Jargon & Acronym Dictionary - for grad life and forums

I remember in elementary school when reading strategies would include looking for context clues to words you don't know. This strategy has served me pretty well figuring out what stuff meant on this forum, but there's a couple I'm still not sure about. Would people please post explanations for lingo here? (Or send me the link to where they're defined?)

Some that I've figured out (I think!):

SOP=Statement of Purpose

OP= Original Post (or poster)

UG= undergrad

Some I don't know:

POI= ... professor of interest?

BB= ?

And there are many others I can think of right now.

Thank you for starting this thread! I always assumed it was because of my Canadian handicap, but I had no clue what a PoI was. I figured it was the only one who didn't know, sooooo I never asked.

One of the problems with that acronym, is that it's not universal to the admission process for all disciplines. I didn't speak to a single person before sending out my application and I did fine.

Same as POI; just some English major's abbreviation.

A PI can also mean Principal Investigator -- as in the lead researcher for a project, where POI is usually something like "Person of Interest", i.e. someone that you are interested in working with for grad school.

Yea, I think I had all my applications in about two months before joining this forum and being exposed to any such terminology.
