I'm surprised that you didn't scream in the hallway. I would've. Mmmm... No betting for me for this week... I'm telling you, I'm not expecting anything until after February 20th. I need something by the 24th so I can get drunk in celebration or sorrow with my friend when I visit him!

By the way, judging by the way that email is written, and based upon my own dealings with that professor, I think I know exactly who the POI is. He/she is an outstanding scholar and I think you'll be very happy if you decide to attend Yale. Best wishes! Edited February 7, 2011 by Kai210

Jdealla Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I have my money on Princeton this week too I would love this. It's my top choice and I think it'll make things easier going ahead if I already know the response for my top choice.
Jdealla Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 (edited) Oh, and congrats to natsteel. I'm pretty sure I would have just left class for good. I know that if I'm teaching an English class here and I get an acceptance with funding I'm going to tell my student that I'm going out to celebrate at that moment (even if it's my 6:45 am class) and they can come with me if they want, but if not, then we're done for the day. Bukharan Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Congratulations on the Yale acceptance! I can only imagine your happiness now!!! Results from the last year suggest that Stanford must report... like, now! I think 5th and 6th February were in GradCafe database. UCLA and Chicago acceptances could be out next week, according to the previous results.

BadgerHopeful Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Congrats Natsteel!! What wonderful news!
natsteel Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Thanks to all of you for the congratulations. The whole day has gone by in a kind of hazy numbness. The best part was telling my wife, my family, and, of course, my mentors. At the same time, though, it makes me want the best possible results for everyone here. I feel extremely fortunate at this moment and hope the rest of you get to experience the joy and release of stress and tension that comes with getting an acceptance. Thanks again, everyone!!!
