@NUcat72_do we just send the Admissions Dept. an email declining the offer?  I actually didn't get to leave for LA!  my flight was canceled at midnight (I flew out at 6am) and I couldn't get ahold of the person i was staying with...moved the trip to next week (Tuesday), which is cutting it really close to RISD's deadline--I'll let you know

how it goes!  I already sent ArtCenter their $200, because they take people on a first come basis. they said I could still decline if I wanted.  So, I'll probably be out $200 by the end of all of this.  ah well.  I started a new topic, on this, but I'm assuming no one has any ideas yet, but maybe you do...any leads on good apt housing near RISD?  i'm pretty clueless about the area, and i'm trying to figure out if on campus housing is the best option or not.

@helsinki_i don't know too much, but i do know carleton is a very highly ranked school in canada.  to me it seemed like their program is very interdisciplinary which is very important to me.  you know, grad school is what you make of it.  name dropping and whatnot might be important to somet, but it really comes down to your work and what you're interested in pursuing.  since your undergrad is engineering, then i would consider going anyway...especially if you have almost a full ride.

I myself am 25 and have an undergrad in architecture. I graduated two years ago this May.   honestly, I don't have much professional experience in the field. i'm assuming my portfolio is my strong point. jobs are hard to come by around here. I worked for an arch firm as an intern last summer, and just recently started working for my professor's firm. I did, while working at a transplant immunology lab to make some dollars, participate in a number of competitions in both architecture and painting...I keep myself pretty busy.

you could either go for grad school now, or wait and reapply next year--and within that year really focus on your design work and portfolio--what you want to pursue.  chin up though. I think you still have a great option. it will all work out.

@prickly pear: Oh that sucks about your flight, be sure to let us know how it goes when you return next week!

I've been researching the Providence area like a mad man. The area is pretty sweet and I have been impressed by what I've seen online so far. I've decided to live off campus since I am bringing my spouse along for this epic journey and found a few decently priced apartment options a short walk to campus. So it looks like living off campus is a viable option, though RISD's on campus options look good as well. I dropped my $300 deposit in the mail this morning to hold my spot, and boy does it feel weird officially sealing the deal! (my wallet feel quite a bit lighter as well) I will be visiting the campus sometime in the near future, so I will let everyone know how it goes!

ah! you may have a lighter wallet, but that's so exciting! i probably just need to just send risd its money now anyway. I'm 90% sure that's where I'll be going. I think I'll be living off campus as well. I've never lived in a dorm, nor am I great with roommates. I'll need to strat researching soon! I'll keep you guys posted with the visit to art center!

It was nice to see that there was at least ONE thread for us IDers!

I'm NYC born and raised so Brooklyn doesn't scare me too much ;-)

Pratt's philosophy fits me well and I know lots of people who have gone there so I feel comfortable with my choice!

Wow another ID person! One of us... one of us... j/k :P It's always nice to see other ID people! We are 4 strong in this forum now (credit to helsinki for creating it) with probably a few more "lurkers" hanging out in the shadows and reading the posts lol.

I bet you are excited about Pratt Schaf100, they have a great program. My wife was always afraid of the possibility of living in New York (she is a southern bell and watches too much CSI and Law and Order lol) but I guess she doesn't have to worry about that now, though we might take a few trips up to visit the city. Congrats on your acceptance!

Thanks so much!! You too!!

Have you finalized where you're going to end up yet?

congrats schaf100 on your acceptances!

as of now it's between RISD's Furniture Design program and Art Center's Industrial Design Program. I'm going to visit ArtCenter next week. I did already give them their deposit though. I called and they said acceptance is on a first come basis, and that i could put down the deposit and later decline. I hadn't seen the school yet and didn't want to lose out. I'm worried about looking like an ass after visiting and accepting and then resending my application. it's a big decision though, and they don't give you time to make one, so hopefully they'll understand. :/

So true - Pratt's enrollment deadline is May 1st . It was my first choice so it was a bit easier for me, but if it hadn't been I would have been scrambling to get myself to Pasadena, Savannah and then Brooklyn while working in less than 2 weeks!

By the way - Pasadena as a town is really nice and if you're from the East Coast it feels like a vacation all the time. I lived out in LA for a while and really liked it there. I think it probably would have been where I went if Pratt didn't work out for me. The thought of lugging delicately carved blocks of balsa foam on the subway in the rain and snow really sounds awful compared to all that sunshine!

