impending Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 (edited) So have no Rhetoric applicants on the forums heard anything yet? It doesn't seem like it, but the announcement posted on their website leads me to believe that may just mean no rhetoric applicants from the forum got in... Very willing (and hoping) to be wrong, though! Edited February 17, 2012 by impending
HaruNoKaze Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 hm... so nine people have been accepted from the forum users, but no one from rhet? I didn't think it was that obscure that no one out there lurking or a regular would be rhet... what about cultural studies? I wonder how UT has the specializations grouped together...
HaruNoKaze Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 I received an email directly from Cesar Salgado informing me that I had been placed on a "short waitlist" (although it looks like at least two other folks were as well - - I wonder just how "short" we're talking here??). I'm pleased to have been considered eligible even if i don't end up attending. Congratulations to everyone who was accepted, and I hope everyone hears from them soon! I just googled Cesar Salgado and he pulled up as faculty for the Latin American Studies dept... mind if I ask your concentration/specialization? (UT is like obviously my number 1 top over the stars choice here, in case it wasn't obvious)
impending Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 (edited) Yeah, the announcement, to me, suggests that they're totally done with all first round offers. But that definitely seems inconsistent with the results posted here, as normally people outside of literature have been pretty good about stating their specialty...and I agree, it seems unlikely that no one on the forum outside of lit got in. Well, at least they're saying we'll know definitively by the end of next week. :/ I've been really really hoping for UT too. Fingers still crossed for both of us. HaruNoKaze Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Yea I'm wondering if maybe the choices have been made, but the assigned faculty to email/contact accepted students vary so much that maybe the rhet person is just behind. or, the possiblilty, rhet didn't accept anyone b/c they are full and not looking for/at any applicants right now.
HaruNoKaze Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 My status changed on the website, check that too? Haru -- I'm contemporary and digital poetics. I'm still researching... if you don't mind, who sent you the email? I'm trying to figure out if rhet would be with the Digital Literacies and Literatures? based on the website those two may be grouped together...
antecedent Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 No one studies linguistics but me, is what I'm taking away from the UT Austin admits. Also, they must not have admitted any lang/ling hopefuls. Or something. *Faint*
perrykm2 Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 So jealous of anyone accepted to UTA! I didn't apply because my research interests don't fit at all, but I love Austin. The most amazing city!
HaruNoKaze Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 austin is beautiful, the food is amazing, and those damn white squirrels... mythical... i don't get to spend enough time there!!! ugh! why, UT, why must you toy with my heart so!!!
Ryzhaya Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 HaruNoKaze, I'm in Comp Lit, not English. I'm assuming all the Comp Lit letters came from Salgado in his capacity as Graduate Advisor for that department, because I'm not a Latin Americanist.

Historiogaffe Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 I wonder if there's a scientific correlation between white squirrels and Universities of T[x] -- Toronto has them too!
HunkyDory Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 I'm still researching... if you don't mind, who sent you the email? I'm trying to figure out if rhet would be with the Digital Literacies and Literatures? based on the website those two may be grouped together... Wayne Lesser sent the email. He's the Graduate Adviser
HaruNoKaze Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Thanks yall for letting me know! it's like a puzzle but the pieces don't seem to fit.
antecedent Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 I need to learn to not go to work when I get a decision. Hearing back from UW-Madison and NOT hearing from UT Austin in the same day means I literally got no work done. A sympathetic coworker told me to stay home today cause I just kept hitting the refresh button. Sigh. I guess we'll know by the 24th. Application still says "In Review". I wonder how often the draw from their waitlist? Last year I was reading it was a very holistic process that included an unranked wait list and the individual reevaluation of all waitlisted apps.

Yes, that is what the waitlist letter said last year, but having gone through the process and having a friend in the program, I can tell you it is basically a subfield waitlist. A good number of people do get in off the waitlist. I found the communication bridging on abominable while on the waitlist, though, which kind of turned me off and I took another offer. Anyway, it's a great school with some amazing faculty and there is a good chance if you get waitlisted. I got the waitlist email on President's Day. I remember because I was driving a big van full of college speech team kids in the snow and pulled over to check my email on my smartphone
andsoitgoes161 Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 (edited) Hey...a little late, but I'm a rhet person too and also haven't heard anything. To be honest I wasn't expecting to get in, but I do find it odd that no rhet or linguistics people (that means you antecedent haha) have heard. Maybe their accepted rhet applicants were smart enough to stay away from these forums? Also, antecedent: CONGRATS ON MADISON!!!!!!!! That's so fantastic! I just saw your updated tagline! impending Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 (edited) New accpetance on the board in rhetoric, says it was recieved yesterday. Guess that confirms that all specializations did go out. Congrats to those admitted! Now I'll continue to hold my breath for the waitlist. Edited February 17, 2012 by impending
HaruNoKaze Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 yea i just saw it. hmm... I'd be interested to know who they got an email from yesterday...

Yeah I'm totally mystified as to where the lang/ling folks are. Apparently not at GradCafe... I guess all we can do at this point is cross our fingers and hope to be waitlisted. WendyMoira Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Antecent- mind elaborating a little more about your specialty? I ask because my significant other has applied this year, too. He does linguistics analyses of literature and had a really hard time choosing schools because so few seem to fit. He didn't apply to Texas, but I'm wondering if maybe he should have. Thoughts?
HunkyDory Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 So everyone that got in--you're going to the visitors' days, right? I'm pumped for it--it's kind of ridiculous how late it is, but I'm sure it's because of SXSW. Apparently people will rent out their houses/apartments for $500+ a night during SXSW, there's just that much of a shortage of places to stay
bdon19 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 I'm definitely planning on going! I'm not going to pass up an opportunity to go on a free trip to Austin, whether or not I decide to go there!
marlowe Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Yep, I RSVP'd yesterday. I am very excited, but I am also somewhat disappointed that it doesn't fall until April. That means that I won't be able to make my final decision until at least April 7th - the day that we return from Austin - and we'll be leaving the people on the waitlist hanging.
HunkyDory Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Wow, thanks Austin for CC-ing all the acceptances instead of BCC-ing them on this latest visting info email. Not an unprofessional thing to do at all.
