  1. I'm supposed to be doing the housing thing now as well...would help if hubby would quit changing his mind about whether we should rent/buy!
  2. I love my netbook for travelling and classes - but when I get home I want my full size laptop
  3. I was commuting last year for my MA but then I had a serious car accident and lost my drivers licence... my husband chauffeured me back and forth for the rest of the year but in September - doing my PhD at the same uni - I'll have to have a place there. I guess. I don't really WANT one ... but there is a residency requirement - and even when I get my licence back (4 - 6 weeks now WOO HOO!!!) - I don't think hubby could handle the stress of having me on the road that much any more. He'll join me around the end of October ... until then will come home just on weekends.
  4. I continued my teaching job - in a totally unrelated field - while I did my MA and would like to hold onto it while I do my Phd, as well, although it seems like they are not going to be as accommodating as the MA program has been. But that's teaching... and at a place that I would like to go back to when I'm done, albeit in a different department altogether. I don't know if I would keep it if it were something I wasn't sure I wanted to go back to.
  5. Sounds like a very good idea...good luck with it
  6. I would like to get bunches of reading done over the summer... but if this first week off is any indication, it ain't happening. I do have a major research paper to write yet, though.
  7. I've been told several times that it is better to go to at least two different universities over the course of your academics. I'm doing my MA and Phd at the same school, then hopefully returning to my undergrad uni to teach.
  8. registered...and booked a room in the residence as well ... will have to look into the other...although hubby is likely to get irked if I book too many more weeks away
  9. damn! I didn't this year... am really going to miss that $$
  10. I did my undergrad at Laurentian (Barrie/Sudbury) and now am at Trent Spending a week at U of Victoria this June for a course - am really looking forward to visiting BC
  11. wow... those are two very different paths... good luck with whichever you choose
  12. I would certainly think that asking for clarification is more than reasonable. good luck!
  13. that is great news.... I hope we'll hear a lot more like it! oops...that was a reply to earlier comments!
  14. If you happen to hit on something he won't use, he can always re-gift it .... even chocolate. It's the thought that counts, right? I don't do gifts, but my advisor/referee and I do lunch occasionally so I try to pay more than my share (it's a bit of a battle as she usually wants to pay to celebrate whatever)
  15. hopefully he is just trying to make sure you're not expecting a life of ease and that it won't be that bad does the school have restrictions about the number of hours you're expected to work? Here in Ontario, we are (supposedly) limited to 10 hours/week
  16. that would be frustrating.... got my fingers crossed for good news for you
  17. this made me smile.... seems like we all stress no matter what... having too many choices is as bad as having not enough. Hope the buyer's remorse thing passes quickly
  18. lots of us old folk around Morrius.... I'll be >50 by the time I get my PhD. You'll get back into it
  19. sorry that I don't have any advice for you ...but congratulations! I was glad to see that they were GOOD marital issues.
  20. They obviously didn't take offense at being asked before... a polite query would seem more than reasonable to me
  21. I think there's an awful lot to be said for not having the stress of ever-increasing debt hanging over your head while you're studying
  22. I worked this year, during my MA, while taking a full load.... also taught 3 sections at another school ... but next year in a different PhD program (but same uni) it is not looking good...even though I am only expected to take 1 course, plus the core, which is one day a MONTH, and TA 10 hours/week max ...they frown on such things might still see if I can pull it off without them knowing, but am doubtful...which bites, as I really like what I do, and I DO want to keep my foot in that particular door. Honestly, I think it is unreasonable
  23. Congratulations! That is awesome!
  24. I take it you've checked the web app? I got my rejection there before the mail got here
