crazedandinfused Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 It's just really unsettling how racist rhetoric has transmuted into this passive-aggressive, supposedly "neutral" language. I know that the self-conception of white people as "oppressors-now-oppressed" dates back at least as far as Reconstruction and the idea of "negro rule," but the fact that this educated lady was able to couch what is indisputably racist sentiment in what she would consider to be thoroughly innocuous language really makes me pessimistic about the future of this country - especially as we get closer to the point where whites are a minority. Thank god I don't live in Arizona. Now, to try to bring this back to apps: I was meandering around PHDS.org last night looking at job outcomes for various departments, and it was really striking how many of them have a 55-45 split between people employed within the US and people employed without. Maybe the job market isn't as bad if we are willing to live abroad? After that woman, I'm totally enthusiastic about such a possibility. Addendum: I should say that she was a very nice lady. She probably doesn't have any conscious hatred of the racial Other and I think that my story says more about the culture we live in than it does about the character of that woman.
uhohlemonster Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 HAHA thanks for that, crazedandinfused. I get it now.
oswic Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I was accepted to The Graduate Center, CUNY! I am so excited! The POI there was my top choice!
uhohlemonster Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Hey, question, did you see if your status changed on the website anywhere?

oswic Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Thanks, everyone! Hey, question, did you see if your status changed on the website anywhere? There isn't any indication on the website. Sorry, uhohlemonster. I wish I had more information for you. Hang in there!
Nordicllama Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Has anyone else not yet heard from Ohio State? I checked the Graduate School Admission's "check status" tab but it just says "in review."
Tigalily Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Has anyone else not yet heard from Ohio State? I checked the Graduate School Admission's "check status" tab but it just says "in review." I still haven't heard anything and my status has said "in review" for months now.
TMP Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Re: OSU. Give it until March 15th before calling it quits.
Tigalily Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Re: OSU. Give it until March 15th before calling it quits. Thanks. The days can't go by fast enough at this point.
bjett003 Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 WIll the person who got the Emory rejection PM me and let me know about it...I am curious to know more about any details.
sandyvanb Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Has anyone else not yet heard from Ohio State? I checked the Graduate School Admission's "check status" tab but it just says "in review." Ditto here. Will whoever got the Georgetown decline PM me? I went to the website and I don't see anything...
uhohlemonster Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Similarly, whoever got the decline from UCLA could you PM me? I'm wondering if it's a generic email or something you heard from a POI...
lureynol Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Ditto here. Will whoever got the Georgetown decline PM me? I went to the website and I don't see anything... Last year my Georgetown rejection came via post.
Kelkel Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Boston College and Binghamton adcoms, can you please PM the results of my recent application to your programs? I checked the websites and nothing has changed. I'm wondering if I'll get to go to your programs this fall... I'm not making fun, I promise.
sandyvanb Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Last year my Georgetown rejection came via post. Thanks for the info! There is a recent update that said that they were rejected via the website...
Kelkel Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Thanks for the info! There is a recent update that said that they were rejected via the website... Yeah mine was post as well. I think the website updated a couple of weeks later.
crazedandinfused Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Would anyone like to claim the Umass admit? Please? I'm starting to get progressively more freaked out as the programs I applied to begin to notify and all I get from my email is a cold, blank stare.......
uhohlemonster Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 me too, crazed. me too. and this forum is so quiet right now.
Nordicllama Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Would anyone like to claim the Umass admit? Please? I'm starting to get progressively more freaked out as the programs I applied to begin to notify and all I get from my email is a cold, blank stare....... I've still got 10 cold, blank stares. It's not over until the final letter comes. Chin up! There's still lots of time. My adviser was very surprised by how early everything is happening this year and the DGS here thought the schools were only notifying their very top choices in hopes of landing them before the Harvards and Yales could steal them away.
crazedandinfused Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 You guys are the best. I was literally on my porch today angrily crumpling up a handful of Target and Rite Aid circulars, wailing "why, why whyyyyyyyyyy???" I must remember to laugh at myself.
