Bukharan Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Is anyone else waiting for that? http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools As of now, the new ranking (the old ranking is three years old?) is being released in 40 minutes. Not that rankings really matter, of course.
queller Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 I am definitely waiting. As rather nice it is coming out again right before I apply next year. Even if I have 2/4 schools I am planning on applying to already decided on. Hopes Stony Brook is in the top 50 for CS. Either way I am planning on applying there.
eklavya Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 i don't really care about this because they don't have rankings for my focus area.
eklavya Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 and 40 minutes in your part of the world my friend. here (US Pacific time) the clock's got over 6 hours remaining
Bukharan Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 (edited) and 40 minutes in your part of the world my friend. here (US Pacific time) the clock's got over 6 hours remaining Oh really? Riiight. I guess they are just making it midnight for everyone then! ... Actually, how does that work? Edited March 15, 2011 by Bukharan
Eigen Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 I haven't checked to see if they changed the methodology... But if they're still going off of the old one, there were a huge number of flaws in the ranking system, especially in how it weighted funding. For accurate "ratings" I'd go with the NRC over US News and World Report. Bukharan and fluffy 1 1
newms Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I'm curious to see how the schools I've been accepted to rate relative to last year. And yes they seem to be waiting for midnight everywhere - it's showing just under 4 hours for EST. Maybe I'll try a proxy from across the Atlantic
michpc Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 i don't really care about this because they don't have rankings for my focus area. same.
Bukharan Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 A bit disappointing really. Sure, they added some new (technical) fields and updated a few, including medicine and law but they didn't update their Social Sciences at all, it seems. I guess we'll have to live with the ranking of 2009 for History, Political Science, English and such.
oldwolf Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I like phds.org for ranking graduate programs -- depending on the priorities you set in the ranking scheme, you can get some rather interesting universities much higher in rank than expected. Just my personal preference. I know that the totally unbiased perception-based ranking system has plenty of its own unique merits. Strangefox and fluffy 1 1

I guess we'll have to live with the ranking of 2009 for History, Political Science, English and such. Same thing with the physical sciences, at least the earth sciences. The last time they updated it was 2010. While rankings are useful and all as a good starting place, I dont think they are the best for final decisions for where you are going to apply. Phds.org seems better because you can search based more on what qualities are more important to you, but their data is much less frequent, and still doesn't cover all the schools you might look at.
neuropsych76 Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Don't you have to pay to see the full list anyway? Besides, I keep hearing rankings of grad schools don't matter much, its more important how good the advisor you are working with is.

Not that rankings really matter, of course. If this is the 2012 edition, I am confused as to why they say 2010 when I go to this: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-science-schools/chemistry-rankings I haven't checked to see if they changed the methodology...
