So I am just finishing up my SOP but then I realized something I maybe should address, I took a semester off to get treament for an eating disorder almost 3 years ago. Is this really necessary to address this? I am more of a private person and I would prefer to not. I am nearly finished so that is why a fast response would be nice.

Thanks

I would put one line in addressing it - but you don't have to be specific. Just say you had to take one semester off due to health issues, or to resolve a medical issue.

 I agree with this.

I disagree with this. If it's only a semester, I don't think it's a big issue. It is reflected in your transcript. Don't highlight it if you don't have to. If they ask you, obviously address it.

I took some time off from school that I really did not address in my Statement of Purpose. In the interviews that I have gotten it has not come up. They were more focused on the recent research that I have been doing. If you don't make a big deal out of it, it won't be a big deal (and in your case I don't think it's a big deal).

If they have a personal history statement, address it there. Otherwise, I wouldn't even mention it.

Actually, I agree more with you DarwinAG. But maybe it's just because I am biased or maybe it is just because I am nearly finished and I don't want to have to rewrite a paragraph to fit in "by the way". Thanks all.

I had to take time off for medical leave. I didn't address it in my SOP. I had a recommendor address it. He included ONE line addressing it. He didn't want to draw attention to it, but in case admin committees wanted an explanation, it was there.

One more vote for "don't address it". It's only a semester. I took a year off to travel and didn't say boo about it.
