Acceptance Freakout Thread

Curious: patientagony, why do you have Yale listed as an implicit rejection?

Oh, thanks for pointing that out! That was the automatic signature from when I applied the first time around and I forgot to change it since I haven't been active on here in quite some time. Thanks for pointing that out. I hope I didn't scare anyone into thinking that Yale was already replying. I've fixed it now.

That's great that you were already able to pull admits this time around.

Honestly, I'm really surprised. It was crushing to be rejected from every school the first time around. I didn't apply last year because I was still feeling the rejection, so I waited two years between application cycles.

I think the reasons this time is going better is that the first time I did it senior year of college, which was just too much stress. I wasn't ready, I didn't have enough time and I had this idea that unless I got into one of the top ranked schools I was never going to get a job, so I might as well just apply to the insane places no one gets into. This strategy did NOT work and I don't suggest it.

This time I've toned down my expectations, spent more time on the personal statement and just tried to generally chill the fuck out over the whole process.

I was also a member of the Vandy "bloodbath" yesterday and while your first comment is meant to be encouraging, I still worry; I applied to Vandy, Duke, UNC, Columbia, WUSTL, Penn, and Brown! I really wish I diversified my portfolio a bit.

Don't take anything I say seriously. I said they red my application.

Your schools are all very tough, but that doesn't mean you won't get in. I think you've got a good chance, from what I know. But it does mean that if you DON'T get in, it's not necessarily a reflection of your abilities.

Also: Congrats, patientagony!

patientagony, do you know if all of the acceptances have gone out for Urbana-Champaign? I only saw one on the results board, which I'm assuming is yours. Also, congrats on two great acceptances already!

Thanks! I don't think all of the acceptances have gone out. I think they notified me early because of a fellowship nomination. All hope is not lost for you!

Does anyone have any solid information on Iowa? Their application deadline was less than a month ago and there are already acceptances on the results page. They usually don't notify until March, so I'm curious as to why there are already a couple of admits.

I just wanted to redraw attention to my query since it didn't show up until several hours after I posted it!

I don't know anything about Iowa's status, but schools can surprise us with a new schedule at any moment... or they might send out a few early notifications. A month is plenty of time for the committee to meet and make decisions.

Yeah I get that the schedules can change at any time, I'm just asking because when I called (about three weeks ago) to verify my recommendations and transcripts, they said it would still be a couple of weeks before the application components were matched together. I've never heard of an ad comm making offers in 2-4 weeks, but I guess there's a first time for everything.

I literally got my current acceptance minutes after applications closed... Especially fellowship nominations and top candidates can be notified very, very quickly. I wouldn't give up yet, though, as I think there will be a lot more news coming from Iowa yet.

I didn't apply to Iowa, and I don't have any info on that program specifically, but I received a fellowship nomination from one program where I applied two weeks after the application deadline. It's possible that those acceptances are applicants who were nominated for fellowships (whether they were informed of that detail or not).

ETA: My bad, asleepawake just basically made the same point.

I originally assumed the acceptances were fellowships as well, but a couple of them posted that funding information was still forthcoming. I guess the result could've been creative writing or comp/rhet-- maybe someone here will know!

You applied two weeks after the deadline and they still took your application? What sort of magic trick do you have up your sleeve?

I think she/he means she received a nomination two weeks after the application deadline. Not that she applied two weeks after the application deadline.

The Penn State acceptance on the board is freaking me out. I haven't heard anything from them. Le sigh.

That one is freaking me out, too. On the other hand, a friend I graduated with got into PSU's PhD program when I started my MA, and I just spoke with him a week ago. He tells me that the (very unofficial) word around the department was that they would likely be making their offers in the 2nd or 3rd week of February, so this still seems extremely early.

That's what I meant. Thanks for clearing that up.

In the past, Penn State has made some initial offers as early as the end of January. I can speak from personal experience. They roll out their acceptances over a long while, and they historically have admitted relatively large cohorts, so there's nothing to worry over at this point in the game. They will almost certainly make many more offers in the coming weeks.
