musicmage09 Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 A school today emailed me today saying they are reviewing my application and wanted more specific information about my minority background. Anyone else had an email like this? Do you think this means that they are seriously considering my application? Or am I just way too hopeful!? : )
OhMySocks Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Its hard to say. It can mean that they are interested, or it could just be SOP for them.
slaNYC Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 I agree that it is hard to say what it means. However, if I had to guess I would say they are looking for funding opportunities for you. I really don't want to get your hopes up but I got similar inquiry last year from Berkeley about my residency status. I hadn't been admitted and wondered why they cared so much if I was a resident, not a resident, and/or would qualify for a waiver. Im quite sure though they were trying to figure my funding package as I was admitted shortly after that exchange.
spacezeppelin Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 I think its might be for funding as well. I few of the schools I applied to asked for "diversty statements". I asked what specifically they were used for and they said it was just for funding purposes. I dont want to get your hopes up either, but I think that might be a good sign. Asking that kind of question to applicants they weren't interested in seems to be begging for legal issues. It also seems like a big hassle, so heres hoping! Obviously thats all just hopeful speculation. Fingers crossed. Mecasickle 1

musicmage09 Posted January 31, 2013 Author Posted January 31, 2013 Thanks you guys! I know that its too early to call it but at least they are taking a second look (hopefully! fingers crossed)
PhDreams Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Was it Harvard? Theyve been asking about minority status lately and I cant figure out why...lol
selecttext Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 If you checked a box claiming to be a minority, it is not surprising that they would follow up.
OhMySocks Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Was it Harvard? Theyve been asking about minority status lately and I cant figure out why...lol There are fellowships and such that you might qualify for if you are of certain minority statuses. On a completely unrelated note, why is the plural of status, statuses. Shouldn't it be Stati or something?
musicmage09 Posted January 31, 2013 Author Posted January 31, 2013 I was very specific about my minority status in my application. They emailed me to ask the percentage make up of my ethnicity.
TakeruK Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 I also second the thought that they might be asking to consider whether or not they can submit your application to some (internal) fellowship. I can't really think of many other reasons where the specific % makeup of your ethnicity matters. I say this because fellowships are often funded by individuals or agencies which usually can stipulate things like "this fellowship is for someone with at least 25% of X ethnicity" etc. I don't think departments usually worry about that level of precision if they are looking to have a diverse cohort!
