ivyreject Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I'm still waiting to hear from some places, but I'm out at my reach school and in at the two best departmental matches for my interests. Problem is... funding. All I can do is hope that a lot of people who Georgetown offered funding will decide to go to better places. Still waiting on GW and a few other schools... And anticipating the thin envelope from BU any time. Hope all is well with everyone today.
fenderpete Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Got my rejection letter from Chicago today. Just Princeton to go now.
seraphita Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Does anyone know what's going on with Notre Dame? I browsed this thread all the way back to page 150, and found out that some people were accepted by ND back in February. So I figured they were done accepting people. When I finally got a rejection email last week, I wasn't surprised. But then I got an email saying that the rejection was an error, and that my application was still under consideration. (I think this also happened to someone else on this board). How could my app still be "under consideration", if they've already sent out all their offers? Since they already appear to have sent out acceptances AND waitlists AND rejections, I'm just a bit confused as to why I've gotten no response so far. I must fall into one of those three categories, so why don't they just go ahead and inform me of it?

seraphita Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Thanks for the response. Your profile says that you're waiting on ND too. Did you get officially waitlisted, or are you stuck in limbo, like me? I sent an email to someone in the department, so I'll let you know if I hear anything . . . but I think they might be on spring break right now, so the response could take a while.
hotep Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Columbia expects to finish notifying applicants this week. No indication of whether they are through with rejections... they notified wait lists right around the same time last year, too. hmm...though as we all know, correlation is not causation.
rlayla Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 official rejection from MIT came in the mail today. what a terse letter!

I was one of the ones who got the "you're rejected" then 10 minutes later the "oops, jk" email. In response to my query, they responded that I was still being considered and that they hoped to have decisions made by April 15th.
seraphita Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I was one of the ones who got the "you're rejected" then 10 minutes later the "oops, jk" email. In response to my query, they responded that I was still being considered and that they hoped to have decisions made by April 15th. Ah, I see. But why don't they just tell us that we're waitlisted? April 15th is the deadline for their first round of applicants to accept or reject the offer . . . so by telling us that *we* won't know until the 15th, they're basically saying that we're sitting on the backburner, waiting for their first-choice candidates to say no so we can get a spot. So, waitlisted. But, again . . . WHY NOT JUST TELL US THAT? Why not just send out emails letting us know where we're ranked on the waitlist, what the historic chances of getting accepted off the waitlist are, whether we can improve our chances by sending updated transcripts/materials, etc.? That way, we would have more information and could make a better decision about whether to say yes to another school's offer. Sorry, didn't mean to yell at you . . . I'm just so frustrated by ND right now, and really confused as to what their motives could be for NOT sending WL emails to certain people, since I'm pretty sure some applicants DID get the WL email. Are the candidates who got the email the top-ranked WLers?
GreatMix Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I'm trying to decide when it would be polite to start rejecting offers from schools I'm definitely not going to go to. How long from when you get an offer would be polite? Or on what date would it be reasonable to reject most of them? I don't want to insult any of the professors I've enjoyed meeting or had extensive dealings with, but on the otherhand, I don't want to hold up a spot someone else might be waiting for.
procrastinatrice Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 It saddens me to see that less and less people seem to post now that most schools have notified. I got to used to wasting a lot of time on this board and will miss it once high season is completely over.
adaptations Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 There certainly seems to be allot less to post about these days. I am sure some people will report back on impressions about visiting weekends and funding issues, but now that people are narrowing their choices, there is allot less general comments and speculation that is relevant to all. I will say, I am eagerly awaiting OSUs funding details along with a few other schools, but other than that, the drama, suspense, and excitement of the application process has died down - that must mean it is time to finish the paper I am working on. Ciao,

I think if you decline politely and express your respect for the department, which I have no doubt that you will anyway, I think it is best to decline ASAP --if you know for sure that you aren't going to go. I had informally told UMass-Amherst that I would most likely accept another offer as much as I loved UMass. They asked me to tell them as soon as I was absolutely certain since other students are waiting for funding. So I just officially turned down the offer. I think it makes most schools jobs a lot easier. Not to mention those of the applicants who are waiting for admission or funding...

GreatMix, I think the sooner, the better. The sooner you give notice to the school, the sooner they can get a clearer picture of their incoming class and extend offers to others. I'm sure they want the process to be over almost as much as we do. I think it's impolite to both the department and any waitlisted applicants to delay giving an answer if you've already made up your mind. All the politeness necessary to mollify the department's hurt feelings can be included in your email
polisci09 Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 As far as declining offers go--who do you guys contact--DGS? Department secretary? Email or send a letter?
procrastinatrice Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 As far as declining offers go--who do you guys contact--DGS? Department secretary? Email or send a letter? I think most schools prefer you to contact the DGS. E-mail seems to be perfectly acceptable, but I guess some schools send a card that should be returned.
cjh19 Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 As far as declining offers go--who do you guys contact--DGS? Department secretary? Email or send a letter? I would also probably go with the DGS unless they specifically ask for something else. By the way, congratulations on your extremely successful application cycle--I can't even imagine what it's like not to feel the sting of a rejection. Feel free to PM me if you're considering Pittsburgh--I did my undergrad there and I'd be happy to talk it up.
AllFiredUp Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Still all quiet today from those who haven't heard yet from Columbia? Wait-lists went out one year ago tomorrow...
hotep Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Still all quiet today from those who haven't heard yet from Columbia? Wait-lists went out one year ago tomorrow... and according to the results page, 2 years ago, a second round of rejections went out right around now. so...who knows wtf is going on! do we know if any waitlist offers went out yet this year?
fsmn36 Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Just got accepted by Missouri via email. No word on funding, but at this point I'm just so relieved at getting in somewhere. I'd about given up hope.

Such a glass-half-empty outlook. The fact that no discernable wait lists have been distributed yet is comforting. But the sheer number of people who haven't heard bodes ill. More "beheadings" will occur this week.

joelpolisci Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Just got accepted from Missouri via email. No word on funding, but at this point I'm just so relieved at getting in somewhere. I'd about given up hope. Hey, me too! I wrote to the Grad Assistant to ask when they'll know about funding. What's your sub-area? Edit: Nevermind, I just answered my own question.
seraphita Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 To anyone who is still waiting for a response from ND, here's an explanation of my own situation from the DGS. "We have a very short list of officially wait-listed candidates . . . as well as another list of excellent applicants who could move on to the wait list immediately if others withdraw from consideration. You are currently at the very top of the second list, and so not formally wait-listed but still under serious consideration: you are an excellent candidate and we would be happy to extend you an offer if we had the resources to do so. . . If we are able to add you officially to the waiting list, I will e-mail you at once to let you know." So, in other words, there's a waitlist to get onto the waitlist.
