  1. I want to be! too much to get done though... but am SO looking forward to having some time off this summer.... just as soon as I get all this semester's work done and write my major research paper and get through my three weeks of summer school and...and... and...
  2. rundown09, a few people in my cohort were discussing the grad day they attended last year (I missed it).... and how many of the people they met and made connections with ended up not attending anyway ... this year, they're not even having one... they felt they could use the resources more effectively
  3. Peterborough was not high on my list of places I wanted to live...and it still wouldn't be my first choice... but the school itself was definitely the best fit for me.... and I'm glad I chose it, even though, based on my initial funding offers, I should'a gone to Brock (got an OGS, so it worked out in my favour anyway)
  4. of course you're not a loser.... can't believe that there are still so many schools that haven't bothered letting people know anything... not nice hang in there...got my fingers crossed for you
  5. Seriously glad to hear it....congratulations!
  6. wish the OP would fill us in...I want to know what happened in that meeting! or maybe I just missed it?
  7. we're still dithering between renting & buying...so likely won't make a decision/move until the last minute...which would mean Sept 1
  8. nothing helpful to offer...but good luck!
  9. I have accepted the one offer I have - haven't heard from the second yet, which really doesn't much matter, since I'm not considering it. Still, it would be nice to know.... I saw that someone here got word of acceptance into the same program on Friday.....so I'm guessing it is a good thing I don't want to go there
  10. certainly seems like it should be a positive indicator.... either that, or someone is taking incompetence to new levels
  11. Sure would make life easier if they would all get it together so that people didn't end up in such situations... wish I had some advice for you ... it's no wonder that some people accept and then wind up declining if a better offer comes in.
  12. oh am so glad to hear it...congratulations I feel soooooooo bad for all of the people who are still waiting.... so relieved not to be one of you, but ....I feel for you
  13. Wow...I didn't know how spoiled we are here in Ontario... it's pretty much policy that the expectation is that you'll work no more than 10 hours/week at your university (of course, I get 'round that by teaching 9 hours a week elsewhere, also, but that's a don't ask/don't tell kind of thing)

    Summers

I'm pretty much resigned to paying through the summer months.... BUT am happy dancing because a couple of profs I have talked to about the need to stay there through the summer have said that it really isn't as required as all that.... and that while they SAY it, no one is actually around to see whether you're there or not so not to worry about it; just need to make sure the work is getting done. My husband works full time and then some through the summer months, so really doesn't have time to be chauffeuring me back and forth ... and I REALLY want to be HOME; that works for me.
  15. Just wondering if any one might have any experience/advice re: talking to the program one is going into about health problems or disabilities? I am really hoping not to have to bring it up .... have a specialist appt coming up and in an ideal world, she'll have some nice & easy diagnosis and solution so that by the time I start my doctorate in the fall it will be a nonissue I would be pretty surprised if they haven't already heard about the issues.... kind of figuring they have...and that if they had questions or were concerned about it, they'd ask.... but on the other hand, if they have heard and I don't say anything, then will it look as though I haven't been forthcoming?
  16. lots of great ideas to check out.... am looking forward to that in the meantime though, I use the Ross plan to keep track of my books Ross would be my husband... he is very good at finding just the title I need.... even if he's never seen/read the book.... once in awhile, when he was having trouble finding something, I've got to google images and pulled up what the book actually looks like... but usually all he needs is a title he also builds my bookshelves .... and is very handy at the library too .... LOL Not bad for a video guy turned pest control guy
  17. yikes! I don't know what is likely to happen ...I think that depends on what the policies are at your university... but I will keep my fingers crossed for you
  18. I thought I wanted to, and was disappointed that it wasn't an option ...but now am really glad that I changed schools....and am staying at the second for my PhD as well, although in a different program
  19. Yikes! Makes my language requirement pale in comparison. I SO do not envy you .... best of luck with it.

    Summers

I was talking to a student in the program I'm going into today ....she says they were told that they should plan to be around during the summer as well.... SO not liking that! My husband works full time spring --> fall ...and I can't drive, at least for the time being (medical problems) ..... hopefully will get it sorted out before next year when it matters.
  21. you'd think they could have at least responded directly! Sure hope the other one(s) come through

    Scared?

I'm so glad I read this thread....I felt that way all of last semester - was just starting to get over it and then I got my acceptance into PhD program (different department; same university) ..... and find myself wondering again if there hasn't been some mistake
  23. Wow...if nothing else, this thread has reminded me how very lucky I am.... my husband not only is willing to move to wherever is necessary for my academic career... since I lost my drivers' license last November, he's been chauffeuring me all over the place without complaint. we live in one place, and I teach in another 40 minutes from home and am doing my MA - and then my PhD as well - in yet another city that is 2.5 hours from either of those locations. He spends a LOT of time sitting around ...both while I'm in class, and also at the motel while I'm reading/doing homework. He works during the spring/summer... so wont be as available ...but since I am taking the summer (mostly) off, we should be able to make it work. I am very lucky.
  24. The best way to learn something really well is to teach it. I would strongly encourage you to give it a try, but to be open with your advisor or TA mentor about your reservations and ask for support when you need it. I've been teaching for awhile now... so my current TA position was not so intimidating... but even so, it has been well worth doing.
  25. I am in Canada, so the numbers probably wouldn't help you much ... I am a greedy guts though and am working (not so) secretly ...I teach at a community college 2 days a week right now... hoping to be able to finagle a way to keep doing it through my Phd studies as well but it's not looking so good.
