massive Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 I'll get back later with the exact wording - but it basically just said that they reviewed my file and determined i wasn't worthy, or whatever, of an assistance ship or aid. The paper did not mention that the university changed its policy with regard to giving out money this year.
udf65 Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Hi All... been lurking for a few days but decided to join in. I'm one of the others who got an unofficial acceptance email from GWU and GPPI on Feb. 4. Has anyone who got their email from GWU or GPPI on Feb. 4 heard about funding yet? At first I was excited because I thought hearing back so early might have meant some money was coming my way, but now it seems that was probably wishful thinking.
jonpkduq Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 hm did they explain why they didn't give you funding? how do they determine it? do you guys think it's mainly based on high stats (gre/gpa)? Yeah, I wish they were clearer about this. My anxiety is starting to shift toward funding since the schools I've heard from have said those determinations are made at a later date, but have not provided any kind of time frame. And I agree with udf65 re: early notice equaling aid...wishful thinking for sure.
ajithrkrishnan Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Hey, I just joined after lurking around quite a bit!! I havent had guys around me like you with good knowledge on admissions and merits of these schools. I am an international applicant with a Fulbright funding, a low GRE (Q 570, V 510, 5.5 AW) a good TOEFL (112/120) and with 5 years of work exp in rural development and international agricultural research. Looking at Climate change and food policies...ENV POLICY specialization. I have submitted applications to KSG and GSPP. Are there any chances for me to get through? Can anyone give me a reasonably realistic answer? By when can one expect GSPP and KSG decisions? (mid-March??). Thank you in advance.
linden Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 The GWU Trachtenberg School FAQ section had this information about merit aid. "How competitive is the Trachtenberg School in terms of funding? Trachtenberg School funding is quite competitive. For these merit-based awards we review the full application, not just the GRE scores and GPA. We consider your grades, statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation. Many students have some work experience, but it is not a requirement. Those who typically receive awards have GRE scores above the 80 th percentile, and a GPA of at least 3.8. But, these numbers are not absolute and depend on the qualifications of the other applicants for that year." Nevertheless, they have reformatted their FAQ, and that information is gone. Perhaps the criteria stated previously are no longer valid. I would have also thought that early admission translated into increased chances for aid. Presumably schools that do not have rolling admissions can compare all the candidates at once, and I would imagine they would be in a hurry to get acceptances out to the candidates they felt were the best fits. Massive, I also had a quick question. The GWU acceptance said that in a few weeks we would be able to see our admission information online. Are you able to see on applyyourself.com a copy of the letter that was sent to you? Thanks! Hang in there everybody!

Are you able to see on applyyourself.com a copy of the letter that was sent to you? Thanks! I can see mine (as of 2/9/09). It has a letter from the School of Arts and Sciences saying I have been admitted but does not mention anything about funding. I haven't received a hard copy of anything from them yet. Is that how yours is too?

udf65 Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 My applyyourself status still hasn't been updated. When did you get the admissions email, udf65? I got my email February 4. Just noticed the update yesterday on applyyourself, but it says 02/09/09.
Losky Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 wow !!! My first post really exited...but...you have great stats !!... wondering if I should have applied to more programs  Anyway good luck to us all !!!!
massive Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 My paper admission to GWU was mailed to me on Feb 3rd. I did not receive a fellowship or Assistantship - they phrased it as such: "Applications for... 2009-010 academic year have been reviewed and i regret to inform you that we are not able to offer you an award." The documents make no mention of scholarships or grants or loans or whatever other form financial aid may take. Massive, I also had a quick question. The GWU acceptance said that in a few weeks we would be able to see our admission information online. Are you able to see on applyyourself.com a copy of the letter that was sent to you? Thanks! Two or three days after Jan 28 my applyyourself changed. It now says under Submission Status "CCAS4-A decision on your application has been made." and a new line at the bottom of the page has appeared "Decision Status" which i can click to read an unofficial decision letter.
ebee Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Got my first acceptance e-mail this afternoon Now to wait for (hopefully!) two more!
policy_applicant Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 From where? I don't see it on the results list. Let me guess. It's the gopher. I believe it's on the results page.
ebee Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Let me guess. It's the gopher. I believe it's on the results page. Gopher is correct - University of Minnesota MPP.
ebee Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Congrats, ebee! Thanks! I saw on the results page there's another Minnesota MPP'er floating around somehere on the boards...
udf65 Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 For those who have received the "unofficial" admit email from GPPI, has your status on applyyourself changed yet? Mine still just says "submitted." I wonder when we can expect the official acceptance letter...

Mine still just says "submitted." I wonder when we can expect the official acceptance letter... Mine hasn't changed either. The email said we'd receive the official letter in 2-4 weeks, so I'm not expecting it until March 1. It sounds like some people (not me) have received their official letter from GW, but maybe they have a quicker turnaround than GPPI.

splic Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I got into UMD-College Park! They told me by e-mail today, and said I'd be getting the admission letter by post soon. It's not my first choice, but I'm still happy to get an acceptance! I have to give them a decision by April 15th, so that's pretty standard. I also got the funding details with the admission letter - my tuition's almost fully covered for the first year. The other expenses will still be too much for me to bear (I'm an international student), so I think I'm going to have to ask them to up it substantially if I do decide to take it. Yay!
linden Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Splic: Congrats! I also think you're among the first at gradcafe to get a generous offer.

Rutabaga Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 aaah, someone got rejected for the PhD at GWU! Still no status on mine... I guess that's a good thing!
younglions Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Congratulations to all those who have recently received positive decisions. Splic--please let us know how the whole asking for more money thing works out for you, if it comes to that. I'm real interested in hearing UMD's response. As for me, I still haven't heard squat. I'm waiting to hear from CMU MSPPM, Princeton MPA, Fletcher MALD, Chicago MPP, Georgetown MSFS, and Harvard MPP. I'm going to take a long weekend and head to Guanajuato tomorrow. Should be three beautiful days of minimal worrying and obsessive-compulsive refreshing.
younglions Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Just got an e-mail that prompted a jump up and down. I'm in at Fletcher MALD, scholarship details to follow in late March. For those who have also applied, the e-mail contained the following: "While the majority of our applicants will not be notified until late March, the Committee was so impressed with your credentials that we wanted to relay the good news as soon as possible... The Admissions Office will send you a large packet of enrollment information in late March. If you applied for scholarship aid from Fletcher, you will be notified of the decision on your scholarship application at that time." Hopefully this early admit translates into a nice scholarship offer. I really love the Fletcher program, and if they offer a big package, I'll have a hard time not accepting. Two years in Boston would be nice!
mags Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Congratulations on your admission to Fletcher! It must be nice to hear so early. I also love their program, it is one of my top choices. Lets hope that march brings good news!
