Check out the Critical Language Scholarship summer program. Fully funded and located in Korean. Also, look at University of Washington. hope that helps!

Hi Zephyr99,

I don't know where you are located but North Georgia (a military affiliated college) offers an intensive Summer Language Institute and it's not expensive. They offer Korean, Chinese, Russian and Arabic. I know someone from UNC who went there last summer and liked it.

Good Luck!

Thanks! I'm pretty excited about it. I work primarily in the postwar period. Are you a Japanese literature person as well?

I am a Japanese lit person, yes. We are working in the same period, so (unfortunately) I can more or less toss Chicago out the window. Either way, UPenn and Chicago in one week is something to be very proud of. Congrats again!

I don't know mewiiwate, I still think it's way too early for anyone to feel like they're cut out of programs. Chicago has a such a significant modern Japanese literature presence, I wouldn't be surprised if they admitted a few of us modern kids. Plus, recruitment weekend isn't for another month, so don't give up! 頑張れ!

Hi everyone, i see one post showing there is already news from Harvard's Asian studies phd program. Anyone who got admitted minds sharing his/her background here?

Plus, does receiving no email today mean a rejection already? Since as i know they tend to send out rejections through postal service...

I posted the Harvard admit--I work in postwar Japanese literature. In terms of background, I am finishing a JD/MA, and I went to IUC for a year--nothing tremendously exciting. It looks like last year that Harvard was accepting people way after the beginnng of February, so I don't think not receiving an email today is any indication of a rejection. Best of luck!

As a current Harvard PhD student, let me congratulate you. For everyone else, as I recall (and as the results survey seems to confirm), all acceptances to the PhD came out at once last year, so if you didn't hear yet, you probably didn't get in. I know that sucks to hear, but I'm sure you all have great applications that will get you other acceptances (I certainly didn't get in everywhere I replied)

Thanks pudewen! How are you liking your time at Harvard? Hopefully I will get to meet you at the prospective student weekend!

I just checked the results page again, and it does seem that acceptances went out on more than just one day. Obviously you would know better than I would, but that seems to suggest there is still a chance... Anyway, I should probably finish this MA thesis sometime this year--I hope everybody has a good night and lots of good news next week.

Has anyone heard anything from the EALAC department at Columbia or the Asian Studies department at Princeton (PhD app)? Their websites merely mention that results are given "by March," but from current students at Columbia I have heard that informal acceptances are made via phone calls as early as February. I'm currently a MARSEA student at Columbia.

I'm doing an interview at Princeton on Tuesday (invitation came out mid-January), so hopefully I will know more once that is over!

I am also wondering what's going on at Columbia, but I guess it's still early...

Columbia Ealac will send an email or make a phone call to those accepted applicants around 15th of this month,

and for those who haven't got any email or phone call, the reject mail will come about a month later.

Does anyone know of any good programs for Fall 2012 that have rolling admissions? I only applied to two schools and UChicago was a no-go so I'm freaking out a bit.

Thanks ifindalex. I'm looking to go into Korean literature but there don't seem to be too many programs that focus on that...

BTW for anybody who applied to UCLA, I just called the department today and the committee is still reviewing apps. The admissions counselor said that they will probably let people know by the end of this week or the beginning of the next.

still could not find a second offer from harvard's ealc phd program...anyone else got news from there? starting to wonder whether some decisions are not yet released:)

Ok. I am officially TIRED of WAITING to hear the results! It's hard to wait for other people to decided upon your future!

Guess I just need to distract myself with school and the start of the new semester....

Hi guys!

I'm applying for a MA in Southeast Asian studies. Southeast Asia doesn't seem like a popular region, which makes my choices extremely limited >.< But my top choice would be the UofHawaii at Manoa and I'm planning on applying for a MA at UWash and UW-Madison as well.

It's funny how life turns out though. I entered undergrad thinking I would major in East Asian politics, signed up for two years of school in Japan, but here I am now totally obsessed over Southeast Asia!

Good luck everybody!

HI! I just applied to the MA Asian Studies Program, concentration in Southeast Asian Studies at Cornell U. Now I am waiting...I also found that there are not many universities that offer a concentration in SEA or have center of SEA. :( It is a fascinating region!! Anyways, the schools that have MA programs or concentration in this region are: Cornell, U. Of Mich, U. Of Wis-Madison, U. Washington, Northern Illinois, Ohio, U. of Hawaii - Manoa, U. of CA - Berkeley and LA. This unpopular region could be help us out in the application process :).

What countries/languages/religion are you focusing on?

Good Luck to you!

Has anyone heard anything out of Stanford? I haven't found anything on the results board, but thought it may be possible that people have had informal talks with professors there.

Also, if you were on a visit after you were admitted to a school, what are some questions that you would absolutely ask, regardless of the program/professor? Here are some of mine:

What percentage of admitted students go on to finish a PhD (either at that school, or elsewhere)?

What percentage find tenure-track positions after graduating?

How does the department handle summer funding?

Does the school have a formal exchange with any major universities abroad?

Is study abroad encouraged? Where? For language acquisition or research?

How does study abroad affect funding?

What classes do graduate students TA and how much of the lesson planning/teaching are they responsible for?

What funding is available for conferences and presentations?

I would love to hear other questions people find important!
