neuropsych76 Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 So i had an interview at school X, awhile ago. (mid March) and they said they'd let me know soon because the deadline was approaching. April 15th passed and I haven't heard anything despite multiple emails to the graduate director and assistant director. I already accepted another school but I'd be so angry if school X was where I wanted to go. At the interview, they probably dished out $500 on me during my stay. It seems a bit weird that they would blow all that money on an applicant and just never contact them again. I thought the interview went fine also. This might be common but I was just wondering if anyone had any similar experiences.
mbr484 Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I also had an interview at a school back in February and have not heard a word since them. Seeing as I was accepted at other places, including my top choice, not hearing back doesn't bother me too much. It is kind of odd though. So i had an interview at school X, awhile ago. Yeah, I guess we were lucky we had more preferable places to go. But still, i think it's not very professional. Oh well
singlecell Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I agree it is unprofessional. It happens to the schools too, according to one of the AdCom directors I spoke to. He said that they send offers of admission to folks and then never hear from them again. And that was a wait list school! I guess it goes both ways... Not that it is right.
Nuclear Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I thought I was the only person this happened to! I only applied to two schools....I got into my reach back in February, and received an interview at my safety. I visited both, and fortunately, fell in love with my reach school. I went and visited my safety school (heck, my plane flight was $500, so I can't even imagine how much they actually spent. Probably close to $1000 per visitor), and felt good about my interviews, but came to the conclusion it wasn't the school for me. But it didn't matter, I still have yet to hear back from them! I emailed 4 or 5 weeks ago, asking about when I would hear, and I was told they were in the midst of admissions. And yep. Nothing since then. A friend of mine, in the same department, applied and visited as well, and hasn't heard anything either. I'm upset; the least you could do was send me a rejection letter, so I can have peace of mind. It's a small field, and I know I would hate to burn my bridges....I'm just surprised the school doesn't share in my opinion.

So far, I have been accepted to one (my reach) with 1/2 tuition, found out last week I was accepted with funding for a late application, and the one I interviewed for (also a later date), lo and behold I have not heard back from. I keep looking on the boards and no one has claimed admission, but it is a really small field so it is likely that they just might not be on GradCafe. They also shelled out money on me, so it would be nice to hear back.... I am wondering if I should call and see if a letter got lost? I just want closure at this point...
Neuronista Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I've been interviewed by my "supposedly" safety school on April 1st. No word until I had to e-mail them yesterday. I got a quick reply (after a few hours) saying the committee is still deliberating! This is the last school I'm waiting on, and I've been rejected by all others already. I would really like to know their decision ASAP so that if it's a no, I'll want to start preparing for next year (searching for other schools, studying for and retaking the GRE, etc.) Good luck to all of you and congrats to those who've been admitted

I am at the point that I want to either know if its a yes or no, and not have to keep going in circles trying to find the information. It is almost like an arcane art for them to make the choice or something.

Neuronista Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 I have an interview scheduled tomorrow night. Because im an International Student, its gonna be over the phone. Bah, I dont know what they are gonna ask me about. Any suggestions on how I should approach it? I had 2 phone interviews. One interview was more like a friendly conversation: - Why did you choose this field. - Tell me about your research experience. - What are your strengths and weaknesses. - What are your hobbies? What do you do in your free time? - What is the last book you read? What is your favorite book? (because I answered the previous question saying I like to read) - What is the most important thing you look for in a schools you apply to? Another interview was more research-oriented: - What was your research about? (and lots of detailed questions about my MS project) - What techniques you already know and what are others that you would like to learn? - Would you like to do something closely related to your MS project for your PhD or you do prefer to take on something different? - Do you have any teaching experience? - What do you plan to do after you get your PhD? - What attracted you to our program? - Did you apply to other schools? Did you get any offers from other places yet? These are the questions I could remember for now. If I remember any more, I'll post them right away. Just relax and be yourself Good luck!
