Hi everyone, I applied to Ohio State's English PhD program, which is one of my top choices. I see that many applicants were notified of acceptances and rejections through the website starting this past week and continuing on through today. When I called to ensure my application was being processed (because of a problem I saw on my status page), they said my application was indeed being processed and that the process would be completed within the next two weeks. Does anyone out there have any idea of what it might mean that I haven't gotten an acceptance or rejection yet? (I have a good acceptance with full funding from another program of equal standing already and an interview from another good program as well.)

There are a few of us who still have "in review." Who knows what that means? We could still be in the running...

Where have you been accepted to already? Congrats!

I don't know about OSU specifically, but many programs trickle acceptances and rejections out over a period of several weeks. Generally it's because they notify the applicants at the very top and very bottom of their lists at once (for example, notifying their best candidates of fellowship nominations, etc., and cutting those they are certain they won't accept), and work their way to the middle. Sometimes it's because they need to be more cautious with their funding, and so only accept a couple of people at a time and wait for them to decline before making the next round of offers (this way, they don't end up with more matriculating students than they can fund). It's very common for programs not to notify all at once and is nothing to be alarmed about, especially this early in the season.

Also, this may not be the best place to note this, but you all don't need to be so worried about your status pages on online applications. Many programs don't use them or even update them (again, not sure about OSU), and it doesn't necessarily mean that something is wrong with your application if they indicate it's incomplete or forever in review. The obsessive checking and re-checking of status pages (especially those that will never change): that way madness lies.

Did you check your status on the website? None of us received e-mail notifications that I know of. You have to log in and click for more if it says "decision." If it just says "in review," your status is still up in the air. Good luck!

Thank you! I've been accepted to WashU with an extra fellowship nomination on top of the full funding, and I was invited to the interview at Emory. Out of 18 schools, those are the only two I've heard from thus far, which isn't surprising since I never would have expected to hear from any school so early. But there are bound to be a number of rejections in my near future.

While I'd like to believe otherwise, it's always possible that not having been notified yet only means that they haven't finished evaluating our files.

Yes, madness lies in that direction.

Yeah, it's painful waiting for OSU.  Just saw another rejection went up on the results board.  I'm still "In Review."  I'm thinking everyone is going to find out the results soon -- maybe even today.

Yeah, hopefully the fact that the results board had one rejection from today doesn't mean that all of them going out today will be rejections. When I called about a week ago, they said they hoped to finish the process up in the next "two" weeks. It would be a pain to have to wait all next week as well.

Yikes, it looks like my status may be in the process of being updated. I'm having trouble accessing my status page.

Yikes indeed.  Well!?

Well, it turns out that I'm ridiculous. Nothing changed. Who knows, it was probably doing strange things because I had been checking the status too much.

Bah!  Well, no news is better than a reject!

This is definitely true. We will see in time, I suppose. I'm not counting on it.

I'm STILL "in review" as well. I Would be ecstatic if OSU accepted me...

I'm also still in review today. So, I emailed, and they said that admissions decisions would be finalized by the end of this week. They said to please hang in there.

Got this in an email about funding this morning:

"This year, we anticipate accepting an incoming cohort of 18 new Master’s and Ph.D. students (9 students entering with BA degrees and 9 students entering with MA degrees)."

The phrase "anticipate accepting" indicates that they aren't finished, right? Keeping my fingers crossed for everyone else waiting to hear back.

Thanks up the update and the optimism!

Interesting.  Did you ask for information, or did this info just show up?  If it just showed up, I think that's a good sign for you!

It was mentioned in a rather long email I received regarding my fellowship nomination for the program. I didn't request the email, however, I think it's probably something sent to the majority of new admits (although it's somewhat personalized).

Ah, I didn't see you were already accepted.  Congrats!  It's a great program.

Thanks :)
