Safferz
Does anyone know if the two Harvard interviews on the board are meaningful in that if we didn't receive such a request we shouldn't be hopeful for admission? They strike me as pretty informal but it may be the norm in the department for professors to informally interview students they hope to admit. Harvard doesn't have interviews. I've heard that decisions have been made, but to my knowledge students have not yet been notified. Last year a mass acceptance email went out on February 14th, from the graduate coordinator. czesc
Hmm...I'm curious to know the application status of anyone who has had or is scheduled to have an interview at Penn.
stillalivetui
stillalivetui - mine simply states "submitted." Not very helpful.... I know it doesn't mean anything but my program description changed from "hist6" to "history," it's just strange. Hope I get some good news though, I really like their program. benedicite
Hmm...I'm curious to know the application status of anyone who has had or is scheduled to have an interview at Penn.Okay, I had a Penn interview earlier this week. Under the submission status, it says it was submitted 12/3/12. Under the application status, it says it was completed the during the middle of last month (1/16/13). History Time
For other Indiana applicants, what does it say for you under the "status" column on the online application? Mine says "submitted." I applied for PhD with MA consideration.
New England Nat
It's best not to try and read the entrails of chickens. The letters will come. You guys still have a long time before all the schools finish. And those of you who now have to weigh two or more offers really need to start a decisions thread so as not to rub it in the face of those waiting. simone von c, aec09g, optimusrhyme and 1 other
Simple Twist of Fate
FYI: IU-Bloomington has started the process of notifying accepted applicants (including Ph.D. students). However, if you've applied and didn't get a response yet, don't give up. They don't notify all in one batch like many other schools do. One prof. did mention that funding will be very tight this year, so there won't be a lot of offers this cycle. (feel free to PM me if you have more questions) Congratulations to all the accepted students so far this cycle. I've been buried with coursework this semester, so I haven't been able to post much, but good luck to everyone. This thread finally looks like ours did last year, which is to say, freaked out. Try to stay calm and remember not to tie your self-esteem as a person or as a scholar to these acceptances. vtstevie
Just an FYI for people waiting on UC Davis - I have it on good authority that decisions were being made last week, so hopefully we'll be finding out sooner rather than later.

lafayette
Returned home to find a Columbia acceptance. Am in complete shock to be honest. I have no words. Congratssss!!! It's been quite the week and next week is sure to be just as intense !
lafayette
Hmm...I'll take that either to mean it's good or it's meaningless, but probably not bad. Mine said incomplete for a while ... Now complete 1/26. I think it's just admissions checking off your app materials. By the way last year UPenn accepted in waves, even interviewed and accepted people weeks after a wave of rejections. They are the perfect example of it not being over till it's over. Sio68
czesc
Yeah but you can see the evidence on the board here of Penn doing that. For Columbia and Princeton, it looks like most admits came in one fell swoop last year (early POI leaks notwithstanding). Let's not prolong people's agony. Worst case, it's a nice surprise if somehow you got admitted to a school you thought you were definitely out of the running for. New England Nat
oh, i'll be blunt for you. Princeton sent out all their admits. They don't do waves. And no one from the last two years came off the wait list. They admit almost 40% more students than they'd be happy taking. They'd have to have an extraordinary large number of people turn them down before they'd pull from the wait list. sbarndt
lafayette
I know -- not trying to give you false hope here specifically for today's schools (I'm aware I am out at Columbia), just pointing out Penn's style, which a few other schools seem to do too. Just saying silence isn't damning across the board. It's still awful though, certainly.

I'd never do that, I'm not that kind of person. For most of us here, this is new and it's sometimes stressful and sometimes overwhelming. So I'm sorry if that came across badly, know that it wasn't my intention, and try to cut us some slack... we're all up and down like a rollercoaster and sometimes brains can't catch up. Good luck to everyone today. Looks like Princeton is an implicit rejection for me at this point. I'll cross my fingers that those who haven't heard anything get some positive news today! lafayette is right.. some schools definitely don't do it in one go, for whatever reason. I've also noticed changing patterns between years so historical tradition isn't always accurate either. lafayette
heulwen
Man, Columbia broke my heart. In case anyone wondering, I'm the Umass Amherst admit on the board. I am wondering if anyone else here in this forum studying/been admitted there. I'd like to exchange some ideas & information. Let's hope this Friday will bring more good news to all of us. I was admitted to U Mass Amherst yesterday! Not at Columbia, though, apparently - heh! Congratulations to all the admits! (THAT said, if anyone wants any advice on the city, including living in it on a very small budget, don't hesitate to message me).And I have heard wonderful, wonderful things about living in Amherst! My boyfriend made me read my over-the-top series of texts I sent him yesterday, that ran from wildly pessimistic to unreasonably optimistic. It's a far too emotional business, even if we know rationally we shouldn't get so worked up. I'll try to keep it cool and it's not my intention to rub anything in anyone's face. It's a weird, weird month.
BerenErchamion
Wonder about IU-B. I'm Master's so probably won't be hearing anything for awhile. Congrats to everyone! At least for their MLIS program (to which my girlfriend applied, and was admitted Wednesday!), they send out notifications by postal mail. I applied for History Ph.D. at IUB and haven't heard anything, but the mail hasn't come yet today--I suspect that all programs notify via mail. We live in Indiana so it takes less time for mail to get here than for others, I'm sure.

czesc
About a page back or so I posted the notice on Chicago's Social Sciences website that decisions would be coming out in March, but other departments have released already, so it definitely seems like we could get them sooner. I wouldn't expect anything from the Northeast today, especially New England, as it's in full freakout mode over the snowstorm. Office admins who would be in charge of the mass emails will be sent home early, etc. Edited February 8, 2013 by czesc
