Drexel: Online and on campus - can't apply to both?
flit replied to howdygina's topic in Applications
that seems very odd... if there WAS such a restriction, they certainly should have said so up front. I hope you didn't have to pay for both separately! -
How frustrating! I think I'd be leaning towards the funded offer just because the other one doesn't seem to be willing to be straightforward. But then I have little patience for such BS sometimes Okay ... all the time!

better than a kick in the head

I taught 3 sections of relational database for another school altogether while doing my MA... another case of I asked and they said "what I don't know doesn't hurt anybody" haven't sorted whether I can manage it scheduling wise during my Phd ...but if I CAN pull it off, I most certainly will. For me it is less about the $$ and more about keeping my foot in the door ... am hoping to go back there once I'm done...so doesn't make sense to give up my courses unless I absolutely have to.

got my fingers crossed for good news for you .... you will let us know, I hope!

Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences - Carleton U
flit replied to flit's topic in 2009 Archive
hmmm...guess I need to go find some info about posting links in here -
Just wondering if any of you Canadian types are planning to attend the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences which is being held at Carleton U in Ottawa this year? I'm going to be there from the 23rd to the 27th, and hope to get to several of the sessions offered by their Career Corner among other things.

As one of my profs keeps saying, it is supposed to be hard And so I keep reminding myself every time it is.

Congrats, geodude! Glad to hear it I received a rejection from York U yesterday finally

I am so old that the fact that I am the first to get a university degree at all has really never occured to me.... am nontraditional in so many other ways.... but I am very interested in this thread .... and, I hope, will remember it as I hopefully have ever increasing teaching opportunities; thank you.

I think the most likely to be effective part of your plan is to go talk to someone at your prospective school(s). I was able to apply previous courses toward my undergraduate degree, which greatly shortened the amount of time it took and did not at all hamper my ability to continue on to grad school... but I think that in my case, only courses in which I got As were credited....so that might be an issue. Certainly can't hurt to ask though.
-
I think now or never is highly over-rated... and if you want to do the grad school thing, you should keep at it for as long as it takes. But then I'm 48 and just finishing up my MA and about to start my Phd this fall. Whoever told you it was now or never was wrong... there are lots of people far older than you are in grad school and we have a lot to offer.
-
that would definitely hurt!

yikes...that is a BIG oops I wonder if the second email said APRIL FOOLS!
-
oh, man ...that just sucks so bad... I'm sorry for everyone in this position

I think it was early April last year.... I did hear that one person from my undergrad school was accepted into UofT for an MA in Computer Technology - that was a couple of weeks ago. And there are a few results for York U in the Results Search - TRULY a pain in the posterior finding them in all of the NYU results though

One thing to be cautious of re: buying books ahead is that syllabi can change.... I bought all the books that were posted for my courses and then once we started classes, found out that several were no longer required. Wasn't a huge deal - many of them were still useful ... but if $$ is tight.... I also did a lot of reading - and then discovered that in some of our texts, only a very few sections were required.... that actually helped, rather than hurt though, really Getting a jump on things can't hurt - and also, showing up for any orientation activities that are planned is a good idea, I think ....even when they are relatively lame/uninteresting... if nothing else, they give you an opportunity to meet people and start making connections

I applied to both of these last year and their acceptances came LONG after the other schools I had applied to. Like 2 months later... apparently they figure that even those who have already accepted elsewhere will jump ship for their offers, so they don't have to be timely about them at all. I didn't - but I know a lot of others did, including some who had accepted where I did go, at Trent. I did see that a few people have heard from York this year .... I haven't yet... and still says No Decision Yet online. Not too worried about it as I'm staying at Trent anyway. Good luck with your applications though - I hope they let you know soon!

More good news! Congratulations!

waitlist versus weightlist

works for me -
It sounds to me like you need an advisor - preferably someone in the industry you want to be in - to help you sort this one out. Congratulations on getting in, though! Have you checked whether you might be able to defer?

I'm having a hard time with the house hunting thing... partly because we haven't really decided between buying & renting - and partly because I really don't want to move. I didn't bother getting a place for my MA (same school) ... just stayed in a motel for the days I needed to be there each week .... but the Phd program has, they tell me, a residency requirement and the motel doesn't count
-
Ouch...I'm sorry to hear that
-
oh that would be SO frustrating! If they know already they should tell you!
