SunnyComposer Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 Just got rejected by NYU -- no surprise, they take ONE doctoral candidate every couple of years (who is fully funded). catenairs -- I'm going to the CUNY day, but don't have any details besides what the general email provided. Still waiting to hear from Columbia, UNT, UT and UC Davis. It's exciting that in a few weeks, we'll all know what's going on! Finally.
SunnyComposer Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Confused -- I saw 2 people got accepted to UNT 2 days ago for composition -- I received an email from them about a scholarship opportunity on the same day, but no notification about acceptance/rejection. Anyone have an opinion on the matter? Should I just wait? I'm thinking I'm either wait-listed or, for some reason, I didn't get their email. Thoughts?
Daisy Spiegelman Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Thank you, clarinetcola. Just curious, am I the only one who was not aware that our applications are screened by the school's graduate admissions department and there is a distinct possibility that the music department may never even see our documents?
echopw Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Are u using hotmail? If you use, you should check your trash mail. SunnyComposer Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Gmail -- but I checked there too! I split the difference and sent the administration an email -- we'll see what they say! Thanks for the response. Hope your applications are going well. Are u using hotmail? If you use, you should check your trash mail.
composser Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 SunnyComposer I am certain there was an acceptance by UNT because I know one of the people that got it. However, I don't know if they do acceptances in rounds, or all at once and then proceed to waitlists. Good luck anyways... I on the other hand am going insane over Columbia and Cornell. When are these guys going to notify? Anyone knows if Columbia did accept for comp?

Still waiting to hear from Columbia, UNT, UT and UC Davis. It's exciting that in a few weeks, we'll all know what's going on! Finally. How did NYU notify you? Is there a link to check your status, or is it only an email? I, too, am waiting to hear from them, but for the MM in Composition. At this point, I am trying to figure out my statuses for schools I am still waiting on. Going a little stir crazy! USC sent an email to prospectives two weeks ago requesting supplemental financial aid documents, so I am trying to see if my status changes on FA site. It says under review for financial aid.
SunnyComposer Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Thanks, yes, I saw already that the acceptances went out, that's why I'm curious. I'm pretty sure Columbia is around March 15 (see the results from the last couple years, pretty consistent). The Composer500 -- they just sent an email. MM is very different from PhD there -- very separate. I'm pretty sure they send out emails too, but not sure when. Did you check the results on this site? SunnyComposer Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Damn -- wait-listed at UNT. I thought I was a shoe-in there. Now I'll have to wait until April 15 no doubt to see if I got officially rejected there. Oi vey. Congrats to those who know what they're doing next year! I hope to be there sooner than later.
hiroshiman Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Sunny - I don't envy you in your wait. Good luck.

musicmage09 Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Problem is that March 15 is pretty consistent for rejections I'd say you're about right. I think the season is winding down. I think we only really have rejections and waitlist acceptances left to hear about.
SunnyComposer Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Ah, I see what you mean. That feels about right. I just chatted with the chair from UNT -- he says it depends on the year, but sometimes it can be a mad scramble on April 15 -- people pull out at the last second and others are offered it. They would be the only ones offering a full ride and TA-ship at this point, so I'm still interested. But, I thought I'd know by next week. To add another month of wondering is pretty awful... Anyway, yes, season is winding down finally!
runn Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 I think there are a few composition programs that have yet to send anything out, so some hope may remain. There are two schools that I haven't heard from yet, but I'm not particularly enthused about them, having gone 0/7 thus far. I think instead of applying again next year I'll just hire a guy to send me 9 emails wishing me "future success." Probably way more cost effective. SunnyComposer 1
Daisy Spiegelman Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 My optimism is waning, as well. Rejected from Princeton and CUNY, waiting to hear from UPenn, Columbia, and NYU but no invitations for an interview anywhere. I like your suggestion about hiring someone to send you those e-mails, run_kmc. I would ask that person to throw in a free massage and facial, though, as a consolation prize.
Counterpointer Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 I'm probably going to be rejected by every single PhD program I applied to, but I just got a good news from Temple University, for their Master's program. I may be getting a full TA, which comes with tuition waiver and $16000/year stipend+health insurance. Pretty sweet deal for master's. I guess there's no reason to decline the offer if it's fully funded... just hoping that the composition DMA students don't take all the full TA theory positions..
runn Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Hey, if you can get a funded master's degree, take it! Those are as rare as mythological beasts. Somewhere there's a blurry photo of a funded masters student walking through the forest. musichistorygeek 1

Those were an expensive nine emails. Even at a rate of $50 per email we'd come out way ahead.

With the exception of Ivy all my Ph.D./ D.M.A. schools don't offer more than 14k stipend!! Plus, two extra years mean a lot. It is very healthy to discover new things and passions in Music or otherwise. I know most people get carried away and finish everything as soon as they can, which can result in a general lack of interests outside their field of study. And "specialists" are really boring! We need more people like Bucky Fuller in our schools...
Karajan Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Hey guys, It's always such a huge downer to receive rejections -- I got one this morning! But I try to think of this guy, and others like him, who were rejected dozens of times before reaching their goal. This guy, Jack Andraka, received 199 rejections out of 200 applications he made for lab space and, with that one acceptance, he was able to get the lab space he needed to complete an amazing project that developed a new diagnostic tool for pancreatic cancer. Stay strong, guys!
SunnyComposer Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 So true, Karajan, in other words, "When at first you don't succeed, apply, apply again." I got flat out rejection from 6 schools last year -- it was a real blow to my ego (but was good for me too). That made me much more realistic this time around. Even still, the way it's panned out this year, I'm scratching my head until I hear if anyone's offering me mula. My standing at this point: Accepted: Stony Brook, CUNY Wait-listed: UNT, UT Rejected: Princeton, Yale, NYU No Word: Columbia (probably rejected), UC Davis (?) The only one that could potentially offer full funding is UNT, but will have to wait to hear about that. Stony Brook often offers a partial fellowship and a half-TA at least. CUNY only had 2 spots this year for funding, and I'm wait-listed for that. Such a game, such a game.
