Poj Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 Hi Poj, I'm from the US and I've had to do some research to figure out the whole April 15th thing! From what people have said on this forum and other places, you first have to figure out what your top choices are. If Umass is your top choice, then its best to pick one of the other programs as back-up and notify the the third that you decline. Then, if you still haven't heard from Umass by the 15th, then you ask your second choice for a decision extension. This approach obviously only works if Umass is your first choice. If it isn't, then you don't have to wait and you can decide between your other two offers. Good luck figuring it out! Thanks for your reply and good luck to you
jmacnomad Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 I wrote UMass yesterday and heard back today. They said they were able to secure many people from their first round and are probably not going too deep into their waitlist. They said it was unlikely that I will get an offer, but it's not totally out of the question. I'd suggest checking in with them if you haven't already. You may be in a better position than me! That being said I got in off the waitlist at UW-Seattle and will most likely be accepting. I'm thrilled! Best of luck to you all!

jmacnomad Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 (edited) I also emailed the director last week but haven't heard back from her. I'd suggest trying again. She said that most of their acceptances have come in the last few days. Perhaps she knows more now. Edited April 8, 2011 by jmacnomad
Poj Posted April 8, 2011 Author Posted April 8, 2011 I'd suggest trying again. She said that most of their acceptances have come in the last few days. Perhaps she knows more now. Thanks for your suggestion. Congrats on your entry to U of Washington. It's a great program and there are some, for instance Lance Bennett, who I really want to study with. I missed a chance to apply because the application for international students closed quite early.

commtome Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 That being said I got in off the waitlist at UW-Seattle and will most likely be accepting. I'm thrilled! Best of luck to you all! Wow this is great! That is one of your top choices, right? Congrats, jmac!! You've gone through this painful uncertainty, and you deserve it!

jmacnomad Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 and PS. Today I got a parking ticket from the town of Amherst that dates back to 2008. They sent it to my mother's address, which hasn't been my address for years. I'll take that as a sign if there ever was one! ha!
commtome Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Yep, sure is! I'm thrilled. :DHow are things shaping up for you? Oh, I'm sure there will be no changes in my status until THE day, though I occasionally dream about a guy who declines a couple of offers from where he was waitlisted. Anyway, congrats again, jmac!

bwa Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 I also heard from the dept. (April 11) letting me know that due to the high number of acceptances from round one, it "looks increasingly unlikely" that I will be offered admission. That is not good.
Jcantrone Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 hmm..well they HAVE to be letting in some people from the waitlist. Just depends where you're at on that list. I wouldn't necessarily abandon all hope.. if it was the grad secretary who told you that, there's a chance she might not be up to speed on the rankings of the waitlist (I'm sure the rankings change a bit, depending on whose accepted their offers and what their research interests are) and might be responding with a sort of boilerplate message to all applicants who ask. MHouse Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Has *anyone* on the Umass waitlist gotten off the waitlist/ or gotten ANY word from them whatsoever? I've been told that admission looks unlikely.. but I believe in miracles!

commtome Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 I was informed from the director that the department will give me a definitive admission response next week. That's not bad. Thanks for the info. Hope they send out the results ASAP. How was the tone? Did she allude to your status, or just give the "information"? BTW, Poj, have you requested the extension for your final decision from the other programs you got in, while waiting for the result from UMass?

BTW, Poj, have you requested the extension for your final decision from the other programs you got in, while waiting for the result from UMass? The director gave me a kind response in the email that, "All members of the Graduate Admissions Committee remain very much impressed with your application materials." I asked for an extension of the deadline from one of my top choices.

I'm not sure whether it's a good sign or not but after having been through all the processes I think everything seems to be ok for me.
jmacnomad Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Good luck to you both! I hope you hear good news from them soon.
MHouse Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Anyone heard anything this week? Still nothing here. Really hoping against hope that this one pans out. This is my 2nd year applying and this is the last school I have a chance at. Don't know if I can survive a third round of this!

This is my 2nd year applying and this is the last school I have a chance at. Don't know if I can survive a third round of this! I haven't heard anything from them either; although, I already informed them that I was taking another offer. I may never hear from them! I just checked the online application and it still says "applied." Good luck to you MHouse! I hope it works out for you this year!
MHouse Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 I see some rejections on the results page... still haven't gotten email notification... one person said "they are not pulling from the waitlist." does that mean AT ALL? no one is going to get off the waitlist? grrrrrrrrrrrrr

This is the wording "In the end, we are able to admit only about 12 into our incoming class. As a result of this process, I am sorry to inform you that while your application had merits, it was not among those admitted."

I'm sorry, but you know, you don't really need to feel that bad because of this ridiculous process. After all you've got a great offer from your top choice. BTW was that you who posted the rejection on the results board? I'm curious how many people received the email notification today.
