crazystat Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Their program was pretty good, that is true. But their recent placement is really not pretty good. Still cannot believe that. It seems that there are so many applicants in this year.
echlori Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I know...I got rejected from U of Washington Stats. My gf is already in U of Washington and I got rejected from both Biostats AND stats... Starting to even think that I might not get any successful applications out of 12 this year...
PittPanther13 Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 It does sting a lot for the first few days, but you'll get through it. The amount of applicants this year is ridiculously high, and almost all of the applicants would do extremely well. You'll get in somewhere, and then just make the best of it and try to do so well that you feel that they should regret not accepting you. I, for one, have taped my 2 rejection letters to the back of my door and set to the background on my phone as kind of a motivational poster (I found a typo in my Washington rejection letter, which made me feel a bit better after I wrote "idiots" next to it). Just get that first acceptance letter and you'll forget about the rejections. Good luck! VBD 1
Shostakovich Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I think Wisconsin publishes admission data somewhere on their site, if I recall correctly their admission rate is on the lower side (maybe something like 10% ish). Where did you find out that their recent placement rate has been low? Nothing from Wisconsin for me yet btw...
creed_the_third Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I wonder if there is any reason why this year is significantly more competitive, I mean the job market isn't worse than 2009-2012...
applyin&prayin Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I haven't heard back from Wisconsin, which seems like a trend with my apps. complete radio silence. I think CMU's now done with all their acceptances and waitlists now looking at the result page. I just wish they send that official reject letter so I can stop hoping. Really liked CMU's applied program but i guess it's not to be. very tough year indeed.
echlori Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I know it's really irrational, but my mind is thinking about what if I don't get in anywhere...and it's already difficult enough thinking that I'm going to be separated from the gf for another 3-5 years at least.
roguexgirl Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Got my first definite rejection from UW. I'm dealing with it much better than I thought. it's kind of a relief actually :-). Good luck to all!
eternalmorning Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Looking at GC posts, I think there are unreasonably many international students who applied to Wisconsin. wow.
crazystat Posted February 2, 2013 Author Posted February 2, 2013 Where did you find out that their recent placement rate has been low? Nothing from Wisconsin for me yet btw... From their website, they have some recent PhD graduates information. Their placement rate is not low. But most of their graduates go to industry instead of academic field. And from my current school's professor, I got to know their program is kind of strange those years. They do have lots of excellent professors, but their PhD just don't wanna go to academic field or so. I mean industry is not bad, but just not what I am looking for.
Eracer Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Application rates must have just exploded this year! Probably will trickle down to masters admissions as well. Looks like the big secret is out.
blobblobblob Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I haven't received any news yet. I'm hoping this is good news since from previous posts on grad cafe, rejections go out before acceptances.
crazystat Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 Here is something to take to heart, It might be corny but its very true, most of you already know what it take to succeed but its a good reminder. Dose not matter if your in academia, millitary or sports Yep, that is true. Just the aim is different. I have a Master's degree. So no need for me to go to phd if I really want to go to industry. Master degree is kinda enough semperfi101 1

I just wish they send that official reject letter so I can stop hoping. Really liked CMU's applied program but i guess it's not to be. I feel entirely the same way. I haven't heard a peep from Carnegie Mellon, and it clearly looks like they're done delivering any positive news. I'd like to just know once and for all so that I can move on.

Master degree is kinda enough It depends, if you're going into something research-based, chances are you'll hit a ceiling sooner or later (sooner for me) without a PhD.
blobblobblob Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 A bunch of acceptances are now on gradcafe, but I still haven't gotten any news? Anyone else have no news?
