durango1192 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Hello all, Thanks for reading my post, have a question for you all. I have recently received an acceptance letter from one school which I have already signed and returned. However, even more recently I have received another offer, which I am considering. My question for you all is , is it possible to rescind an offer which you have already accepted to take another offer. If so, do any of you have a story to tell, such as what happened exactly, and how common this occurs. Thanks -PhD applicant

Thanks -PhD applicant I think as long as both schools adhere to the April 15th guidelines this is acceptable, but slightly frowned upon. If you really like the other school you were accepted to then I would change offers since you'd be stuck somewhere you don't like for 5+ years. Good luck!
chaospaladin Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 What schools are these and what is your PhD program? lbru66, riceandbeans, Eigen and 3 others 6
newms Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Yes it's possible to do so without consequence before April 15 - but keep in mind that you might be burning bridges with future colleagues as it will be frowned upon. After April 15 (assuming that it's a funded offer), you would have to get released from the first commitment in order to go to another school.
kaykaykay Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Till apr.15 you can do this without any problem (let both programs know). After the 15th you will have to get an official release, which can be frowned upon. I never heard of anyone who was denied the release though, schools do not want to force students to attend if they do not want to.
wtncffts Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I agree with everyone else, on the condition that you're talking about signatories to that April 15th resolution. You didn't give any details, so I assume they are (I think most US schools are).
durango1192 Posted March 27, 2011 Author Posted March 27, 2011 Thanks guys for the advice, its really such a difficult choice. One program is close to my family and friends and has an excellent stipend, the other program is very far away with a less attractive stipend. However, I told myself that if I got into the first program I would stick with it. But recently I am really considering the other offer. Frankly the offer letter is very attractive. Both programs are really great schools and programs. The biomedical research laboratories are really excellent. What a difficult decision.
