jaywalker Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 To take my mind off the agony of waiting, I've been browsing through the math topics looking for something that might be relevant to me. But the pickings are slim! I don't bring this up to complain...I just find it very curious! Is this forum a reflection of the percentages of math majors in the world who specialize in Stats? I know there's a stigma that Statistics is easier than Pure Math...is this coming into play here? What are your thoughts?
Biostat_Assistant_Prof Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Well, my interest lies in Biostatistics... Other than the web pages of the schools programs themeslves, there isn't too much info out there about rankings, admissions, etc... I have found more useful information regarding Biostatistics on these forums than anywhere else. What I'm saying is, it's possible that there is less info available, so people have more questions about Statistics than other math.
ANDS! Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Mathematicsgre.com is a far better "source" for doctoral programs in Math. R Deckard and Hanyuye 1 1
wine in coffee cups Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 There are several regular posters here who are current students (or faculty even I think?) in stats or biostats, so questions about those fields tend to get very lengthy and useful comments. As ANDS points out, the pure math people get advice on other forums where there is a better concentration of knowledgeable current grad students to field questions.
Agradatudent Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I personally don't enjoy mathematicsgre.com whether it's a better source or not. The "applicants" you see are sometimes so overwhelmingly strong that you have to wonder if they're lying or not.

That would be a pretty petty thing to lie about, especially since most people don't even use any semblance of a name. That being said there are some pretty strong profiles, but equally "mid grade" profiles as well. echlori and R Deckard 1 1

quinquenion Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 (edited) After spending too much time on the internet, I am of the opinion that people lie about much less... I think there's just a very strong self-selection effect going on. Not only because people with stronger profiles are more likely to post when application season rolls around, but also because many of us were in the process of preparing for the Math GRE when we discovered the site. Although I was a lurker earlier on, I certainly credit mathgre.com with at least marginally improving my subject score. That also sort of explains why mathgre.com gets more of the math applicants. We simpler discover mathgre.com at an earlier stage in the process when preparing for the exam, and then sort stick around for application season. p.s. As one of the arguably stronger applicants this season, I can assure you that not only am I real, but very google-able as well from just my profile info. kuz Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 After spending too much time on the internet, I am of the opinion that people lie about much less... That's a pretty damn paranoid attitude to have. I don't see what benefit anyone could get from lying about their achievements on the forum. And as one of the reasonably strong applicants on there, it's kinda insulting to suggest that I'd be lying R Deckard 1
ANDS! Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 After spending too much time on the internet, I am of the opinion that people lie about much less... Perhaps. I am going to go out on a limb here though and suggest that that's most likely NOT happening here. I mean, how socially broken would you have to be to specifically search out that site, and then craft an anonymous profile with ok statistics. You'd have to be, like a Super Villain or something. Agradatudent Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 I never said everyone was faking it, but I would not be surprised if more than we thought were. Maybe not even serious changes, but nudges here and there that just make the application that much better. People lie. They just do.. echlori and R Deckard 1 1