Take your time as best you can - I felt comfortable with Pratt already because I took 3 continuing-ed classes there before I applied and met lots of students and faculty. It was like a 3 month visit. If I hadn't - this would be an extremely hard choice for me right now!!

Pratt sounds like the perfect fit then! That's really exciting--and you already live in NY!

I've asked RISD for an extension, but haven't heard anything back yet. I just need a extra week, but from the looks of it I doubt they'll be too understanding of my situation...I have a meeting with ArtCenter the 14th, and RISD's deposit is due the next day. I'm thinking maybe I'll same day RISD the deposit and email them Friday if I decide to go there. ugh. two weeks to make a life changing decision is just not enough time. i feel like I should know where I want tog o by now, but just don't.

I know RISD is telling wait listed people that they'll hear late April so I would think they're gonna be sort of tough about it but who knows! Everything was so late this year I feel like nobody has had a chance to really think about it.. It's always a good problem to have options though (but still a problem!).

I would secure anything you can if you're really on the fence - would stink to lose the opportunity over $500 here and there given the ultimate overall cost of 2-3yrs in school!

extension granted! whew!...

and true that--in regards to the money thing. what's 500 bucks compared to the cost of graduate school. it will be three years at risd, two at art center...

that's pretty great you could take continuing ed at pratt!

excited about the trip tuesday!

Anyone making decisions for ID this year? I'm curious where everyone in this thread wound up last year.

I am currently considering Pratt, Art Center, and NCSU. Waitlisted at Stanford, and most likely going to decline CCA. Any thoughts or feedback on any programs are welcomed and appreciated!

Thought I'd revive this thread seeing that everyone applying for ID will have submitted their apps by now for the upcoming school year.

Just wanted to see where people applied, what your background is, and what school/outcome you're hoping for.  So, I'll start things off.

I graduated with B.Arch degree in 2011.  Though I have been working for an architecture firm in San Francisco since then, I realized that architecture wasn't the best fit for me.  After completing several furniture projects on my own, attending design lectures, and reading books about design companies/designers like Knoll, Herman Miller, George Nelson, etc., I wanted to go to grad school for industrial design.

I applied to Art Center and Stanford.  I know it's a very selective group, but I was told my portfolio was very strong and I wouldn't have gone to other schools should I have been accepted.  Also, I really want to stay in the west coast.  I would be fine going to either school but should I get rejected to both, I'll continue working and apply again in a couple years or so after I get a bit more life experiences.  At 25 years old, I'm younger than most applicants and schools might want someone who's more "mature," but we'll see how it goes when decisions come out.

For people who applied in previous years or are in school right now, how was your school app/decision experience and is there anything else that we should know about.  I would love for people to share their experiences so we can get this thread going.

Good luck to everyone.

Want to revive this post to check upon this year's applicants for ID program. Did anyone heard anything back from the schools you've applied to?

Found out yesterday evening via email that I've been accepted at Georgia Tech.

Congrats on getting in Georgia Tech! I am still in the dark tunnel of infinite waiting...

Yeah, I've got plenty of waiting yet to go. Really would like these things to start rolling in quickly now.

Feels like the previous experiences are very true, ID are always the last on the list. Jaeti have you had any interviews with the schools you applied to?

I had a Skype interview with the assistant dean at IIT in Chicago three weeks ago. I also was rejected by CCS in early February but they basically do rolling admissions, I believe.

I guess we are applying to different genre of schools. Most the schools I applied to are heavy in Art and Design. I got turned down by Art Center last week, and the wait just turned a bit more torturous...

Well, I applied to all sorts of schools. I don't have an art/design background, so I was first looking for schools with 3-year programs where Year 1 "catches me up". And beyond that I applied to several two-year programs that say they're willing to accept non-design background applicants. CCS was like that, even though it's pretty "business-y", so I didn't expect to get in there. IIT is more business-y, too. But I've got several name-brand art schools in there, too. Just trying to maximize my chances, really.

I should have done more research before selecting only name-brand art schools. My chances are limited to Fine Art schools with a completely irreverent science undergrad degree. Hopefully the programs are open for diversity, other than that I have no idea what are my chances of getting accepted to those schools...
