I'll be visiting there late this month. So, we'll see!

I'm visiting later this month too. I'm pretty stoked but my wife doesn't like the idea of living in Tallahassee. She still has hopes for Austin;)

Austin would be nice (I almost applied to UT), but one thing to consider: Tallahassee is notably cheaper. The weather is still warm year 'round, and you're outside of the range of most hurricanes. And FL ST is a quality school.

Yeah I was looking at houses for sale on Craigslist and they were pretty cheap. I'm thinking of buying a fixer-upper and flipping it after grad school.

:) looks like this is where I'll be headed to for graduate school, in the field of physics.

Your username is ironic given mine. Browncoat, or just a coincidence?

I'm finishing my undergrad at FSU and still waiting on an admission decision for their Philosophy MA. As regards where to live off campus--stay away from most of the nearby apartment complexes if you are looking to avoid living with undergraduates. Obviously, the further from campus you go, the cheaper the rent. I could practically leap to campus & I pay less than $500/mo. Also, be sure to check about crime-rates in whichever area you plan on living-- some are notorious for theft, while others are almost free of all crime. I'm not sure how helpful this post is, but if you have any other questions about Tallahassee, let me know!

That does help. Are you familiar with the area that is the FSU graduate apartments?

I know there is grad student housing in Alumni Village, but it seems to be "dorm-style" apartments. The plus side of that is that its near campus and cheap! Otherwise, anywhere in the Downtown area (a bit more expensive), off Apalachee parkway, and Monroe street near the Governor's Square Mall or Lake Ella are safe bets for staying relatively near campus and out of the party-style quarters.

Thanks for the information! It's very helpful. I was looking at the graduate housing as well... thinking maybe just for the first semester until I get the know the area better. Philosophy, also a very interesting topic to pursue. Wish you the best of luck with being successful in that area.

Cool! I was a physics major at FSU for a few years. FSU has a really great department. Do you know who you will be working with yet?

Sounds good :). No I'm not sure who I will be working with yet, but I'm thinking about going into nuclear research. But there is plenty of time to decide, so we'll see.

The FSU Graduate apartments are called Alumni Village. They are very old (I believe they were dorms for people returning from WWII on the GI bill) and very poorly maintained. They are loud, small, have lots of bugs, and are in a high crime area. Also, they aren't actually that close to campus, they are at least a few miles away. They are relatively cheap because they are so crappy, and it is easy to get in there (no need for a credit check) and you don't need to visit first to reserve an appt, but I would advise against living there unless you really don't care about the quality of your apartment and the neighborhood. Actually, I would look anywhere north of Tennessee St to be on the safe side. Midtown is a nice, quiet neighborhood.

I agree. Alumni Village apartments are pretty crappy. If I were you, I'd try looking around online and see what's close to campus. That's how I found my place. Search around on places like Rent Jungle or something and I'm positive you'll find something better than those places.

Hi, I just moved to Tallahassee on August 20th and I really hate this place...does anyone feel the same as me? I don't know, I just find the people not to be as friendly here (as in Georgia for example). However, I love my program and I'm glad to be at FSU...I just wish it wasn't in Tallahassee.
