I got accepted into Georgetown as well, and will be attending it. It's one of the top schools for applied linguistics, and 2 great professors from Hawaii will be teaching this semester there (big names in SLA). However, it really depends on you: 1. Which school offers you a better package? 2. Which school has faculty that match your prospective thesis better? 3. Which school is closer to home/friends/family (if you are expecting to travel back and forth)? 4. Which school has the better program in regards to the specific field you want to study? 5. Which city is better for living (how will you be supporting yourself? Will you be able to afford housing, etc)? All of these are questions which need to be addressed by you in order to make your decision. I can sit here and gloat about Georgetown, but that is because it's best for MY needs. It might not be the same for you, and I believe I saw in another thread that you were 99% sure about Columbia nonetheless, correct? Good luck!

Hi! Congrats to both of you on your admissions! I'll be attending Georgetown (Spanish and Portuguese linguistics Ph.D.)! This was my number one school, so while I was apprehensive about which program I was going to choose initially (thinking I didn't have a chance with Georgetown), as soon as they called to inform me of my acceptance and funding, it was a clear, easy, and instant decision. I accepted it in February.

Haha, true. Be that as it may, as long as the rest of your application is "strong" enough to counter not having publications, I think it's fine. I believe having an idea for a major project or what you want to work on (or a strong paper that could be published in the near future) is just as great.

@antecedant: I was told that it was imperative to try to publish/be in the process of publishing and at least have presented at one conference. However, I'm sure that if the rest of your application is perfect, it won't matter.

@100: I lived in College Park, MD last summer for my internship in Tenleytown (which was a faaaaar commute, but dirt cheap). However, this time around, I am definitely looking closer. In Arlington, I've found excellent apartments in the 1600-2000 price range, however, they're new and near the metro (which is a MAJOR factor for us, as we will only be taking one car). Also, our priorities are slightly different, as we're looking for 2/2s . We've also found very nice apartments near Dupont Circle (a pretty affluent neighborhood) and some near the Waterfront by the Capitol. I've mostly checked rent.com and craigslist (for an idea) and made a Google Docs spread sheet, citing prices, websites, square footage, nearest metro, and I then give it my own rating of 1-5. SO, by the time we visit DC (May), we already have a list to look at prior to settling (most apartments allow you to reserve the room through their site). Hope this helps! Me! I will be doing SLA/Applied Linguistics, particularly Spanish and heritage speakers. There are some GREAT professors of SLA in Georgetown, Carnegie Mellon, UIUC, and UMD. I know UHawaii also has an excellent program. My mentor from my MA graduated from Georgetown Spanish Linguistics (where I will be attending) with SLA and she loved it. What are you interested in doing, exactly? I am also very interested in conducting research with task-based teaching/learning and conversational interactions (I'm presenting my paper on precisely that this weekend in Boston at the AAAL). We're looking at Arlington and the main DC area. Thankfully, since I am moving with my husband (he's an engineer) we can live comfortably with his salary and my stipend. But yeah, it's pretty expensive. Although Miami is just as pricey.

What exactly do you need? I, like fuzzy, am not a phonologist, but I did some work on it!

Congrats on your acceptance/funding option, though! As tough as it is, continue to perceive it all on the positive! Sorry I haven't been around as much, but now my anxiety has turned from admissions to finding a place to live in DC! LOL

I use Macs! Ever since I bought my Pro a few years ago, I can't use any other system. However, for taking notes in class, and interviews/transcriptions, I use the Livescribe pen. I believe no grad student should go to school without one!
