number35 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Just got admission email from GWs MPA this afternoon. Was really surprised they came back so fast, but I won't complain! Just an email from the dept, letter from the graduate school to come...
policy_applicant Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I applied to UMD and my application was complete Dec. 11. I have been expecting to hear for awhile now since they have rolling admissions. I checked my application status and a decision has been made and it said to expect my letter soon. I am very nervous. That's just mean! Haven't they heard of email?
EHC Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 anyone here applied to the Ph.D. of the Josef Korbel School at Denver U?? thanks
happyhulalola Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I have applied to U Denver's Korbel, Syracuse U's Maxwell, GW, and Georgetown for MA programs in International Security. Reading all of your posts makes me nervous. I hate being stuck in this limbo phase of waiting, but I am sure I have a lot longer to wait than all of you. So far I have received an e-mail from Denver stating that my application is now under review... I graduated in May of 2008 from U Minnesota, has everyone else been out for a while? Anyone going for International Security?
salman33 Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Hey Everyone, Quick question, So i got a call from one of the grad schools for policy. They said they were impressed with my app and loved my Personal statement. They said I am a strong candidate....buttt... They asked me if i really wanted to go to their school, as in would their program allow me to do what I want. They also mentioned how they would want to the program to fullfill my career objectives. ? random huh. I have 2 areas of interest, and one of them the school has, the other not so much. Anyways the phone call went well, I spoke to ad com people. Im kinda freaking out, i feel that maybe my app didnt present a strong enough case.
applicant Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Hello everyone, I'm new to this site. I have applied to MPP programs for Fall 2009. I'm wondering, could anyone give me any thoughts about getting in Harvard-JFK (MPP) directly after undergrad. I do have a great app, or at least I reckon it great, with stellar reccs, high scores, lots of experience volunteering, working for NGOs, government etc (all during my undergrad). I appreciate any info. Thanks and I hope you're handling your wait well!
policy_applicant Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 At least you got your acceptance and scholarship first! It would have been rough the other way around. Their loss.
linden Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Plate: Sorry about the rejection to UMD. It is strange because you seem to be a strong candidate overall and especially for their program. applicant: Here's a thread on chances of admission to Kennedy. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=14557 Good luck!
mivida Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Plate: Sorry about the rejection to UMD. It is strange because you seem to be a strong candidate overall and especially for their program. Oh well, you're in at a better-ranked program, so who gives a flying's rat ass about UMD? I wonder if the program just knew that as a strong candidate there was a snowball's chance in hell that you would attend... applicant: Here's a thread on chances of admission to Kennedy. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=14557 Good luck! Maybe it is a case of overqualified? Who knows...got no sense of their standard of admission.
gator09 Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 I'm new to this website but had a question. I've been admitted to the MPA programs at GWU and American for fall '09 and was wondering everyone's opinion on which is "better"? I'm still waiting to hear from NYU and Columbia (hopefully sooner rather than later). Thanks!

I'm still waiting to hear from NYU and Columbia (hopefully sooner rather than later). Thanks! If you browse through previous threads, especially ones from last year, you can probably get a good sense of the board consensus. If I remember correctly, all the DC programs are tied on the U.S. News rankings (I'm too lazy to double check), but from what I've gathered, GW is a bit more respected than American. That said, both schools have the DC location, and you can take classes from any of the DC programs (including GPPI), so the differences are only marginal. Definitely check previous threads, though, because there's been plenty of discussion on this topic. I think we're going to hear from NYU this week...
thombo Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Fist time posting, but I've read this thread top to bottom and appreciate all the information and debate. One thing I haven't read about specifically and would like to hear opinions on is the strength of different programs with regards to International Trade. I'm looking to get into the trade and int'l commerce arena and wonder based on experience or research if anyone has opinions about which schools are best positioned for that specific area. I'm currently considering SAIS, Fletcher, SIPA, GTown, GW and internationally, LSE and the Geneva Graduate School (any specific thoughts on these or additional names to add to the list are appreciated). Thanks.
