s24 Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 Hey guys, I just got my UofT MPH-epi acceptance. Does anyone know the number of students in the program? On the forum someone had said they were planning to increase the size--does anyone know the size for certain? Also, do you guys think a specialized (Epi) MPH from UofT is more appropriate or a more general MPH from Guelph? Thanks for the advice!
mpherrr Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 I got an email from the Global Health admin team first, and got another email from the Epi department the next day. Thanks. I also got the email from the global health team first, but I have not yet received any email from the epidemiology department. Should I be worried?
Cima Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 UVic, how long shall I wait on your decision? Am getting tired and angry.
mhmph Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 I feel like Guelph is a pretty accepting community with alot of activism. I wouldn't say that Guelph is the most multicultural university, as my partner attended Waterloo for his undergrad and I felt like he was the minority there. However, its not a strange thing to see different ethnic backgrounds especially in science courses. There are tons of different ethnic associations around, and they usually have days in the university centre to promote awareness. Yes, like any university there are people who are racist, but I do not feel like it is the norm. Guelph has a great sense of community as its a medium size university. I would say that Guelph has a 7:3 ratio of girls to boys though!! Students in Guelph are very caring as people are always sending random people notes if they are sick, random acts of kindness, and generally help people out. I am graduating from Biomedical Sciences, and usually its a cut throat program in other universities as people want to be doctors, dentists, etc etc. However, I never felt like anyone was going to screw me over, the profs were very friendly and so were my classmates. Guelph is very environmentally driven, and there are always campaigns to reduce water bottle waste, sustainability, and various other eco things. I would definitely take a tour of the campus sometime and check it out yourself. If you decide to accept there are various websites for housing (I was a Off Campus Living Peer Helper) such as www.thecannon.ca, www.uoguelph.ca/OCL or www.kijji.ca My email is mcumming@uoguelph.ca if you want to chat further. Hope I helped! Melissa HI guelphbiomed and everyone, So I've been trolling this message section for a while now and thought I would pipe in! There is so much great information on here, I just want to say thanks to everyone who has contributed, because it has been such a huge help during this whole admission process/waiting game. I have been accepted at U of G into the MPH program and am so, so, so excited, as this was my number one choice. (Was also accepted at U of W, but will be declining now that I've heard from Guelph). I live in Guelph and also did my undergrad degree at U of G. I have to say that Guelph is a very liberal, open-minded town, from all of my experiences here. (Of course, that's not to say there are not isolated instances of unacceptable behaviour, as could be said for anywhere) It is also a very beautiful city and I really love the campus (I am a bit biased here, of course...) As a bit of additional information, I called and spoke with a woman by the name of Sandra in the Financial Services department on Wednesday. It just so happened that Sandra had previously worked as the graduate secretary for the MPH program, and when I told her what program I was starting, she said she thought it was one of the best programs U of G offers, because the students in the program always just seemed so happy and like they really enjoyed it. Not sure if that helps, but I thought I would share. I really look forward to seeing some of you in September! Thanks so much Melissa! Especially glad to hear that there are a variety of ethnic associations. Feeling a little better about accepting the offer now I'll definitely be checking out the campus soon. Hopefully we will meet in September! Hey Everyone! I just joined this forum after seeing all these posts about the MPH program at Guelph. I also was accepted to the program, which was my first choice! I'm really excited to start in September and I can't wait to meet everyone! If anyone wants to get in touch send me a personal message, it would be great to get in contact with others in the program before September.

On the forum someone had said they were planning to increase the size--does anyone know the size for certain? Also, do you guys think a specialized (Epi) MPH from UofT is more appropriate or a more general MPH from Guelph? Thanks for the advice! I actually emailed and inquired about that. This was the response: "The class size for this September 2013 Epi program is aiming to be around 35- 40 students. They aimed for this number last year and we ended up with 30 incoming students." And I am also wondering the same as you re: U of T Epi vs. Queens general MPH. Though I am pretty positive its Toronto.
Becks1 Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 UVic, how long shall I wait on your decision? Am getting tired and angry. Oh man, they're taking a long time. Waiting is so nerve wracking! Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks for sharing the response. 35-40 seems larger than Guelph but it's not too large I guess. Why are you leaning towards UofT?
deletta Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 I think for an MPH, getting the Epi skill set is probably more valuable than having a general skill set. I also like Toronto the DLSPH reputation / opportunities it may bring. Both definitely have their strengths, so its been a challenge deciding. And yes, the class size also was a big factor. Queens is 25 vs. the 35ish at U of T. But at least its not 60 llke someone said. What are you thinking??
MPH Hopeful Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 Can anyone weigh in on what they think of the MPH programs at: Sask? SFU? Queens?
laur835 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 Hello all, Just got an interview for U of T health informatics - its tomorrow! Any advice?
Mph2013hopeful Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Has anyone heard from McMaster for HRM? I'm still waiting to hear back even though I applied to get accepted into the Spring term.

