Wow I never thought when I first made this group that it would get to be this long!

I can't believe it is taking SSHRC this long to get the MA results out. Almost an entire month ago a prof that accepted me told me that while she was at SSHRC they told her the MA awards had already been decided! Why are they delaying sending them out???

Wow, this is so bad, and so tiring. I have definitely not hinged my WHOLE life on money that may or may not be awarded to me, but I made plans for a summer exchange program that I THOUGHT I would have time to accept or not, based on money coming in... Now, we start classes May 11th, with fees due, and they're saying that we may not even have a CLUE until that week? Holy crap, my fellow grads, this is heartrending!

I wonder what IS going on there...I mean, late is one thing, but this is really ridiculous. Perhaps they're trying to raise the cash to give us ALL money? Hey, hey? You think?

*weeps quietly into comps notes*

[More importantly, as thepoorstockinger pointed out, SSHRC couldn't just request transcripts without us giving explicit permission for them to do so.

Ah, right-o. For some reason I thought we signed our lives over to them and they were allowed access to that information through the university whenever they wanted. Guess this whole shenanigan is obscuring my ability to think coherently. Damn you SSHRC!

So judging from the posts, the holdup is because of a "new system" for the docs and post-docs? I really don't know what to believe anymore. First it was "near the end of April" now its "late next week" which means mid-May... it can't be that much longer can it? I feel like mid-may will become "near the end of May" and "near the end of May" will become "late in the first week of June" ad infinitum.

My impression is that these new dates that have been given: May 4/5 for masters and May 11/12 for doctoral (through your university's division of graduate studies) are the final dates. All the other dates we've gotten is when one of us emailed/called SSHRC. That email allegedly came from SSHRC and was sent to all Canadian universities. I don't think they'd take it upon themselves to send out such a mass email if the dates were only tentative.

As I've said earlier, I think the hold-up has to do with the Vanier awards. Since this is the first year, I'm sure there was a lot of scrambling re: how to distribute them. I also have a sense, again from that email natalia posted, that the SSHRC admin staff got involved in the Vanier award distribution and perhaps even the planning of that announcement/event that went down in Ottawa last Thursday. All of this is to say that I think that the reason we're waiting is because the staff that normally deals with all of the administrative/paperwork side of things for the SSHRC fellowship competition was busy with other things for a few weeks, delaying the whole show.

I suppose we'll know if they stick to the dates by tomorrow or Tuesday....Master's applicants, please please post as soon as you know!

What I find remarkable is the number of people who signed up for the board just to ask questions in this thread. It's like this message board thread is the main source of information on CGS awards... which probably just shows the absolute and total failure to communicate by SSHRC.

I find this thread to be much more informative than my dept. or Sshrc, so yes...in a sad sad way, this is the best line of information. Hope for future generations?

Yep. I'm one of them. I stumbled across this website when I was googling SSHRC, and so far this thread has proven to be the best source of information about SSHRC. The stats chart that Natalia posted for 2009 for example. I told the FGS at my school that the stats were out and they were absolutely astonished and asked me where I got them from, and I told them they were posted on the grad cafe website.

Anyhow has anyone contacted their universities today to try and find out the results? I asked someone at FGS to email me as soon as they know and still no email

I HATE this waiting game.

I just found out from my Graduate coordinator today that the delay in SSHRC results is not only frustrating for those of us who are anticipating the results---apparently my department relies on the results to determine our travel grants and our taships/instructorships/raships. With the delay on SSHRC's part, this means there's a delay in my department's part. I'm leaving for a 4 week research trip next month and have no idea if I will get a travel grant, have no clue if I'll have a job in September. Aarrgh.

And what is with SSHRC's fondness with Canada Post? Why can't we (1) check the status online a la OGS or (2) have the results sent by mail?

Seriously. I really don't understand why we have to get the results through the mail. Is there any good reason for it? Obviously there is some "secure site" that the faculty have access to--why don't they have a secure site for students to check their status on?

Perhaps the SSHRC people actually enjoy making us wait... at this point, I wouldn't put it past them!

Has anyone tried contacting SSHRC as of late? I bet if you emailed them now they would say the results won't be released until the end of May or something ridiculous. I am starting to wonder if we are even going to hear this summer. Jeez

I'm also confused about the Canada Post thing. In this day and age of environmental consciousness, you'd think they would WANT to save the paper! We had our secure and passworded application area, just plug it in there! I received my "Thank you we received your application" notification by email.

And I agree...if one were to contact SSHRC today, what date would they give us? Hmmm...anyone up to the experiment?

I just got an email from the graduate co-oridinator at my Department. MY APPLICATION WAS SUCCESSFUL!! yay!!!!

I'm guessing most FGS should have the results by now! Good luck to all!!!!

Congrats!

Now we will all fan out and harass the low-level administrators in our departments and faculties of graduate studies.

This is the MA competition, right? Just wondering if I should start getting my hopes up for the PhD one...

Dood's program says MA history, so I don't think us doctoral folks should get our hopes up for today. HOWEVER, it does seem like they are sticking to their schedule that natalia posted, so we should find out next Monday/Tuesday from our own faculties of graduate studies.

Yippee for some finality and congrats to all the master's folks who "win" a SSHRC!

Here's hoping for good news for all of the Master's students on this forum.

I completely agree! I received all of my application "stage" processes through email (department, faculty of graduate studies, sshrc), so why can't sshrc just send out an email as well?

Someone told me its a privacy concern. But I guess you can rebutt that statement and say a passworded application is private as well. I mean what happens---gforbid--that my results get "lost in the mail?"

And congrats to the MAs who win! I hope my sister does too!
