Albanski
sunbean8, I think that was my problem that my personal statement did not really address the "ambassador" side of me. Instead, I wrote about how have I conducted research with gang members, drug dealers, and other dangerous groups. Looking back on it, I should have tailored it towards the cross-cultural exchange. I do not think they are going to offer additional funding, since Albania usually funds 2, but this year they funded three. I doubt anyone will reject the grant, but if it happens it happens. I kind of wish they would have posted successful applications online and basically a rubric of what to include in the personal statement. I believe that I have tried my hardest, and considering I will be doing research and teaching most of my life, there is always time. I wish you the best and am grateful for your advice! teo823
For all those who are alternates and are wondering why they are alternates you could email the fulbright office abroad or the embassy and ask them. I emailed the Albanian embassy and they said that "your project was not in line with Post's priorities this year." However, me and my Fulbright advisor think that the reason why I got dinged was because my topic may be sensitive "Marital violence data via interviewing." I mean this is such an important topic, and I recieved TWO letters of affiliation from two highly regarded professors from two different universities saying that they would love to work with me and that this project is important considering marital violence rates are estimated at 30%. This project was definately feasible since I speak and write fluently. It bothers me to think that I could've really contributed something great but was rejected because of sensitivity issues. I would be angry if someone who proposed historical projects recieved the grant over me, considering this is an important contemporary issue that affects the lives of most women. Although, the public affairs officer wrote "We of course would consider you again next year should you choose to apply to Albania," I don't know how realistic that is since they rejected me for this proposal once, and I would not change it because they see it as politically incorrect. Any ideas on what I should do. Should I have professors write letters to the embassy and fulbright asking for additional funding? I understand your frustration - I have a anthropology degree for a good school, a esl certificate and experience teaching, studied south asia in class work, sanskrit and hindi, hand good references from teachers and was wait listed, whats even worst was then wont tell me where i am on the list AND they moved me from my original country of application (nepal) to bangladesh and wont tell why they moved me there or based on what criteria...so yeah frustration abounds! suenteus
I'm trying to stay positive but it's not looking good! I called yesterday and was told that the letters were sent out two weeks ago and mine just got lost in the mail. I have a feeling that if I had gotten it, she would have just told me outright, since there's only a limited time to accept. Oh well! I'll be moving to Japan instead, which isn't too shabby. My proposal was to study attitudes toward the immigration debate among high schoolers in Utrecht. What was your proposal? Hmm, letters sent out two weeks ago would be the NAF grants. You might be right.. good thing you've got a solid backup plan. What are you doing in Japan? Teaching, research, work? Or just wanting to move abroad and Japan seemed like a good place to start? My proposal was to study and conduct collaborations between computer engineers, artists, and musicians in the Dutch arts scene.

Just because Fulbright didn't pick it up doesn't mean someone else won't. If I were you I'd keep looking for funding elsewhere, maybe within Albania, or from the US.. or women's rights orgs.. get creative.

Linkerzijde
Anyone know the status of additional funding for the Netherlands? I am an alternate with some very important life decisions to make over the next several months (aren't we all?). I am a little steamed about not receiving a principal grant, given I know the language and have published on my topic as it relates to the Netherlands, but I suppose we all are highly qualified applicants struggling for a limited number of grants. It's sad how they make us fight like ravenous dogs for the scraps from the table

tiny
Hey all, I was wondering whether anyone has heard from Croatia yet? I was named a finalist, and have yet to hear anything. My adviser has contacted them, but we keep hearing next week, and next...so frustrating! Also, would anyone happen to know when the DC orientation for Croatia might be? I'm assuming they group the countries geographically, so if anyone applied somewhere close to Croatia and already knows when their orientation is, please help!!! Good to know there are others suffering, I think my mailman is starting to think that I'm stalking him or something...

wishin&hopin
I completely understand about the whole mailman-stalking thing... Am somewhat confused...someone else on this forum got their letter for a research grant for Italy on monday (unfortunately it was a no); since I still didn't recieve any mail today, I called the program coordinator to see if my letter had been sent (I must admit that all the stories of lost mail on this forum have me a little worried!). The secretary said that our letters had been sent yesterday (the 30th). I thought all letters--rejection, acceptance, alternate--were sent out at the same time. ???? Has anyone else's country sent letters at different times? I want to hope that this is a good sign, but after months and months of waiting, this is getting painful! Is anyone else still waiting on Italy?
wishin&hopin
Alternates, take heart. I was just upgraded to principal status for the Netherlands. Congratulations!!! Just out of curiosity, how long did you have to wait between being notified that you were an alternate and being moved to principal status? kelsey
I learned that I had received a research grant to Germany nearly a month ago... I still haven't gotten the follow-up letter with grant authorization forms and stuff (although I did send in my medical reports), and I was wondering if anyone else has received anything? I know I won't be there until September 13th, but I find myself anxious for more information now. I'll click back through the forum, but if anyone else is also a German Research grantee, I'd love to talk to you! Congrats to everyone else who has gotten got news. Is anyone else still waiting on Italy? I feel your pain. It's been the same situation for Hungary. I heard from Rachel Holskin that the majority of people for Hungary haven't received their letters yet, but a few people were mailed letters nearly 2 weeks ago. Apparently this can happen when there is some holdup from the FSB. The rest of the Hungary letters were supposed to be sent out yesterday. Since I still haven't heard from Hungary, I don't know if this is a good sign or not.

Did Rachel tell you when the next "batch" for Hungary would be sent out?
cmcguir2
Not quite sure how to use these online forums - so if this doesn't post to the correct place I apologize! Is there any list of 2009-2010 Fulbright grantees posted anywhere? I received a research grant to the Dominican Republic and would love to know who else got one to the country / region. Thanks all! Albanski
There is still hope!!!!!!!!!!!!! I called the fulbright office today to ask them something and they informed me that they were just going to reach me (What a coincidence) They said that a ETA position might be opening up and since I am an alternat if I would be willing to do it. I was so excited! However, the manager said that the funding wasn't totally complete but she said there was a 75% chance (Good enough for me)..Do you guys think it will go through. I learned that the Fulbright office doesnt cal you unless its serious! She said she'll let me know by the middle of the week. Although it's not a research grant, I can still do independent research, my contacts would definately be up to this. Now I am on the waiting rollercoaster again, but Im trying not to be so excited since you never know. Let me know what you guys think about this, since I value your comments. mmitteis
I was recently named an alternate for the ETA to Poland. When I checked the application statistics, it said that they only awarded four grants.
