I applied to GMU public policy program.

This Wed it will be week 4. The wait is killing me!!!!!!!!

their web site says to receive a response within 3-4 weeks

When universities reject applicants, do they let them know asap ie 2nd week or do they send the rejection as well as the acceptance letters at the same time?

in other words - Is there still a 50-50 possibility even after waiting 1 month?

I am worried I was rejected and they forgot about my application, probably used it for firewood because the electricity bill is high.

They probably did. In all honesty, if you hear absolutely nothing after a month you probably got rejected and you'll get a letter in March or April. In my experience if you haven't heard anything by now or early march (especially no phone call for an interview or anything in a humanities program like English), then you're more likely to be a reject than an accepted student.

That's not necessarily true. It's my understanding that most humanities programs (including English) actually don't do interviews (although I believe the OP said s/he applied to public policy). OP, I'd say give it until mid-March, then email the program to check in. A lot of programs have been getting record numbers of applications this year, and it may be taking them longer than they expected to make decisions. Best of luck!

I don't know about public policy, but that's completely untrue in some social sciences. For example, none of the big anthropology programs have interviews, and they often hold people on waitlist, expecting to dip into it as some of the folks they accept first decide not to attend. For 6 of my 9 programs, there are no results posted on this page at all as of yet, and last year shows the first notifications in either direction in early March. The last acceptances were in the beginning of April.

Even my advisor has told me it is way too early to expect to have heard anything, since anthropologists as a group are painfully difficult to keep on schedule.

So, OP, it's true that it looks grim if you were expecting an interview. But if your programs don't make a policy of call for interviews, then sit down and chill out, because you may have another month to wait.

I will not feel offended by the computer ee geeks stuff...

However you might think that while, we, Computer Scientists are indeed geeks... Everyone applying to grad school has his/her own geekness that led them through this whole process :P. However you might be right in saying that people in other programs might be better in the socializing skills....

There is absolutely NO way of knowing, as every adcom is different and follows a different procedure and protocol when it comes to admissions. For example, some students get rejected outright and some may get accepted outright, with the middle stack taking more time. Moreover, some applicants may get waitlisted, but instead of sending out waitlist notifications, some schools will simply wait to see if they receive declined offers so they can just send an acceptance instead. Then there is an issue of funding that has to be decided--and who gets what funding can be a harder decision as they move down the acceptance list. All said, having to wait longer can mean a good thing or a bad thing; that is, it means nothing at all. Take it easy. If they absolutely did not want you, you would have already heard back.
