  1. Attending U of Washington as well for pure math. I never visited the campus, but I've heard it's beautiful. I did have the opportunity to visit Seattle last December for a conference and it seemed pretty spectacular.
  2. I like phds.org for ranking graduate programs -- depending on the priorities you set in the ranking scheme, you can get some rather interesting universities much higher in rank than expected. Just my personal preference. I know that the totally unbiased perception-based ranking system has plenty of its own unique merits.
  3. May be kinda a long shot, but I'm guessing the dude's econ
  4. How do you know already? That's actually kinda nice ... being all squared away for next year. I'm still trying to decide between the places I've been accepted to (not to mention waiting to hear back from other places still)
  5. I use Gentoo. I get a lot of smack about how long it takes to set up the thing initially. "How many weeks did your install take?" is a typical example. But once it's up and running, assuming you keep it updated, it's pretty sweet. Linux overall is great if you find yourself doing a lot of code development -- which is a tendency in math, physics, computer science, etc. And it's marketable: many physics and math internship programs (don't know about other fields) are now listing UNIX as required/preferred experience.
  6. I'm in the same boat as you for a couple schools. It certainly feels some schools keep us around as a backup plan in case they can't get a date with the super-popular kid. boom. metaphor. that just happened.
  7. What about equation viewing in E-Readers. I read somewhere (can't for the life of me remember where) that there are some issues in displaying non-traditional text format in PDF's, such as math equation output from LaTeX documents. Is there anybody had any experience reading technical documents with any E-Readers who could confirm or deny?
  8. No way! I can see it in the future of rejection letters -- advertisements for online programs and obscure colleges like ETS does currently with their "search service". "While we feel that you would be out of place at our institution, Larry's Cheap Part-Time Degrees is a unique establishment that would be VERY excited to consider you for their department." Incredibly screwed up! Good riddance to them (the school)
  9. Got rejected from Johns Hopkins ... Ate an entire pizza and watched Sleepless in Seattle.
