Waiting to hear back - MFA in Photography

Hello all! this is my introduction. My name is Laura.

I have only applied to three schools: RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology), SVA (School of Visual Arts), and ICP-Bard (International Center of Photography and Bard). My main priority is to stay in New York City (I did my photo undergrad at Parsons), but RIT has called and accepted me! offering quite a generous amount of money in scholarship, plus money in assistantship.

ICP-Bard called me for an interview two weeks ago, and they said they would notified within a week. I still haven't heard from them. They say they interviewed about 30 people, and about 12 people get in. Has anyone here applied to their program, interviewed, and heard anything back?

Finally, SVA is the longest wait. They say on their site they will notify via email on April 1st. Has anyone else heard from SVA prior to this date?

Nervewrecking. Fingers crossed, but am ready for a no. And regarding Rochester... I am just so insecure about the idea of moving from the city to Rochester. What about the contacts, the clients, all the stuff I've build up in NYC? Will Rochester be challenging? Any piece of advice you guys might have, let me know! :)

Hey Laura, I wanted to let you know that I heard from ICP today with an acceptance phone call. I hope you got got in as well. I know what you mean about RIT - I considered applying there, especially since they have such great funding but the idea of living in Rochester scared me a little bit. However, it's a great program and I think, if you decide to go there, that you'll have less distractions that in NYC and be able to focus on your work that much more. Good luck with the rest of your applications!

Has anyone heard anything from CalArts?????? I have heard a few people who have staggeringly been told they are in but Im kinda dying over here

Sstucky, when did you get into SVA? I thought they said they would send notification of all acceptances via mail, on April 1st. I'm confused because I wonder, if I haven't gotten an email from them at this point, it means I didn't get in.

Anyone else heard from SVA?

Well I guess its not really based solely on my preference of school now, unfortunately, as much as I want to go to a particular school, I'll be going to the one who can provide the most $ since both of these places are super expensive and I've already got one decent offer which is doable from ASU. Bah, I forgot to buy lottery tickets again.

ASU will likely be the best deal. Private schools have a hard time competing with state schools when it comes to giving out money. Also, your other two schools are located in uber expensive cost-of-living areas. Don't forget to check out rents on Craigslist for all the cities you've been accepted to or you may be kicking yourself later (unless you are going school-owned housing then of course get the info from them).

Hi all,

Has anyone else been placed on the 'short' wait list at CalArts, MFA Photo? I was just notified that I was placed on this list on Saturday, and I'm trying to figure out how "short" the list really is - and, whether or not it's worth deferring other offers in hopes of being bumped up to acceptance status.

Thanks!

I have been placed on the list as well. I'm not sure how long it is either, but I definitely wouldn't turn down any other offers until you contact them and ask what place you are on the list, or your chances etc.

Hi l'artiste,

Thanks for the good advice. I called CalArts today, and the person I spoke with couldn't tell me where I ranked on the waitlist. Did they let you know?

Thanks!

No, they didn't tell me where I was ranked. But, in the letter it said that we wouldn't know if we got in until June, which is waaaay too late then to accept any other offer. I don't know what kind of other offers you recieved, but I know that I am probably going to accept another offer because I don't want to take that chance of not getting off the wait list.

I hope SFAI and CalArts can give me some notification of financial aid! Then I could get the difficult decisions I've been dreading over with and start planning my life. Also it could poss free up some places for other people. Also I have no idea if I'm in or out of SVA still...

Got into ICP-Bard! The chair called me last Wednesday but I missed the call since I was out of the country, and then the whoooooole weekend went by, and I was just intently staring at my phone. Then he called again Monday (yesterday) with the good news! :)

So now I have two top-notch MFA photo programs to choose from! RIT (top 5 in the country according to US. News Report) and ICP-Bard (they only take about 10 to 12 people people each year!).

Thoughts?

If anyone wants an update I've been accepted to the 4 schools I applied to : SVA SFAI, CalArts and ASU although I can't make any decisions until the final financial sruff has been sorted. ASU has offered me a fairly attractive package (does anyone know how many MFA photograpjy students they have each year?) and SVA have offered me a pretty tiny one, I'm still hoping for a finacial miracle from CalArts and as yet no word from SFAI yet. Its still anyone's game really.

They haven't responded to me yet either. I called earlier this week and the director of admissions checked on the status of my application. She said no decision had been made yet. She did say, however, that she had decisions for many of the other finalists already.

Any photo applicants not heard one way or the other from Tyler? It's pretty late to not be notifying people one way or another, especially when interviews have happened. Not on my list of schools I'm planning to reapply to next year after this..

Do you mind if I ask, what did SVA offer? Was that part of the acceptance letter or the financial aid package?
