candycrava Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Hi everyone! I thought I'd start a thread for us school psychology applicants! Where is everyone applying? I am applying for an Ed.S. to University of Delaware, Towson, Rider, Millersville, and Lehigh.
SchoolPsych-N Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Hi, I am applying for Ph.D program of school psychology to University of Florida, Fordham, UT Austin.
_kita Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Hi! I'm looking at School & Mental Health Counseling at Lehigh University, University of Penn, Scranton U. , Chestnut Hill C. , Marywood U., and maybe Arcadia U. In the East Coast Candycrava?
candycrava Posted October 14, 2012 Author Posted October 14, 2012 Yes, I'm currently in Delaware looking to go to a school within a relatively short distance. Are you on the east coast as well?
_kita Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Yup. I live a hop, skip & a jump away along the eastern section of PA.
miamia Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I am considering to apply University of Houston but not sure. Because there are only 3 core faculty members and 2 of them are assistant prof's. Normally I wouldn't care their degrees, but some of my friends told that it is not a good idea to work with an assistant prof. Could you guys give any advice on this?
_kita Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Well, what are your concerns with the assistant profs? The only concern I've heard is that assistant professors might move and leave you in a pickle where your research is concerned. But otherwise I don't see where that would be a factor.
Quant_Liz_Lemon Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 My concern would be that they're inexperienced in advising and could be more focused on their own research than guiding students.
_kita Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 It really will all depend on the professor. I know all sorts of professors who may lousy advisers both assistant and tenured. The assistant prof. will probably have the bonus of understanding the current market and obstacles a bit better than someone who graduated 20 years ago. They might also be more "sparkle in the eye" eager to assist (the new job glow). Most departments give you a list of the current graduate students in the department. Maybe send them an e-mail inquiring?
candycrava Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 So has anyone gotten interview invites yet? I received one so far, from Rider.
SchoolPsychGirl Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Congrats on your interview! I applied to Master's (in school psych) to : Columbia Fordham Pace Iona CUNY Brooklyn My GPA is about 3.7, Recc's are good- not SOLID but good, SOP was pretty good....GRE wasn't spectacular-and I'm worried :/ All of my deadlines were 1/15 except Brooklyn and Iona which are 2/1 & 2/15. Just waiting now I guess. I'm trying not to get too hopefull about Columbia.
....Loading Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Wow I didn't know it was a thread going already! I applied to University of Alabama and Georgia Southern University. Both Ed.S programs. My third school/option got pulled so I'm freaking out about only having 2 schools. =( About me: Gre eh OK, GPA above 3.0 but I feel it could be better, undergrad degree psychology (A's in 99% of my major courses/60 hrs!) and a lot of experience, mainly involving special education. Volunteered in a special needs classroom for about 5 years, worked in two research labs and did a lot research in one (socioeconomic autism trends in my state was my main focus) work as a teacher once a month in social group classes for children with autism, and I currently work in a severe/profound high school class =) Awesome LORs too I still feel like I am not competitive applicant. For a short period of time, during undergrad, I thought I was doing clinical psychology. It is so competitive so I assumed school psychology would be just like that. Then again, I know nothing.
SchoolPsychGirl Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I recieved an email from Teacher's College, Columbia University today inviting me for an interview on 2/25/13 So excited but SO nervous! I hope to hear back from my others soon, too!
EdNerd2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Congrats on the interview! (unsolicited advice) Prepare yourself by reading current research on education hot-topics...most of my EdS interviews asked about my personal philosophy/thoughts on RtI (figure out your feelings on this, if you haven't already, and be prepared to back them up), recent issues (think gun violence/mental health in schools, etc)... Feel free to PM me if you want more info/details...and CONGRATS!
nygirl2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Thanks for the info Ednerd! I'm applying to four, all in Western NY: Roberts Wesleyan, Alfred, SUNY Buffalo and Rochester Institute of Technology. All of my applications have been in for a month, and my final letters FINALLY arrived this past week, right before the deadline (which was 2/1)! I really hope I hear something soon!!!
nygirl2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Ignore my earlier post! Just got invited to interview at Alfred, which is my first choice at this point!
LeahLou Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Hey everyone. I'm applying for a M. Ed. in School Counseling at UNLV. Still waiting to hear back. SchoolPsychGirl Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Congrats on the interview! Thanks for the tips! For Columbia TC, my writing sample was atually on RTI and mental health in schools. Ignore my earlier post! School Psych programs at Columbia (TC), UConn, William and Mary, and James Madison University. I have an interview at UConn on Friday (2/8). Yay - that is super exciting!! Have you heard from TC yet?
jennyk31991 Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 (edited) Yay - that is super exciting!! Have you heard from TC yet? Thanks. The interview from UConn was postponed to the 22nd because of the snowstorm this weekend. No news from TC. I'm guessing that since you've gotten an invite already, I'm not :/ Edited February 7, 2013 by jennyk31991
nygirl2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 I now have a second interview scheduled, this one over Skype on next Wednesday!! Anyone participated in a Skype interview before? any tips?
allisonlpm Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 (edited) I recieved an email from Teacher's College, Columbia University today inviting me for an interview on 2/25/13 So excited but SO nervous! I hope to hear back from my others soon, too! I received an email interview invitation from TC too on 2/8, interview date is 3/11. But they do not conduct Skype interview, so I am still thinking whether I should fly to NYC from Hong Kong...... SchoolPsychGirl, do you know how many applicants does TC admit per year for the master program? Edited February 9, 2013 by allisonlpm
Ruh26 Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 (edited) Hey All! I'm so upset that I didn't find this thread earlier, it would have been an awesome support system. I've applied to a mix of Psy.D and Ph.d Programs, along with a specialist level program as backup. My GPA is about a solid 3.6 overall with a 3.9 in my psych major classes. I did decent on the GRE (V: 159, Q: 150, W: 5.5). And I know that my recommendations are seriously solid. I'm a senior at a small state university and haven't had much research experience. But I did have a great counseling internship last semester at a rural high school. I've been accepted to one of my top choice schools, but I'm still waiting to hear back from others before making my final decision. Edited March 3, 2013 by Ruh26
schpsych Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 HI I am just wondering if anyone applied to Penn State that is planning to attend or not attend?