lm776c Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Hey guys! So I noticed in the results and a couple posts above, that the MPP and MPA students applying to GWU got their notifications? I'm applying to the public policy and administration Ph.d and haven't heard anything yet. Does anyone know if they announce the MPP/MPA people first and then move on to evaluate the Ph.d students or should I start worrying about not hearing anything? thanks
Rutabaga Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 PhD's at GW are definitely after the masters notifications. I'm still waiting as well, so I think we're still fine.
lm776c Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 i did a little looking on this website and and another and it looks like the phds get announced right at the end of february so i guess we still have some time to wait, unfortunately. I'm super nervous, mainly because i dont have a background in policy (engineering) and looking at the statistics on the website, I am several years younger the youngest person accepted last year.
splic Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 This thread has fallen ominously silent! Are people getting rejections? Or are they getting acceptances and staying silent so that they don't jinx it? I haven't heard anything from anyone yet, so I'm slowly-but-surely freaking out...

Or are they getting acceptances and staying silent so that they don't jinx it? I haven't heard anything from anyone yet, so I'm slowly-but-surely freaking out... Splic: You seem to be a fabulous candidate, from the information I remember from your posts. Maybe the time frame for releasing decisions for international students is a bit different. (I think I remember you're an international student.) For example, last year, I remember reading in some thread on AutoAdmit that the phone-a-thon day for international students was the last day, after domestic applicants had already been called. Schools do seem to be reporting decisions at around the same dates they did in 2008 and 2007. But, I know that the ones that have announced already will continue announcing admissions over the next few weeks. So don't fret yet, especially with your great stats.
splic Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Thanks Linden! How I wish my admissions committees share your thoughts..
dagger Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Linden! I feel its been too long since your last post. What have you been up to?
policy_applicant Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 I had a nightmare last night that I got rejections from all my top choices and no funding from the (very expensive) schools I've been accepted to thus far. I woke up in the middle of the night and had to remind myself that it was just a dream. I'm really not cut out for this waiting.
orozconpollo Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 policy_applicant: no need to fret! you got into some good schools already so i'm sure you will hear back with more good news in the coming weeks. hmm so i got a call from a professor from one of the schools i was accepted at. she called to congratulate me and told me to call her back if i had questions about the program. but my phone has been acting weird and only last night did it pick up the voicemail or alert me to it. the call was from over a week ago. =/ i tried calling her back today but she didn't pick up so i just left a message. i just feel bad that i missed the call and only now got back to her! i hope she doesn't think i'm not interested in the program b/c i definitely am!! now i'm just keeping an eye out for her to return my call. sigh.
linden Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Hello to you too Dagger! I had been trying to wean myself off gradcafe, to no avail. Have you received any good news? Policy_applicant, like you I am fretting about funding now. (Ha, ha. I am impressed at how quickly I was able to refocus my anxiety!) I did see an interesting post on applyingtograd (livejournal) from an individual who is applying to MPA programs. "I got into one program in a city that is IDEAL for studying public policy and public administration. It's also ranked quite highly. They "regret" that they cannot offer me a fellowship." The poster later on confirmed that the school s/he is referring to is in DC. I thought it was interesting that s/he wrote that the school already confirmed the poster is not being offered a fellowship. It would thus seem that schools are already releasing funding information. I am not sure what program it is, and I might be making too many assumptions. But, this post makes me feel a bit hopeful; at least I have not yet been rejected from funding. I hope this will help you with your nightmares.
policy_applicant Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Policy_applicant, like you I am fretting about funding now. (Ha, ha. I am impressed at how quickly I was able to refocus my anxiety!) I know! I will find something to be a nervous wreck about until April 15, I'm sure. I wonder when we'll get official acceptance packages from the DC programs. I think people who are first in line to get funding will find out then and everyone else will have to wait for those people to turn the money down before they're offered anything. That's just my speculation, though.
orozconpollo Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 do people who have heard back earlier have a better shot at scholarship money? or maybe that's not a right assumption to make....?
policy_applicant Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 do people who have heard back earlier have a better shot at scholarship money? or maybe that's not a right assumption to make....? I sure hope so, but I think it also has to do with when the application was submitted.
