t_ruth Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 for nights like this when everyone seems to be on. Board mods, think it is something you maybe could hook up?
anythingtwice Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Try here, it's free and pretty easy to use: http://www.chatzy.com/
t_ruth Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 yes, I've used chatzy before, but the mods could set something up on here linking to a gradcafe room...
bgk Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I'll think about it guys. I know there's a place for real time communication, but I'm not convinced yet. Mainly because there'd be no archive!
timuralp Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 +1 wait, what? you could log the conversations, easily. The real question is how difficult searching it would be, but then again, I feel a lot of questions end up being reiterated anyway, so you could include a bot to answer those
t_ruth Posted January 30, 2009 Author Posted January 30, 2009 people would still use the forums I think, but it would just be a place for us to bang our heads together (instead of against a wall) every once a while.
t_ruth Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 Hey, I created a room (hope that's ok) if anyone wants to chat in the meantime: http://www.chatzy.com/561893647675
cardnav Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 chatzy is having issues. It's not our chatroom, but all on their service that aren't working.
plisar Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Wow, that's pretty sad. We should just go on IRC.
t_ruth Posted February 3, 2009 Author Posted February 3, 2009 see, that's why we need a chat room here. chatzy is pretty unreliable, but that's what you get for free.
IvyHope Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Well. And all this time I thought I was missing out by having a cable outage! Whew. t_ruth, have you heard anything from Duke? I noticed a psych post on the results page yesterday.
t_ruth Posted February 3, 2009 Author Posted February 3, 2009 t_ruth, have you heard anything from Duke? I noticed a psych post on the results page yesterday. Nope. I believe that posting was cognitive and I'd be developmental...I guess they will be deciding on whether they are going to do a second round of interviews this week? I've sadly given up on them
IvyHope Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Probably best...you might be surprised, but you've already got a couple great offers. They aren't ranked as highly as some of the others, if I remember correctly...
timuralp Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Ok, well, I made a #gradschool channel on freenode... people should join it
t_ruth Posted February 3, 2009 Author Posted February 3, 2009 I went on, but it was dead... hopefully chatzy will get back online eventually.
timuralp Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 yea, i suppose it was. well, i idle there, i.e. do other work while it's open. If you want my attention, say timur and the thing will catch my eye
guenevere01 Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Ummm, a little help for us Humanities types? What is freenode, how do I get on, etc?? I've been to the freenode.net site but can't make heads or tails of it!
t_ruth Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 What I did was download mIRC (I have a windows machine) - you can google that and download it free. Then I just installed that, signed in and found freenode in the little folders and typed in #gradschool in the box that pops up. Once you get mIRC it should be pretty easy to follow. It certainly isn't as convenient or feature-rich as chatzy though. Darn you chatzy, why do you go down!
timuralp Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 actually, it has most other things you're used to, but you'd have to figure out the text commands to do that. Eh, I don't know, I like IRC And freenode is an IRC server. On each IRC server you have a number of channels (think chat rooms). I made one #gradschool (all the channel names are #). I've been to the freenode.net site but can't make heads or tails of it! you need an IRC client, like mIRC and a bunch of others too. What's your operating system (e.g. windows, OS X, Linux, etc)?
guenevere01 Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Windows (I'm too tech-stupid not to be a sheep, I know you techhies look down on us Windows-ites!). I used to have IRC, when I dated a computer engineer many moons ago...
