lordvader Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Lordvader: What is your subfield? I saw someone just gave up a UMN funded offer for Theory and I am wondering if UMN admits by subfield? Any ideas? Thanks! I was rejected (comparative politics), but I have other good offers. Thanks guys for the good wishes.
spottydog Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Happy you have other offers. Thanks for the info.

CooCooCachoo Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Does anyone have any clue how long the GWU waitlist is? A few people here have already indicated that they have declined their offer, and I am very likely to do so myself. With so little funding available they must either have a huge waitlist or may be fishing from the rejectee pond.

shavasana Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 But... but... Will Reno! Hendrik Spruyt! Okay, in all fairness I am just jealous because I got a stone-cold rejection from Northwestern. Best of luck with your future studies! I hope you get into your dream school after re-applying. I'm just agreeing. Hendrik is awesome. ...and Will Reno is so much cooler than I could ever hope to be. [Doesn't hurt that these guys are also incredibly available and helpful.]
RWBG Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I am relatively sure that NYU is done, although there was one relatively late admit from this board, so you never know. They made a huge round of rejections and admissions, maybe anybody who hasn't heard is unofficial wait list? I'm not sure. Thanks Megan I called them as soon as I read your message but the guy told me I should be expecting an email by next week well he said no decision has been made yet. I guess I might have been rejected or they are waiting on someone to decline their offer??? Can you tell me your stats? I might have to reapply next year Well, I also haven't heard from NYU. I tried sending an e-mail, and got the whole "decision process is ongoing" spiel. Last year, I remember rejections went out later for people who were being considered for the MA program; I don't remember indicating that I was interested in the MA program, but it's possible I ticked a box somewhere. Do you remember if you did?

They are really good and in fact, they were really helpful and honest when I visited NU and talked to them. Hendrik and the Hurds might have work somewhat in the same ballpark as mine as well, but overall the main problem was the lack of a fit. I don't think the departments interests and mine fit well together. There is also the problem of them having no experts in the region I'm interested in. Adblache, I know you speak highly of NU and I have no doubt it is a good school, but fit and future career plans matter a lot. Out of curiosity, I note you yourself haven't applied to NU according to your list of schools. Is there any reason you'd like to share with us?
CairoKid Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Only one PhD program left to hear from, followed by what I expect to be several unfunded MA offers (or perhaps rejections). Let's hear it for Fulbright!!! (my only hope) Now, if only I didn't have to wait until May/June to find out.

While I am obviously not adblanche, I can think of several reasons to not apply to one's alma mater, no matter how much a student loves it. "Academic inbreeding" is an issue. It can raise some red flags when you apply for jobs if you get all of your degrees from one institution. It can signify an unwillingness or inability to challenge yourself, although there are some exceptions. Another thing to consider is that some high-achieving students might have taken several graduate-level courses, at might need a change of intellectual scenery/the school might not have too much more to offer a student. I wouldn't necessarily suspect that there is something wrong with a department simply because an undergraduate there does not apply to the graduate program. Just my humble opinion, take it fwiw. Rumor mill (the Commission) in Ankara said they're expanding the program by 20 spots. GOOD LUCK!
dufromage Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Just got rejected to McGill...Feels bad man johnehm, i'm sorry to hear that did you apply for the PhD? or MA?
Ironheel!! Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Anyone else still waiting on schools?? I've yet to hear from Brown and Temple.
CafeAuLait12 Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Anyone else still waiting on schools?? I've yet to hear from Brown and Temple. Still waiting on Georgetown, Boston College, and Boston University, but I will likely turn them down if I get into them for a variety of reasons. Still would be nice to be out of limbo though.
nofear212 Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Long time lurker here, and I apologize in advance for going a little off topic. I've been extremely anxious these past few days and I decided to take advantage of this forums pool of knowledge. I have been in contact with the professor in charge of the graduate program at my number 1 choice for a Phd in political science. On Feb 27th he told me that while he couldn't say anything official he was planning on recommending me for admission and full support to the graduate office. He said the grad office usually takes 2-3 days to turn it around and there are "a few more steps" after that. He said that ""hopefully if all goes will you should hear something official by the end of the week." That was this past Friday. Now I know I'm probably overreacting and I should just shut up and chill out but Its been extremely hard to do so. But I can't help myself... Should I be worrying? At what point do I need to contact the professor? Any advice would be greatly appreciated . Congrats to all those who got into their programs this cycle!
KremlinGremlin Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Anyone else still waiting on schools?? I've yet to hear from Brown and Temple. I'm still waiting on Brown. Someone mentioned that all admits had been contacted directly. Not sure if this is true, but I'm taking it as a bad sign. Luckily, I have some options.
CairoKid Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Pulling for you! Rumor mill (the Commission) in Ankara said they're expanding the program by 20 spots. GOOD LUCK! Thanks! And that's excellent! And very surprising considering their funding issues last year. I wish I knew how many people applied and how many they narrowed the pool down too after the first cut. P.S. I PMed you asking a few more questions. =)
johnnehm Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 johnehm, i'm sorry to hear that did you apply for the PhD? or MA? PhD. Got my MA from UofWindsor
Anonymouse Bosch Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Got on the waiting list for University of Toronto for political theory. Yaay! potbellypete and TicToc. 2

I would say that there's not much you can do, and emailing the professor is probably going to do more harm than good at this point. If you still haven't heard by early next week, maybe you can shoot him a line politely asking if he has any updates on when decisions will be made, but I would personally avoid it.
puddle Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Got on the waiting list for University of Toronto for political theory. Yaay! I'm not sure how the wait list works at UofT but if it is general (i.e. not sub-divided by field), a spot is going to open up in the program in a few days. I hope you or another Grad Cafe-er gets it! TicToc. Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Got on the waiting list for University of Toronto for political theory. Yaay! Congrats. UToronto is really great. Toronto's better than any American program if you plan on working in Canada. Anonymouse Bosch and TicToc. 2

I more or less agree. And since Adblanche and I are both in the same subfield with similar regional interests, I can see why NU doesn't work for either of us. I guess, I'm just trying to say in many ways that there's nothing wrong with NU, it seems great, its just a department fit that might be an issue.