As well, UofT's reputation is definitely one of the best in Canada. I am just hesitant of the program being too focused on numbers. Also, I haven't heard many great things about professors at UofT and the envrionment seems very cut-throat--all this makes me hesitant!
walterserin Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Everyone who is still waiting on Queens, I heard from administration that those on the waitlist will know their status regardless if accepted or declined on May 2nd, only a few more days of waiting.
walterserin Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 For anyone heading to Alberta in the fall and looking for a room mate (whether apartment, house or residence) let me know. I will mostly likely be heading there although I have not officially accepted, still waiting on hearing back from schools closer to home since I am from Toronto. Good luck to everyone as the final offers are being sent out!
PubHealth Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Has anyone heard from McMaster for HRM? I am also still awaiting a response for Fall admission. Best of luck!
areyouannie Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 I'm So Frustrated!! AHHHHHHH I hate waiting which school are you waiting for?
torontoMPH Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Hey, I emailed Queens today and was told that my application is 'on hold' and the final decision depends on how many people accept the initial offers.... I'm not sure if that even means anything. Were you told something similar? And thankfully I've been accepted to Waterloo. yeah so I asked her to clarify what that meant and she said that i am on the waiting list and if some spots open up from the first round of offers than those on the waiting list will get in. Are you going to accept waterloo? I didn't get in there because i didnt have 3 years of experience after graduating from undergrad... did you? Goodluck
maturia Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 I agree that specialization may a good option. As well, UofT's reputation is definitely one of the best in Canada. I am just hesitant of the program being too focused on numbers. Also, I haven't heard many great things about professors at UofT and the envrionment seems very cut-throat--all this makes me hesitant! I've been struggling with the same dilemma between U of T Epi and Queen's general MPH (although I can't dither much longer as my offer for Queen's is due tomorrow!). Basically like deletta, I am also leaning towards U of T, even though I share the same concerns as you, s24. I too find that U of T's program is VERY numbers based, and there really isn't much "general" public health content. It's all epi, which is very intimidating for someone from a social sciences background like me. However, I've realized that while the program is very numbers-based the first year, the second year is rather wide open and you can basically take all the "softer" non-numbers-based courses you like, but you'll have (hopefully) acquired strong quantitative skills the first year. While I'm still nervous about it, I basically see it as 8 months that might be admittedly a little painful, but will give you a foundation of marketable, hard skills, and then in the second year you can explore your other interests in public health, which might not be so in demand in the workplace. Looking at the courses at Queen's, I wasn't sure it would give me the same rigorous foundation, even though I would feel a lot more comfortable and a lot less nervous going into it than I do for U of T. I don't know your background, but for me it's basically a matter of not going for something that's similar to what I've done in the past and is probably more "natural" for me, in favour of doing something that's harder but ultimately probably more useful for my future career. I hope anyways - I may say all this now and then be fleeing the program two weeks in, but that's my current thinking. Are you having the same kind of thoughts about it?
lol123 Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Has anyone waitlisted for waterloo MPH hear back from them? thanks in advance
areyouannie Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 has anyone received a etter in the mail from UT?
PubHealth Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Has anyone waitlisted for waterloo MPH hear back from them? thanks in advance Hi - I have been wait listed as well and still waiting to hear a response. Waterloo and Mac are still pending for me.
areyouannie Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Got an acceptance letter in the mail today from Dalla Lana dated April 24th

I couldn't have said it better myself maturia. I feel EXACTLY the same way as you (feel more comfortable among the softer sciences but feel the epi foundation is more valuable in the long run...) And I also have to let Queens know tomorrow... Whats your final decision??
