Accepted an offer; now what???

Recommended Posts

It seems like all of the apprehension and hoopla has suddenly faded, and now there is an uncanny sense of calm. I have no idea what happens after this. My graduate director has said that I shall be able to enroll in classes sometime in June. What is going on with the rest of you? How does it work from now till the day we start classes in August? Everything just seems too unobtrusive!!

I received information about obtaining a visa (that I don't actually need) from the university, but nothing at all from the department. The silence is definitey irksome.

I just received an email from my department with some information about the upcoming semester. I wouldn't worry about not hearing yet; a lot of schools are still finalizing their lists of who's coming and who isn't. Remember, too, that the end of the semester is approaching (or already here) and they are probably very busy with that stuff. Unfortunately, we may be on the back-burner until they have a bit more time (though it feels to us like we should be the priority).

I can definitely relate with the odd calm after having accepted an offer. I just recently went through a roughly 48-72 hour crisis where I questioned my decision, doubted I wanted to attend graduate school in English, considered applying to a post-bac pre-med program, looked into requirements for medical school, considered getting a job at Google, and then finally determined that what I want is to go to graduate school in English. In the immediate 36 hours since that crises, I have become more excited than I ever was about attending, have made a list of courses I'd like to take, have figured out a way to pass the translation exam, and decided to join some extracurricular activities at my institution.

 + + + :( + + + + :D = B) (<--- how I feel right now; sunglasses to hide all other emotions)

When it first happened, I thought, "maybe this isn't the right path for me, since I'm having these doubts."

Then I remembered the past 5 months I've spent on these fora, and could rest assured that others were sharing my feelings.

My dad referred to that as my "running away to join the circus" phase. I was totally gonna go to vet school too, damnit!

I know our department is TOTALLY swamped with grading, paper writing, Kalamazoo, departmental awards, etc. It isn't because your new departments don't love you that you're not getting info; it is because profs, staff, and students are fighting to survive ;) I got info from my department in May/June and corresponded a bit with POIs over the summer. I would just really recommend you wait until mid-May to start contacting people so everyone can get through the hellaciousness that is right now.

I've channeled all my former momentum into trying to find a place to live for myself and the true Thunderpaws. I'm heading down in about two weeks to scope out the housing scene, and to lurk around the department.

I also send my new-found momentum gleefully counting down the days until I can quit my server job. Putting in two weeks will have never felt so good!
