Guimauvaise Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Hey all, I just wanted to start this thread to see if I'm a rarity. For all three of my degrees (BA, MFA, and incoming PhD), I applied to only one school and was accepted. I'm PhD at the same school as my MFA, but still. Is there anyone else on the forums who only applied to one school? For my BA, Lyon College was the only school I wanted to attend. I can't explain why, but it was an instant fit. As for grad school, I applied to the uni in my hometown. For the MFA, only five people in my emphasis (poetry) are accepted each year. As for the PhD, the English dept. is the largest in the school, so it wasn't anywhere near as competitive, but I did manage to get a fellowship. So who else out there had success applying to only one school per degree? Anyone?
ktel Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 I only applied to 2 schools (3 different programs), which seems to be a lower number than some of the people on this forum. After a few meetings with some of the professors and/or graduate advisors I had no doubt I would be accepted. Not to sound arrogant, but I only applied to 3 programs to keep my options open, not because I didn't think I would get in. I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to study or who with.
laviola Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 For my BA I applied to 2 schools and got into both, with a scholarship in both. My mistake was turning the one with a higher scholarship down for one with more 'prestige' (which is a load of crap, the other school was better for my interests). For my MA I'm definitely applying to several though.
sacklunch Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 One application to rule them all.... violet., Safferz, Guimauvaise and 1 other 4
Eigen Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 I did 2/2 for undergrad, and then 3/3 for grad school. I was still a bit undecided as to the exact area I wanted to work in for graduate school, so I applied to 3 schools with 3 slightly different areas, and then was able to choose between them.
Mal83 Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 After getting an associates at a community college I only applied to one school as a transfer student and got in. I applied to 3 schools for an MA, got into one first round, got into the second from the waitlist, and was rejected by the third. I had limited myself to the DC area so there weren't a ton of options anyway. I was very worried about it, but it certainly worked out for the best.
Zencarrot Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 I only applied to one school for my Master's and got in, but I applied to about 6 different schools for my PhD and got in to four of them. At the time I was applying for my Master's I was a bit rushed and had actually planned on applying a year later so I only squeezed out one application.
Guimauvaise Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person who "risked it" by applying to only one or two schools. I'm also glad to see that you all were accepted byt he school (I assume) you wanted.
Triple Tall Cappuccino Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 Wow, now I feel like an idiot applying to 8... LOL. My obsessive/pessimist side won't let me apply to one. But congrats to you!!!
